A Touching Piece About A Man & His Dying Dog

Jason Wood is an ex-con and through all the good and the bad, his best friend has been by his side. Last minutes with ODEN is a touching story about Jason’s final farewell to that best friend – a three-legged dog named Oden.

Oden’s journey is about to come to an end, and this emotionally-charged six minute documentary directed by Eliot Rausch, follows Jason’s last minutes with Oden before the dog is euthanised. It’s teary stuff man.

Jason, I may not know you, but I know what you must have felt, as would a lot of pet owners out there. I went through the very same heart-breaking, tear-filled moments when we had to put down FurryLuce’s most beloved cat, Dorian Gray.

He suffered from Acute Renal Failure, and we tried all manner of meds to prolong his life, but it was a vain attempt at avoiding the inevitable. I’m sure Dorian knew he was going to die and instead of making a fuss, he found a quiet place in the house to sleep, waiting for the darkness. I think we tend to suffer more when our pets are sick…

OFFLINE: A Gritty Sci-Fi Short by Matthew Santoro

It’s not been the best week. Aside from my PS3 refusing to read discs, I also had to replace two tyres on the car. We’ve also had, and to some extent are still experiencing DNS issues with the blog – some of our visitors are being greeted with the dreaded “Account Suspended” page, and if you visit via RSS, it seems our feed is broken as well. Please accept our apologies, but ultimately it’s out of our hands. Our ISP seems to have updated its DNS (finally!) but you may have to wait til yours gets its act together.

And now after that terrible intro, have a look at this trailer for a short film by Matthew Santoro, a senior visual effects artist whose work can be seen in big budget flicks such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 300, and The Incredible Hulk.

With virtually no budget, Santoro’s short film, O F F L I N E, is basically a one-man production and took almost two years to make. Santoro directed, edit, animated, and composed the film; he even built the costumes and props, and his actors doubled as crew. The trailer is 3 minutes of sheer sci-fi awesomeness. Check it out.

Santoro is currently in talks to create a feature length film based in the same world.

Hemlock

We’re on a bit of an arty vibe today and in his short film, Hemlock, self-taught animator Tyson Ibele from New Zealand tells the story of an ancient myth using a Steampunk aesthetic. This what Ibele has to say about how the story and title came about.

The story came from an idea I had a few years ago about a twist on the “King Midas” myth, where instead of a king touching something and turning it into gold, he touches it and it turns into clockwork. Then, I adapted that idea into the “Fountain of Youth” story, because I felt I could work a better over-arching narrative into it.

The film is named after a plant called hemlock that was used in poisons throughout history. It’s a fairly innocuous-looking member of the parsley family, in plant terms, but it is quite deadly. So, it’s a reference to the way the water from the well in the film seems desirable….but drinking it has terrible consequences.

Terrible consequences indeed. It’s a creepy tale and animated well. See it below or watch it in HD at Vimeo.

Red Rabbit

Red Rabbit is a brilliantly animated 8-minute short film by 3D artist Egmont Mayer and tells the tale of a man who lived all alone in his small apartment, until one day a rabbit suddenly appeared. Not knowing whether pets were allowed in the building, the man doesn’t let anyone into his apartment, and over the years the rabbit has grown quite large – like a habit one would say ;-)

I don’t think I need to tell you about the symbolism here.

It’s wonderfully animated, check it out.

Tango by Zbigniew Rybczynski

Tango is a short film by Zbigniew Rybczynski. There is a static shot of a single room and over the 8-minute span of the film, 36 different characters enter the room at different times and perform a specific action. Each character never acknowledges the presence of the other characters.

Tango won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 1983. Rybczynski talks about the project on his website:

Thirty-six characters from different stages of life – representations of different times – interact in one room, moving in loops, observed by a static camera. I had to draw and paint about 16.000 cell-mattes, and make several hundred thousand exposures on an optical printer. It took a full seven months, sixteen hours per day, to make the piece. The miracle is that the negative got through the process with only minor damage, and I made less than one hundred mathematical mistakes out of several hundred thousand possibilities. In the final result, there are plenty of flaws ® black lines are visible around humans, jitters caused by the instability of film material resulting from film perforation and elasticity of celluloid, changes of colour caused by the fluctuation in colour temperature of the projector bulb and, inevitably, dirt, grain and scratches.
