Sam Rockwell in “Moon”

We may have gotten a little trailer-crazy over here at Onelargeprawn, and like me and smoking, it shows no signs of stopping ;-)

While the rest of the world may have seen and loved it, South Africa has yet to see release of Moon. In the feature debut by director Duncan Jones, Moon tells the story of astronaut and Lunar Industries employee Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) who has been stationed on the moon for the last three years. In that time, Sam has been isolated, his only interaction has been with a computer named GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey). Thankfully Sam’s contract has come to an end and soon he’ll be back on earth with his wife and infant daughter.

With two weeks left to serve, Sam starts to hallucinate and gets injured in an accident. After recovering in the station’s infirmary, Sam makes an unauthorized visit to the scene of the accident, whereupon he makes an unexpected discovery

It reminds me of another movie, you know the one with the thing and the guy, and the monolith? In any case, Moon was released in June and is rated 90% at Rotten Tomatoes. It is expected to hit South African shores in late October this year.

BONUS: Did you know that Duncan Jones was born Zowie Bowie, son of the legendary David Bowie?

James Cameron’s “Avatar” Trailer

Apparently everyone is talking about Avatar. I obviously missed that memo. I really should fire my non-existent yet big bosomed secretary.

Written and directed by James Cameron (Terminator 2, Aliens, Titanic) Avatar has nothing in common with the animated series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” – Cameron wrote the script a decade for the Nickelodeon show, and hence retained the right to use the word as his film’s title. After spending almost two full years in post-production, Avatar is supposedly one of the most technically sophisticated movies yet seen.

It sees a paraplegic war veteran (Sam Worthington) who gets shipped out to the planet of Pandora where the meddlesome humans at odds with the planet’s inhabitants, the long-limbed, elven-eared Na’vi race. See the epic trailer below or watch the special effects bonanza in HD at Apple Trailers.

Maybe it’s because I’m not drunk yet, but I feel a little underwhelmed. What do you think of it?

OMG! What An Awesome Uncharted 2 Trailer

If you ever speak to a PS3 gamer and ask them about the fondest memory they’ve had, more often than not, they’ll tell you about their experience playing Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Developed by Naughty Dog and released exclusively on Playstation 3 in 2007, Uncharted featured stunning visuals, witty dialogue, a great musical score – the kind of high production values one would find in summer blockbuster films. Named PS3 Game of the Year (2007) by IGN, Uncharted has sold over 2.6 million copies worldwide.

And very soon, fortune hunter Nathan Drake will return in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, being pulled back into the treacherous world of mercenary treasure hunters that he had sought to leave behind. Giving nothing of the story away, the latest trailer for Uncharted 2 shows what you can expect from this epic action-adventure title. Have a look, it’s awesome.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves drops October 13th in the U.S. and October 23rd in Europe. You don’t want to miss this – sell your kidney (or preferably someone else’s) if you have. ;-)

LEAP: Travelling Between Worlds

LEAP is a short film by Dan Gaud about a man who can travel between two parallel worlds, and the consequences of his actions. Gaud did pretty much everything on the project – writing, storyboarding, shooting, editing, color correction, and all the visual effects. The only thing he wasn’t responsible for was the sound and music.

He shot the film in two days with a RED One camera, which incidentally was the same type of camera used to film Neil Blomkamp’s film District 9. It took Gaud a year to do all the visual effects, and he has just released a mysterious, compelling teaser. See it below or watch it in high quality at YouTube.

The full 6-minute short should be available next month. Gaud is planning to take his creation to film festivals, hoping for investors to turn it into a full-length feature film.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

From Terry Gilliam, the acclaimed director of the cult movies Brazil, 12 Monkeys, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, comes his latest film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Having made a deal with the devil, the 1,000-year-old Doctor Parnassus has gained the ability to take people beyond their imaginations. One day, the devil comes to collect on their arrangement, and the good doctor and his theatre troupe must travel through mystical parallel worlds to get back what is most dear to him.

This was final film role for the late Heath Ledger, who died a third of the way during filming. As a result his role was recast to use Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell to portray “physically transformed versions” of Ledger’s character. See the fantastical HD trailer below.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is set for a UK release on October 16th, 2009.

District 9: For Humans Only

I was speaking to a bunch of friends last night and none of them had heard of District 9. That was not the answer I was looking for, considering I didn’t know what the frack it was either. Until now.

Produced by Peter Jackson, District 9 is the directorial debut of Jackson’s protege and South African born Neill Blomkamp. In this mysterious sci-fi flick, it seems that Johannesburg, South Africa has become a haven for refugees, both human and extraterrestrial.

Shot in a faux-documentary style, District 9 is slated for release August 14th, 2009. Check out the uncensored trailer below or watch it in HD at Apple.com.

From the teaser, I assume that the big-ass alien ship has run out of petrol and can’t leave the earth, so it begs the question – why would the visitors from outer space be forced to live in a shantytown when they could stay aboard their ship? There must be more to this and I’m very interested to find out.

The official website d-9.com with its media-rich interface allows you to either enter the human side or non-human side and provides a lot of information, most of which I don’t understand or know what to do with. I chose the non-human side and entered an obviously false alien ID. Alarm bells started ringing, things were scanned, I was told my connection was being monitored, and got redirected to some company called Multi-National United. The plot thickens…

A Basterd’s Work is Never Done

It’s a tough job but some basterd has to get it done. From the acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino comes Inglourious Basterds, a war film/spaghetti western that sees Brad Pit as a Nazi-hating badass who seeking mighty vengeance against his foes, one skull-cracking hit at a time.

Here’s the trailer. The movie is due for release in the US in August 2009.

Revenge of the babysat

Somebody smart once said never work with children or animals. This proved to be advice young Nathan Beavers of Jackson, Ohio really should have taken to heart.

Nathan was babysitting a bunch of kids in a trailer in Jackson when he clumsily trod on a four-year-old boy’s foot. This innocent bumbling act so enraged the injured toddler that he proceeded to grab a shotgun and blast it in Nathan’s general direction. Luckily for Nathan his wounds are reportedly pretty minor. The toddler has not been charged.

Nice. Trailer + Toddler + Shotgun = Only in America.
