Sucker Punch is the first movie Zack Synder has worked on that is not based on existing material. Set in 1950s, Synder’s steampunk sci-fi flick follows the story of Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who has been imprisoned in a mental institution by her villainous stepfather. With a lobotomy scheduled in five days, Baby Doll imagines an alternative reality where she needs to steal five objects to escape captivity.
Fresh from Comic-Con comes a set of delectable posters for Sucker Punch complete with school girl outfits, bust-enhancing corsets, fishnets, guns, and mecha. We’re sold already. Check out the sexy posters after the jump.
The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Inception merely told us it was a sci-fi mystery set within the architecture of the mind (see it here). It was painfully vague yet so very tantalizing. The newest trailer dropped this past weekend and gives a better look into the life of Dom Cobb, a corporate spy who nicks secrets from deep within the subconscious of his victims. The thief has lost things dear to him but has a chance at redemption with one last, almost impossible job.

Inception is written and directed by Christopher Nolan and has a first-rate cast including Leonardo Dicaprio, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Ellen Page. The accompanying poster looks good as well, with a M.C. Escher look about it.
Inception is due out in the U.S. on July 16th, and will air in South Africa at the end of July. It will not be in 3D. It’s certainly the movie I’m most looking forward to this year. What’s yours?
UPDATE (May 26th): Here’s a preview of the international trailer that was aired on a Japanese television station during an interview with Ken Watanabe. The new footage starts at the 39-second mark.
A long time ago (May 21st, 1980), George Lucas’ space opera Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was unleashed onto the cinema-going world and became the highest grossing film of that year. Seen by many fans as the most compelling episode in the Star Wars saga, Lucasfilm intend on celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back by holding a one-night-only digital screening of the film, followed by an on-stage Q&A with Harrison Ford.
Speaking of Harrison Ford, did you know that he narrated the original trailer to the film using his best 1930s-style radio voice? Seriously. Check it out.

According to Star Wars.com article, the trailer contains a few scenes that didn’t make it into the final cut.
…the trailer contains a few noteworthy gems, such as the famously cut “Threepio ripping the sign off the door” shot. Originally, the invading Imperials were to enter the door, sans warning sign, to be subsequently attacked by a pack of angry wampas. The sequence was ultimately cut from the film, but not before this small hint of its existence was forever immortalized by the trailer.
Also noteworthy is the lack of any mention of Yoda (his appearance was still top secret) as well as the stylized Empire logo we’re all familiar with. Since the logo had not yet been finalized, an early, somewhat clumsy-looking title closes the trailer, promising Empire’s much-anticipated release “next summer.”
Incidentally, did you know that an original “one sheet” film poster such as this could cost as much as USD 495.00? Holy sith!
As we in the southern hemisphere approach the dark depths of winter, our brothers and sisters in the north are going to be experiencing glorious sunny weather. Bastards. And to throw salt into the wounds, they’ve even made a trailer to how super-awesome their summer is going to be, film-wise at least.
The film-savvy peeps at Screenrant took 24 popular upcoming films and mashed them together to create the Ultimate 2010 Summer Movie Trailer. Check it out below.

