Detective Pikachu for Nintendo 3DS piqued my interest when I first saw the trailer, mostly because it was unlike anything else in the Pokémon universe of games. A Pikachu with a grumpy, old-man personality? A Pikachu that’s a bit of a lech? It’s weird enough to prompt a closer look at the whodunit game from developer Creatures Inc. Will we solve the case? I grab my magnifying glass and don deerstalker hat to find out.
Story of Seasons is what resulted after a spat between two warring video game publishers fought over popular IP Harvest Moon. I covered the history of this in my Harvest Moon review, so now I have a chance to see how the other half lives in Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns. Is a farming game just a farming game? Or is it a version of Animal Crossing with humans in it? Grab the scythe on the way out to reap what I’ve sown in this review.
I had to go back and check, but it turns out that Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy is the first Layton game we’ve ever reviewed, despite there being a veritable slew of Layton games in existence. Okay, not a slew…more like…six, or seven if you include this one. Nine if you include spin-offs. And one movie. I’ve played Layton games before, but this one takes things in a slightly different direction, so let’s grab our magnifying glasses and get sleuthing for this review!
Miitopia is Nintendo’s vision of a fantasy RPG in the vein of Tomodachi Life. It’s about as weird as it sounds, minus the bizarre vocal synth talking. Look, it’s best you just come with me, because this review is going to be an adventure from start to finish. Oh, and be a dear and grab that sword on the way out?
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a full remake of the SNES game, Fire Emblem Gaiden (a Japanese word here meaning “side story”). The game was never localised for the Western market until now, and Intelligent Systems has done a complete overhaul of the game to bring us what was once considered the “black sheep of the Fire Emblem family”. Nintendo has been riding high on Fire Emblem games recently, and they are much beloved by fans, but can a remake of an older game be anything as good as the newer stuff coming out, like, say, Fire Emblem Fates (which we reviewed here)? Read on to find out!
The Mario sports games are some of those perennial things that you can count on reappearing every year or so. You may not get every single one of them every year, but you’re guaranteed to see at least one in any given year. It’s with some surprise, then, that we see the release of Mario Sports Superstars, a compilation of five sports games all rolled into one. Go grab the soccer ball, tennis ball, baseball, golf ball, and horse..err…ball, and meet me down at the pitch green court course diamond for the review.
Yoshi’s Woolly World was a title we reviewed two years ago (Ed: That long??), and rated it one of the best games we’d ever played. Nintendo apparently agreed, because, given the limited install base of the Wii U, they’ve remade the game for Nintendo 3DS, while adding in a whole bunch of new content that the Wii U gamers don’t get. Let’s get our knitting needles out as we review Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World.
Last year, the Nintendo Wii U received one of the most brilliant games for it: Super Mario Maker (reviewed by us over here). It allowed you to create and play your own Mario levels, and then connect to the Internet and share your level with the world. To date, gamers around the globe have created well over several million Super Mario Maker courses, which is impressive given the small-ish installed user base for the Wii U. To shake things up, Nintendo brings Super Mario Maker to the 3DS, so let’s grab our construction hats and see what’s new.
