Whippet, Whippet Good!

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you’ll know that we love our zany whippet, Panya.

Twitter user Derick (@nhovha) tweeted at us today with this:

While whippets do look good in hats (example), you may recognize the specific headgear in Derick’s image. You may also have noted the play on words there, based on Devo’s single, “Whip It”. If you didn’t, then here’s a chance for you to experience the music video. It contains a cross-eyed Asian lass brandishing a gun, a maternal figure offering everyone some of her pie (literal, I think), and the band members wearing rather odd red hats. It was the 80s so none of that really needs explaining.

[thanks Derick!]

Onelargeprawn Turns Two!

If there is one decent trait about me, I’d like to think it is that I am consistent. You can depend on me to perpetually bore Lucy Furr about all things Android and to be continually grumpy with work colleagues. I’m also consistent when it comes to forgetting things.

Last year, on this very same date, I thought this humble blog turned one, only to find out it had happen the day before. As expected, I’ve done it again. Onelargeprawn turned two, yesterday. It’s been a pretty tough year and I haven’t always been able to blog as much as I would have liked. A few of our friends offered to help out here and there so I’d like to thank contributors Macross, Easy, Cloud_Ratha, and GoDsGiMp for taking the time to create fantastic content for us. And of course, a hearty thanks go out to you, dear reader, for visiting, interacting with us in the comments, and sharing our content on Twitter and Facebook. It’s your support that keeps the blog running – please click the Google Ads if you get a chance, it pays for the beers and breath mints we love so very much.

Aside from the blog, a very special pet of ours is celebrating her very first birthday today, our most wonderful and zany whippet, Panya. She has been through quite a bit this year and it’s been mostly my shoes and video game controllers. For her birthday, she asked us to make her a party hat and take a photo of her. We obliged, and couldn’t help but share it with you.

And here is our fox terrier cross, Mina, looking decidedly miserable in her party hat.

On behalf of Panya, Mina and all of us at Onelargeprawn we’d like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support these last two years – things just wouldn’t be same without you. Happy holidays to those of you en vacance already, good luck with the Christmas shopping ’cause you’ll need it – the malls are crazy already, and if you’re working through the holidays we feel your pain.

:rainbow: Double Rainbows for you all! :rainbow:

PS: If you’ve visited the blog before you may have seen Panya in episodes of Who Let The Dogs Out. In case you hadn’t, you can find a few of my favourite shots of her after the jump.

Who Let The Dogs Out 4: Behind The Scenes

Sometimes I wish I the ghost of Henri Cartier-Bresson would inhabit my body. It’s not just because I want to have a suave French accent, more so for his talent for snap-shooting photography. His goal was to capture the candid moments of life and it’s that kind of thing I attempt to do when I snap Mina and Panya on our outings.

I’m far from being an accomplished photographer so I end up with a boatloads of crap images which I have to sift through before finding a few gems to post here on the blog. I see a lot of bum shots, and ordinarily that would be a good thing, but in my case, the rear ends belong to a pair of dogs. In any case I thought I’d share some of these rubbish shots with you after the jump.

Who Let The Dogs Out 3: Return to Paradise

If you follow us on Twitter and visit the blog occasionally, you may know of our two puppies – Mina the fox terrier terrorist and Panya our whippet of destruction. When they’re not lounging about at home chewing on all of my stuff, we like to take them for walkies. It’s usually up the mountain close to where we live, but for treats, they get to run amok on the beach.

Yesterday was such a great day so we got up early (9:00am) and headed out to Sunset Beach in Milnerton. You might think this déjà vu – we have been to that very beach in Who Let The Dog Out #1. In episode 2, they escaped to Arniston, and led lives of “baie mooi honde”. Now, in episode 3, they return to paradise to frolic and pester little children. We had our camera on hand and snapped a couple of photos to share with you. Find them after the jump.

Who Let The Dogs Out 2: Escape to Arniston

I don’t know what you’ve been up to all week but I’ve been sitting at my new desk in a new office for a new job and been battling my way around InDesign. I’ve felt like a retard most of the time but it hasn’t gotten me down (for a change) because I’ve been able to drift off into lovely daydreams about last weekend.

And before any of you jump to conclusions about Prawn’s holey underpants (reference), here’s the real story…

We piled dogs and all into the car and drove through the green and rolling countryside to a self-catering cottage in the utterly charming seaside village of Arniston. The cottage was adequate with a fireplace that worked eventually, and a braai that worked brilliantly (how typical). The village was quiet and peaceful with the only real buzz going on at the hotel on Saturday afternoon when people gathered to watch some rugby thing on the telly.

The beaches right near the village were beautiful but a short walk into the national park revealed panoramic views from cliff top paths, a cave large enough to park a wagon and a span of oxen in, and one of the most spectacular and unspoiled beaches I’ve seen.

We took our dogs everywhere we went and they had an absolute ball. We strolled along sandy roads, peed behind bushes, splashed in the ice-blue ocean, and bought huge delicious oysters from a guy who had “Doctor Satan” tattooed across his forehead. On our drives down country roads we stopped every few hundred metres to have a closer look at fascinating things like birds, bokkies, windmills, and an old ox wagon. Against my better judgement we even climbed the rickety wooden ladders to the top of the lighthouse at Cape Agulhas – it really was worth it though because the view from the top was great.

All in all it was the most fantastic weekend and we’re dying to go back as soon as we can.

See some of our happy snaps after the jump.

Who Let The Dogs Out?

Aside from our screen printing escapade and attempt at baking, I know we haven’t posted any personal stuff on the blog but it’s a lazy Sunday evening and I’m sitting here in my favourite holey underpants so it’s a good a time as any.

We try to take our puppies, Mina (Big Min is her gangsta name) and Panya (Lil’ Pun) for walks as regularly as possible, but we’ve been a little bad this week. They like walking on the mountain and scampering around in Tokai forest, but they absolutely love the beach – there’s so much seaweed and crab shells to eat and throw up later, charming I know.

Earlier this morning we bundled the puppies into the car and headed off to Sunset Beach for a little walk. Two hours later, after chasing balls, meeting everyone on the beach (Panya is such an attention-seeker), and with bellies full of sand, the tired mutts were home. We took some happy snaps of the walkabout and thought we’d share them with you. Find them after the jump. Panya is the grey one.

Cute of the Day: Panya, Chii, and a Pygmy Jerboa

The day started off as it usually does – cigarette, coffee, internet, work internet, ciggie, internet, ciggie, casual insult, ciggie, internet, internet. And for some reason, I am inexplicably drawn to cute content today. First there were the photos of Panya, the newest addition to our family of pets. She’s about 6 weeks old, and such a sweetie pie, except when she decides to nom on our ears during the middle of the night.

Then there was Chii, the shiba inu that puts on the biggest smile whenever her master is nearby. It’s adorable.

And now, the pygmy jerboa. According to Wikipedia, jerboas are hopping desert rodents with long tufted tails, very long hind legs, and quite possibly the cutest things in the world.

If you found any cute stuff today, be sure to send it to along to us.
