We Review: Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

Remakes and remasters seem to be a theme for many video game titles this year, and our latest review title is no different. Well, okay, it’s a little different. Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is a new old game for the Nintendo 3DS family, and the developers have completely rebuilt the game from the knees up (because the game’s original story, setting, and characters are still very much in place). The original, which debuted on the PlayStation 1, was incredibly well received, so how do you improve on a game that’s already a classic? Come along, I’ll tell you.

We Review: Bravely Second: End Layer

Bravely Default made its appearance back in 2013 (reviewed by us here), showing the world a new way to play JRPGs with its “Brave” and “Default” mechanisms. The sequel to the game, titled Bravely Second: End Layer is now upon us, and the game continues the story of Agnés Oblige, the Vestal of Wind who was promoted to Pope at the end of the first game. What else is new in the land of Luxendarc? Come, let’s find out, but mind you don’t step on the goblin.

We Review: Thief

Back in 1998, Eidos released Thief: The Dark Project as a massive “up your ziggy with a wahwah brush” to the entire first person shooter genre. As you probably already know (but which, for the sake of narrative flow in a review, I’m going to tell you again), the game eschewed the “3 guns a-blazing, 2 foes a-dying, and a partridge in a pear tree” style of FPS that was made popular by Doom, Hexen, Quake, and Unreal. Instead, it opted for a “tread softly and carry a big bag for loot” approach. First person stealth! How novel! And of course, the game was an instant success. So now in 2014, we have the highly-anticipated reboot of the game, simply titled “Thief”. Let’s open the bag of loot and see what we’ve absconded with.

Final Fantasy XIII 16-bit RETRO-spective

The next installment of Final Fantasy XIII hits us later this month. It’s been a while coming, and it’s always good to catch up story-wise either by replaying the prior games in the series (or playing for the first time, if you’ve not done that yet!), or if you’re lazy, re-reading old reviews. Square Enix has provided a more entertaining way of catching up with the story, though: a 16-bit SNES-style RETRO-spective. Watch it below.

We Review: Bravely Default

All fans of JRPGs, stick up your hands. Odds are, you lot were also fans of Final Fantasy at some point or another. Odds are, the same lot of you are a bit disillusioned with how weird the latest batch of Final Fantasy games are, yet also how samey other JRPGs are. You’ll be glad to know that a JRPG has come along to shake up all the old tropes, and yet keep things fun in the way the older Final Fantasy games did. Enter Bravely Default.

We Review: Final Fantasy XIII-2

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the latest game in the long-running RPG series, and the direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII. Anyone who played the original FFXIII will know that it suffered its share of troubles due to horrendously linear gameplay, over-reliance on written codices to fuel understanding, and a distinct lack of just about everything that fans felt embodied what a Final Fantasy game was supposed to be. Square Enix, its developers, came up with Final Fantasy XIII-2 in part as a way of listening to its fan base and releasing the game the fans wanted. Did they do right this time? Let’s find out.
