The Stars

Another day, another time-lapse video. Not that we’re complaining of course. Vimeo user AJRCLIPS collects and edits the open source data from NASA’s Image Science & Analysis Laboratory to show the stars as viewed from different cameras placed aboard the International Space Station. As expected, the views are splendiferous.

Earth From Space, a Time-Lapse Compilation

Using NASA’s Image Science & Analysis Laboratory as a resource, Vimeo user Michael König compiled footage using photographs taken by the crew on board the International Space Station as the space craft orbited the earth. The video covers the period of August to October, and the shows the flyover over the main continents and a number of aurorae captured over the United States, the south of Australia, and the Indian Ocean.

If you missed all the separate videos (this, that, and the other), here’s a chance to catch König’s compilation that has been refurbished, smoothed, denoised, and deflickered for your viewing pleasure.

Auroras as Seen From Space

Earlier on this month, YouTube user yesterday2221 used 600 still photos from NASA’s Image Science and Analysis Laboratory and created a time-lapse video of the view from the International Space Station (ISS) as it orbits the Earth at night. If you missed that, refresh your memory.

YouTuber user, isoeph, has collected raw data from the same NASA source to create another time-lapse video, this time of the auroras as they would be as seen from the ISS in its low Earth orbit.

The Big Caption

Considering that reading a lot makes my brain hurt, I particularly love Boston.com’s The Big Picture for its “news stories in pictures” ethic. Today I stumbled onto designer Ian Collins’ foil to the somewhat serious nature of The Big Picture.

Collins’ ongoing project, The Big Caption, is a supplement to Boston.com’s popular series. Collins sources photos from The Big Picture and attaches witty/random/off-colour captions to them for comic relief. Have a look at some of them after the jump.

Breathtaking Deep Space Photos From Hubble

After a much need 1 billion dollar refurbishment in May, the 19-year old Hubble space telescope has been made more powerful and able to peer even deeper into the cosmos. And last week, NASA shared the some breathtaking deep space photos taken by Hubble since the repair. Take a look at some of the galactic images after the jump.

Rare Star Wars Photos

Australian-based Lifelounge have come across rare sci-fi images (some previously unpublished) and wanted to share them with the Internet. From Chewy copping a feel, to C-3PO with his head off, the photos offer a humourous glimpse into the making of George Lucas’ epic Star Wars saga. See some of the images in the gallery below.

Sorry I Missed Your Party

However empty you think your beer glass may be, you can solace in the fact that somewhere in the world, another person who is having a worse time than you. In the same vein as the misfortunes on Fuck My Life, Texts from Last Night, and Awkward Family Photos, comes a site that sifts through photos from parties that you missed but really should have attended. Here are some of my favourites:

Thank Goodness It’s LAN Party Friday!

Isn’t it weird that the kind of people who dress like they’re really into a 90s concept of hackerdom probably the most boring ilife? I mean, what are these guys up to, updating their Friendster pages? Buying an album on iTunes and actually burning it onto a CD?

Strange Boobs

It seems like I’ve been posting a lot of pictures of scary boobs lately. This photo I guess kind of echoes my feelings, because it appears to actually be trying to run away from the woman it’s attached to.

Condiments of the Night

I expect it from some college kids or bummed out looking dudes, so when well dressed bankers pass out in a fast food joint and heartlessly pour condiments on their friend’s head, it’s like falling in love all over again.

No Want

I’ve never quite seen two people be so totally sexually repulsed by each other as this pair.

Amazing Aurora Borealis

James Pugsley’s site Astronomy North contains some amazing photos of the Aurora Borealis.

Yellowknife – Northwest Territories

This photo was taken in October of 2008 along the Ingraham Trail near Yellowknife using a Canon 5D, 400 ISO, Aper 2.8 for 13 seconds. The circular formation on the left indicates that a bombardment of particles is about to begin.

An Exceptionally Tall Curtain

An exceptionally tall curtain above an Ingraham Trail cabin. The tallest auroras are known to reach low-Earth orbit satellites 600km overhead. The bottom edge of this aurora is approximately 100 km above the surface.

A classic Yellowknife Performance

A classic Yellowknife performance, with all of the celestial characters. As the moon rises in the East, the magnetic field lights up over Yellowknife’s famous houseboats.
