Dexter Meets Saul Bass

Illustrator Ty Mattson channels Saul Bass in his alternate openining credits to the smashing Showtime series, Dexter. Mattson had initially created a set of minimalist posters, one for each season of the show, highlighting the pivotal moments from each episode. Showtime was thoroughly impressed with his works and subsequently interviewed Mattson for a bonus feature in the season 5 DVD boxset.

Mattson then turned his focus to making the title sequence. With the help of friends from Fashion Buddha, he used his existing poster artwork to create the opening credits to Dexter as if the show was aired in the 1960s.

Cartooned: Minimalist Cartoon Portraits by Ty Lettau

Ty Lettau, a designer from San Francisco, USA, has a penchant for minimalism and pop culture. His love for both genres is clearly seen in his cartooned Flickr set, where he draws popular characters from comics, TV, film, and games in a cartoon style. The Koopa Call to Arms

King Koopa is at his wit’s end. Despite having an almost unlimited supply of Goombas, tanks, naval vessels, and an air force, it seems that ridding the Mushroom Kingdom of a pudgy plumber has proved more difficult than planned. The great Koopa has now turned to the power of advertising to gain more support for his cause.

In a set of emotionally-charged propaganda posters, Bowser asks the question, “The Koopa are fighting. Why aren’t you?” and calls for residents of Mushroom Kingdom to join the great Koopa cause. See the set of posters after the jump.

Emily Carroll’s “The Prince & The Sea”

Until today, I never knew about Emily Carroll. And I have Google’s Jennifer Hom to thank for that discovery.

Carroll is an artist from Vancouver, British Columbia and in her latest comic, she draws out a tale of a prince who falls in love with an enchanting mermaid, and moves the earth to be with her. Iotacons: Wonderful Pixel Portraits by Andy Rash

Andy Rash is a freelance illustrator from Brooklyn, NY and the man responsible for creating character portraits that are light on the details but are packed with WIN!

Rash calls them Iotacons and these low-res full-body portraits stand no more than 25 pixel tall. His series includes a deadly bride, a band of knights who say “Ni”, a pair of odd-ball Kiwi comedians, and even some characters from the bible. Pictogram Movie Posters

You may have seen Wayne Dorrington’s re-telling of Star Wars Episode IV in iconoscope and loved how simple pictograms could be used to such great effect. In his on-going project, Swedish graphic designer, Viktor Hertz, also makes good use of pictograms to capture the basic plot of popular movies such as TRON, Sunshine, and Shaun of the Dead. Pimp my AT-AT

Reminiscent of Brandon Ortwein’s It Would Have Been Cooler As A Van series of illustrations, Glaswegian graphic designer, Seven_Hundred, is pimping the rides belonging to the Galactic Empire. In his latest series of mashups, he applies the paint-jobs of famous vehicles seen on TV, film, and video games to the behemoth AT-AT walkers. Have a look at some of his creations after the jump.

It’s a good thing he is an illustrator too, Stevens creates some wonderful black and white busts and character portraits of popular superheroes and villains. 2011 Formula One Posters

What I know about Formula One comes directly from Wikipedia. It’s not like I dislike the sport, but I use it more as tool to further a different agenda. My significant other, Lucy Furr, finds the roaring sounds of Formula One to be soothing and it is not long before she is asleep on the couch. This accords me precious free time to play my console games. Win!

Irish graphic designer, PJ Tierney, is clearly much more interested in Formula One. And to this effect, he has created a great set of posters for the 2011 Formula One season, featuring all of the 19 circuits that defending World Champion Sebastian Wobbler and other manly gentlemen will be racing on. Tierney incorporates various racing motifs and colours and elements from the flags of the different host countries. Have a look at his Formula One 2011 Poster Series after the jump.

Wonderful Wildlife by Iain Macarthur

Freelance illustrator Iain Macarthur from Swindon, UK uses intricate geometrical patterns to create the faces and bodies of the animals in his series entitled “Wildlife”.
