“Ukiyo-e Heroes” Turns Video Game Characters Into Japanese Woodblock Art

Illustrator Jed Henry loves the old Japanese art of ukiyo-e, a type of woodblock printing (The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a wonderful example of this technique.) Henry also has a fondness for video games, and as artists like to do, he decided to mash both passions together.

In Ukiyo-e Heroes, Henry has researched and drawn a selection of Nintendo video game characters in the Japanese ukiyo-e style. There are currently 12 designs that feature Mario, Link, Samus, Mega Man, Donkey Kong, Simon Belmont, and a wonderful panel of Street Fighter characters. We Review: Mario Party 9

The Mario Party series of games, essentially a mini-game filled boardgame in a video game (Gameception!), featuring…I don’t really have to tell who it features, do I? Although it’s the longest-running mini-game series, it’s likely the last game in the series for the Wii, so we rolled the dice a few times to see whether a new version of the game was warranted.

The Koopa Call to Arms

King Koopa is at his wit’s end. Despite having an almost unlimited supply of Goombas, tanks, naval vessels, and an air force, it seems that ridding the Mushroom Kingdom of a pudgy plumber has proved more difficult than planned. The great Koopa has now turned to the power of advertising to gain more support for his cause.

In a set of emotionally-charged propaganda posters, Bowser asks the question, “The Koopa are fighting. Why aren’t you?” and calls for residents of Mushroom Kingdom to join the great Koopa cause. See the set of posters after the jump.

Imagine this likely scenario: The “I just need to get to the next save point” excuse has failed and you’ve had to switch your video game off and go to bed. But YouTube user slamacow imagines what their nighttime follies would be in this music video. Spoiler: they dance to bad techno music, but Nyan Cat makes an appearance so it’s not all bad.

Secret Mortal Kombat Fatalities Are Disturbing

The month of April sees the release of the ninth installment of the popular series, Mortal Kombat. While fans look forward to inflicting all manner of brutal harm upon their enemies using their favourite MK characters, Machinima has uncovered footage of some fighters who auditioned for roles in the game but didn’t quite make the cut.

From a cannibalistic Pac-Man to a road-raging Toad, Machinima’s Mortal Kombat Secret Character Tryouts shows the fatalities of these retro, 8-bit characters. Check it out below.

First Person Mario

In an earlier video, Future First Person Shooter, you may recall Freddie Wong’s vision of the future where games like Call of Duty can be as real as life itself.

Freddie’s back with another smashing video, this time with another staple of the gaming world. Together with animator buddy Brandon Laatsch, the duo shows what Super Mario Bros. world 1-1 would look like if it were an FPS title, complete with a mini-map and blood-splattered achievements. Play This: Give Up Robot 2

WAKE UP ROBOT!!!! It is time to DAAAANNCEEeeee (again). Give Up Robot 2 is being touted as possibly the best freeware flash game of 2010. In this 8-bit styled puzzle platformer from Adult Swim, you play as a robot who must jump and swing through a series of chambers filled with all manner of colourful things that could kill you. The trippy, epilepsy-inducing visuals are backed by equally stellar music, and some funny commentary along the way.

IndieGames loves it, Bacon and Games thinks it doesn’t suck, and Gamasutra put it on top spot of their best indie games list of 2010. Prove them right (or wrong), check out the 50 brain-melting levels from the original game and then play #2 at Adultswim.

The Brothers Mario

In this fake trailer created by The Country Club, the famous brothers return to the Mushroom Kingdom for an altogether darker adventure. Shot in the style of Grand Theft Auto IV, it is a more grittier and violent look at life in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario and Luigi have fucked with the wrong person, they’ve stolen stolen coins from Bowser, the baddest gangster around. Taking umbrage, Bowser holds Peach hostage and it’s up to the brothers and the only allies they can trust, Toad and Yoshi, to get her back. It’s an explosive action-fest with some witty dialogue to match. Check out The Brothers Mario below.

Game On: Cute 8-Bit Safe Sex Ad

In an effort to promote safe sex amongst horny teenagers, the “Leicestershire Teenage Pregnancy Partnership” in the United Kingdom has commissioned a cute 8-bit public service advertisement.

In the style of Super Mario Bros and Mega Man, our hero wants to get his “game on” but his princess will not let him into her castle without the prerequisite special item. This video follows his attempts to procure said item. See how it turns out below.

So there you have it. Have fun, play safe, and stay away from the mushrooms.

When I was growing up all the cool kids had a Sega Mega Drive. I had a pithy Sega Master System. I never had a NES or an SNES and had to listen to my friends regaling their stories of derring-do in the Mushroom Kindgom. Bastards.

Super Mario Bros. is one of Nintendo’s most popular games seeing over 40 million copies sold since its release on the NES in 1985. That makes it the second-most best-selling video game in the world (Wii Sports hold top spot). It’s been re-released a number of times and spawned quite a few sequels. You can even play it from the comfort of your web browser, and this brings us to a Jay Pavlina’s tribute to the classic side-scroller.

Super Mario Bros. Crossover is a flash game that recreates the original 8-bit world of the Mushroom kingdom, but adds a whole new level of fun by letting you play as other Nintendo characters. Currently you can choose between Mario, Samus, Mega Man, Simon Belmont, Bill R., Link, and my favourite the bad-ass ninja Ryu Hayabusa. How awesome it that? But wait there’s more – each character plays as they would do in their own game, so Bill can shoot Goombas in the face and Ryu can climb walls and throw deadly shurikens.