I like Gears of War. I can empathize with characters as I too know a thing (or two) about loss. In late 2007, my first Xbox 360 succumbed to the dreaded RROD plague within a mere three days of receiving it. The replacement lasted a little longer, but in the dark days of April ’08, that too was mortally wounded. My second replacement has been working great since then, for the very few times I switch it on. It’s in hibernation you see, patiently waiting for epic exclusives. ;-)
Epic Games’ Cliff Blezinski officially unveiled the finale part of the Gears of War trilogy yesterday on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon TV show. It was accompanied with the first teaser trailer to the game, a haunting little clip entitled “Ashes to Ashes”. Marcus, Cole, Dom, and what looks like a lady COG are having another day from hell. It’s a desperate situation all-round. Check it out below.
Gear of War 3 will be released on April 8th, 2011 in Europe and the rest of the world.
BONUS: The song used in the debut trailer is called “Heron Blue”. Listen to the full version here.
UPDATE: The lady-looking COG is indeed a lady and not a feminine man who escaped from the Final Fantasy universe. Her name is Anya according to Blezinski’s status update on Twitter. There you have it folks, consider this as an end to the Gears of War sausage-fest.
Lazygamer editor Nick Mugabanakis (last name not real) tweeted at me late in the afternoon with this:
@onelargeprawn dude check out that trailer i jsut posted, you must put it up on your site. Its just too good
Judging by Nick’s terrible grammar and spelling, I gathered he was a little excited about something so I went fishing to find out what it was. From the loathsome depths of the film hell comes a movie so foul yet so hypnotically titillating. The low-budget made-for-TV flick is called Mega Piranha and stars one of my favourite singer-turned-actresses – 39-year-old Tiffany, famous for the track, “I Think We’re Alone Now” (refresh your memory here).
The only drawcard really is the fish, a strain of Megapiranha that have escaped their home in South America and travel to Florida to eat some tourists, a submarine, two battleships, and a helicopter. Perhaps they are missing some iron in their diet, but but let’s not dig into their reasoning or the wafer-thin plot. Switch your brain off and enjoy this delightfully bad trailer.
If you’re a fan of bad movies, then this must surely top your 2010 list. If it doesn’t, drop us a comment with the one that does.
From the melodramatic tagline to Kevin Costner’s under-acting I don’t have any fond memories of watching Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. At school we despised Bryan Adams for the part he played in music class – our teacher forced us to sing the movie’s ending theme “Everything I do, I do it for you” when she knew very well that we’d rather be watching the hotties horse about in River Dance. In any case, a new Robin Hood movie is on the horizon and from the looks of the trailer, is set to be a more grittier take on the story of the legendary archer and swordsman. Check it out below.
Directed by Ridley Scott (Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator), the film sees Russell Crowe ditching the traditional tights in favour of a more menacing look – he’s armoured, very medieval, and quite angry about the injustices going on around these fair lands. Cate Blanchett stars as Lady Marian, and Mark Strong will play the King’s dastardly henchman, Sir Godfrey. Robin Hood is set to release worldwide on May 14th, 2010.
Our man Macross is on holiday somewhere in the United States and is a big fan of Disney’s 1982 attempt at the sci-fi computer animation. I don’t want to put words in his mouth, but I’m think he would have jizzed in his pants upon seeing the official teaser trailer for Tron Legacy. It looks awesome to say the very least – check it out below.
Tron Legacy is a sequel to the 1982 film Tron, with Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner reprising their roles. Here’s the synopsis:
Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidante (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.
It’ll be the first feature film from director Joseph Kosinski and electro-pop duo Daft Punk will do the score. Tron Legacy will be shown in 3D starting on December 17th, 2010 in U.S. theatres. Word has it that it’ll reach South African shores on December 31st.
UPDATE (July 26th, 2010): Here’s the latest theatrical trailer:
If there was ever one TV series I wish would be brought back, it has to be Rome. For the two short seasons it was on for, Rome was a masterpiece to watch with the most elaborate sets and costumes, bloody violence, bared breasts, and deceit around every corner. Unfortunately, extremely high production costs doomed a fantastic series that had so much history to tell.
I had flashbacks to that beloved series when I saw the trailer to the upcoming tales about a Roman gladiator who becomes the leader of a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Here’s the synopsis to Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
Betrayed by his country. Beaten into slavery. Reborn as a warrior. Spartacus: Blood and Sand is a graphic and visceral account of Rome’s most famous gladiator. When he’s separated from the love of his life, Spartacus is forced into the gruesome and bloodthirsty arena, where a grisly death is primetime entertainment. Spartacus must fight for survival, befriend his enemies and play politics in this new world of corruption, violence, sex and fame. He’ll be seduced by power and tormented by vengeance. But his passion will give him the strength to prevail over every obstacle, in this modern and uninhibited tale of death, honor and endurance.
Have a look at the rollicking trailer below and let us know what you think.
Spartacus is played by Australian actor, Andy Whitfield. Lucy Lawless (Battlestar Galactica) plays Lucretia, who along with her husband Batiatus (played by John Hannah), own the slave. Spartacus: Blood and Sand is set to premiere January 22nd, 2010 in the United States, and a second season has already been confirmed. No word if/when it will get to South Africa.
Fans of godawful Asian cinema may like this. Andy Lau is Hong Kong’s most commercially successful film actor, having appeared in over a 100 films. I watched just four of them – Infernal Affairs I, II, and III (these were remade by Martin Scorsese as The Departed), and The House of Flying Daggers.
And in Future X-Cops, Lau plays a cop from 2085 who travels back in time to thwart a corporation’s plan to eliminate a scientist who has created a new technology to break up the monopoly on energy resources. Seems like a humdrum plot doesn’t it? What could possibly improve it – perhaps an enemy who arm is made entirely of robotic snakes? Or maybe a baddie that has bullet-proof bat wings? Oh yes, and what about some super-cop cyborg armour? Dude, totally.
I don’t understand a word of Chinese, but I do speak the language of awesome, and the Future X-Cops trailer has left me speechless. It’s absurd, I love it!

The $20 million movie is directed by Jing Wong and will apparently release on February 25th. I doubt this will make it to South African cinemas though.
