The Birds Of Anger: A Video Game Horror Film

As part of the their Epictober Film Festival, G4tv has created a set of three video game-related horror films. The Birds of Anger, directed by Gregg Bishop, takes the immensely popular mobile game Angry Birds and transforms it into a rather disturbing tale. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror masterpiece The Birds, Bishop’s 8-mintue short film tells the story of the the Bacon family who are paid a visit by their neigbour, Anne. The unwelcome guest has brought them a basket of eggs and has unwittingly ruffled some feathers. See The Birds of Anger below.

The other two Epictober films include twisted takes on Mario Kart and Duck Hunt. See those horror flicks after the jump.

Tobias Funke’s “I Just Blue Myself” Ice Cream

Arrested Development was cancelled way before its time. Since the season finale in 2006, fans of the incredibly funny witty TV series have been praying for its return. At the recent New Yorker Festival, audiences broke out into rapturous applause when the series creator Mitch Hurwitz announced that the show (and movie!) would return to TV screens in 2013.

Overcome with happiness, illustrator Jon Defreest decided to pay homage to the show and a very special member of the Bluth family by creating a flavour of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Called I Just Blue Myself, the flavour celebrates the questionable sexuality of the family’s analyst and therapist (shortened to analrapist), Tobias Fünke.

Defreest has whipped up more ice cream flavours based on pop culture characters including Dexter, Ron Swanson, and The Dude. Have a look at those after the jump.

Grab Your Tongs for the “Braaiday” Song

In a tribute to a South Africa institution, Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues have created a song all about the merits of National Heritage Day Braai Day.

In a parody of Rebecca Black’s infamous Friday song, Watts and his hipster friends wax lyrical about the shopping for the right meat, applying the right amount of marinade, and the proper beverages to be consumed. An obligatory black rapper makes an appearance for no reason whatsoever and he likes his women like he does his steak — with meat on the bone.

Check out Braaiday below.

Cowboys & Asians

You’ll remember Freddie Wong for his el33t VFX skills in Future First Person Shooter, First Person Mario, and many other videos (at the end of June, Wong posted his 100th video on YouTube!)

In his latest creation, he sends his geek cred into the stratosphere. Cowboys & Aliens director, Jon Favreau, invited Wong onto the universal set and provided all the resource to creates the video. Favreau appears in it and Wong gets to use the actual wrist gun worn by Daniel Craig, although he experiences an issue that constantly plagues gamers. Check out Cowboys & FreddieW below.

Cowboys & Aliens releases in the U.S. on July 29th. South African audiences will have wait until the film canisters cross the Atlantic ocean, the local release is only set for August 19th.

Anger is Illogical

YouTube user OneMinuteGalactica combines audio from old educational films with visuals from Star Trek to create a nerdy instructional film where Paul (played by Spock) and Pete (played by Captain Kirk) learn some important interpersonal skills. Check out “Anger is Illogical” below.

There are a few more of these spoof educational films including one in which Indiana Jones hilariously learns about formal etiquette at dinner parties and Clark Kent gets schooled on safety in the office. See those after the jump.

Kagiso Lediga: Chicken Excellence Officer

Some months back when Trevor Noah became the CEO of Cell C, I wondered what other local comedians Rob Van Vuuren and Loyiso Gola would like to shill if they could. Shame on me for forgetting funny man Kagiso Lediga whose face alone is enough to have me in stitches.

I believe he could sell bacon at a bar mitzvah and richly deserves an endorsement deal. The purveyors of fine flame-grilled peri-peri chicken realized this and recently gave him a prestigious job title in their company, that of chicken excellence officer. The humourous announcement popped up this past Friday. I’ve watched it countless times, LOL’d, and now have a serious hankering for Nando’s. In case you missed it, check it out below.

Update: Upon seeing the killer parody, Cell C’s actual CEO, Lars Reichelt, sent over two 21.6 Mbps speed sticks to Nando’s saying they should consider adding Speedchicken to their menu. Never one to back down from a challenge, Nando’s set about experimenting. Here are the results.

Star Wars Meets Queen in “Midichlorian Rhapsody”

Guessing from the title, you’d think this is an epic Star Wars/Queen parody. And you’d be right, you big nerd ;)

In six glorious minutes the Midichlorian Rhapsody tells the story of Anakin’s descent into the dark side of the Force. It’s set to the tune of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, complete with new lyrics.

Rambo II: The Musical

Vietnam vet John Rambo is not just a bad-ass killing machine, he also does musicals. In this touching duet his melancholic blubbering is uplifted by Co Bao’s dramatic vocals, telling him that he (is) not expendable.

This spoof was brought to you by Jon and Al Kaplan.

Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind)

Unlike Jay-Z, rapper Alex Warren doesn’t get to reference world famous landmarks because he lives in Newport, Wales. Warren’s tongue-in-cheek version of Empire State of Mind talks about the fantastic sights of his hometown including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and the plentiful supply of designated parking zones.

The parody has been viewed over 300,000 times since its release on July 20th. Check out Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind) below. There are subtitles in case you don’t fully comprehend the Welsh accent.

BONUS: On a more local tip, Delidave and Eracode rap humourously about Cape Town life in a spoof of one of NWA’s most well known songs. You’ll find Straight Outta Kloof Street after the jump.

The Big Caption

Considering that reading a lot makes my brain hurt, I particularly love Boston.com’s The Big Picture for its “news stories in pictures” ethic. Today I stumbled onto designer Ian Collins’ foil to the somewhat serious nature of The Big Picture.

Collins’ ongoing project, The Big Caption, is a supplement to Boston.com’s popular series. Collins sources photos from The Big Picture and attaches witty/random/off-colour captions to them for comic relief. Have a look at some of them after the jump.
