PONPONPON! A Surreal J-Pop Music Video

I know more about the Hadron Collider than what goes on in the minds of some Japanese people. In the music video for her debut J-pop single for Warner Music Japan, “PONPONPON”, blogger and model Kyary Pamyu Pamyu welcomes you to her “doll house”. It’s a rather odd place where floating brains and eyes embedded in toast are commonplace, and even her farts are strikingly colourful. You must see this video, be warned though, the tune can be extremely catchy and/or unbearably annoying.

If you’d like an English translation of the lyrics, see it at Wonky Translation. If this video made complete sense to you, then do drop us a comment and let us know what any of this madness means.

You’ll never be better than Commander Shepard

Mass Effect 2 was one of the best video games to have appeared during 2010. One of the reasons, I suspect, is because of its protagonist, Commander Shepard, possibly one of the most badass people in the history of sci-fi. So it’s no wonder that there’s now a song dedicated to him (sorry, all of you who played a female version of Shepherd…you don’t get a showing!). You can watch that song, made by Youtube user MandaloreMovies, right here.

The Symphony of Science: Ode to the Brain

Headed up by composer/video producer John Boswell, the Symphony of Science is a musical project that aims to teach the fundamentals of science through an interesting channel – that of music.

Video clips featuring renowned scientists such as Robert Winston, Bill Nye, and Carl Sagan are combined with the goodness of Auto-Tune to create rather unique and illuminating science music videos. This educational series saw its ninth episode just released and it waxes lyrical about the very centre of our nervous system. Check out Ode to the Brain below.

A Heavy Metal Viking Tale Told in LEGO

YouTuber and brick fanatic Paganomation combines heavy metal and LEGO toys to tell a tale of the middle ages where a lucky strike results in simple Norse woodcutter being able to transform the world around him. Everything he touches turns to awesome. It’s sure to be the most hardcore LEGO music video you’ve ever seen. It’s crazy, epic, and very creative indeed. Check out BUILD! below.

Kill Your Co-Workers

Unless you’re a one-man business (and you aren’t a douche), chances are high that you’ll encounter a co-worker who you just want to…invalidate. This rad music video for Flying Lotus explores the theme of killing off irritants in superb style. It starts off with a very happy parade down a town’s main street. The robots have been invited and are having a great time until Rhon, the human, behaves like a dick. It gets bloody from then on, but in a very endearing kind of way.

Check out Kill Your Co-Workers below.

The video was created by graphic designer, Mike Winkelmann. If you’re any good at animation, you can download the 3D models used in the video and create your own. Find the source files on Winkelmann’s website, Beeple.

The 8-Bit Music Video For Moby’s “Wait For Me”

Back in March of this year, electronica star Moby asked his fans to create a music video for his single “Wait for Me”. He offered up USD 5,000 for the best video and USD 1,000 for the two runners-up.

Moby was quite surprised at the response, he thought 30 to 40 entries would be the max, but almost 500 videos were submitted! People voted for their favourite videos on Genero.tv and when it was narrowed down to six finalists, Moby picked the eventual winner.

The winning entry was directed by Nimrod Shapira, but the one we’re going to show you today is by one of the runner-ups, Maik Hempel. Games are supposed to be fun, so Hempel thought of creating a 2D-scrolling arcade game video to try offset the melancholic tone of the song. It’s a great effort, but still bit of a tear-jerker. Have a look at his 8-bit music video to “Wait For Me”.

Beastie Boys “Sabotage” Goes Literal

If you enjoyed David A. Scott’s literal video version of Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart, chances are you’ll like this as well. The commercial producer from upstate New York has created another literal video, this time for the Beastie Boys’ classic track, “Sabotage”.

What you will see below is the cat-friendly version which somehow prevents the video from getting banned in some countries. The subtitles are pretty hard to read so we’d suggest a trip to YouTube to view the full, en-embeddable version.

BONUS: This is not the first time Sabotage has been doctored. Earlier in March, a YouTuber by name of katamaran78 re-created the music video using scenes from Battlestar Galactica. Check out the outstanding mashup that is Galactica: Sabotage.

Soy Tu Aire: An Interactive Music Video

In one of the most striking music visualizations I’ve seen, the video for the single “Soy Tu Aire” by Spanish band Labuat lets you use the mouse to control the movement of an inked line as it moves across the canvas. The site records your effort and at the end of the song, you can re-play it.

It’s beautiful stuff. Check out Soy Tu Aire and let us know what you think.
