Will You Be My Ghoul Friend?

Monsters need some love, too. And back in the 60s, the Topps candy company tasked the late pulp artist Norman Saunders with painting a series of cards called Frankenstein Valentine Stickers.

Saunders painted iconic monsters from TV and film together with the cute, punny, and creepy pick-up lines they might try on the opposite sex. Mole Man has eyes for your silky skin, while Dracula vants you in vein, and all Zacherle hopes for is a ghoul friend.

Versus/Hearts

Tom and Jerry. Alien versus Predator. Android versus iOS. It’s these rivalries that are at the heart of the cute illustrations by Dan Matutina, an illustrator based in the Philippines. Matutina depicts the love/hate bond between characters from popular culture in the shape of a heart, with each rival making up a symbiotic half of the heart/relationship.

A Special “Shadow of the Colossus” Valentine’s Day Message

From Olly Moss, the man behind the wonderfully minimalist Star Wars posters and Resistance 3’s Saul Bass inspired artwork, comes a very special Valentine’s Day message. Moss based it on the events in a certain PlayStation 2 game by venerable game designer, Fumito Ueda.

Moss tweets, “I made this dumb valentines thing for the girl” but anyone who has experienced the love and loss in Shadow of the Colossus will surely empathize with the message. It lies in wait after the jump.

Why This Kolaveri Di: The Tanglish “Soup” Song

Translated from Tamil, “Why this kolaveri di” means “Why this murderous rage, girl?” The song is taken from the sountrack to an upcoming Tamil film and is performed by playback singer Dhanush. What is more interesting than the quirky title is the tongue that Dhanush sings the song in — Tanglish, a mixture of English and Tamil. Why This Kolaveri Di is also called the Soup song, where soup is Tamil slang for young men who fail at romantic relationships.

The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics

The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics is a cute little animated short film that won an Academy Award in 1966. Based on the book of the same name, this short film, directed by Chuck Jones, tells the story of a line who falls in love with a dot. The love is not reciprocal, for the dot sees the line as too straight, and directs her affections toward the wild and rebellious squiggle. Despite the stern rejection, the line turns to unconventional methods to gain the attention of his love. Does the story have a happy ending? Find out below.

Black Sheep: The Tale of Wind-up Jim

Black Sheep is a locally produced short film directed by Miklas Manneke. The style of the film is reminiscent of Pushing Daisies, and tells the story of Jim, who is born with a wind up key on his back. The key controls his life, and if it were to stop turning, Jim would cease to be living.

Jim is a pariah and is picked on at school for being different, and on a few occasions, he tries to get rid of the very thing that makes him so special. After the unfortunate death of his bubblegum obsessed mother (played by Karin van der Laag of Isidingo fame), Jim decides to leave home and explore the world. Find out what happens in this endearing, albeit slow-going, short film.

It’s wonderful to see South African films getting recognition and Miklas posted on this Twitter page that his short has been selected to take part in RADAR HAMBURG, an international festival for small and independent filmmakers. Congratulations Miklas, and good luck!

Until today, I never knew about Emily Carroll. And I have Google’s Jennifer Hom to thank for that discovery.

Carroll is an artist from Vancouver, British Columbia and in her latest comic, she draws out a tale of a prince who falls in love with an enchanting mermaid, and moves the earth to be with her.
