Intricate Salt Labyrinths

For the past decade, incredibly patient Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto has been creating the most intricate mazes from an unlikely medium. As a tribute to the life of his sister who died of cancer in 1994, Yamamoto spends hours upon hours using a plastic squeezy bottle to create beautiful labyrinthine patterns from household salt.

In an interview with Hi-Fructose, Yamamoto explains the use of salt in his memorial artwork.

Salt seems to possess a close relation with human life beyond time and space. Moreover, especially in Japan, it is indispensable in the death culture. After my sister’s death, what I began to do in order to accept this reality was examine how death was dealt with in the present social realm. I posed several related themes for myself such as brain death or terminal medical care and picked related materials accordingly. I then came to choose salt as a material for my work. This was when I started to focus on death customs in Japan.

… Drawing a labyrinth with salt is like following a trace of my memory. Memories seem to change and vanish as time goes by. However, what I sought for was the way in which I could touch a precious moment in my memories, which cannot be attained through pictures or writings.

Have a look at his salt labyrinths after the jump.

A Touching Piece About A Man & His Dying Dog

Jason Wood is an ex-con and through all the good and the bad, his best friend has been by his side. Last minutes with ODEN is a touching story about Jason’s final farewell to that best friend – a three-legged dog named Oden.

Oden’s journey is about to come to an end, and this emotionally-charged six minute documentary directed by Eliot Rausch, follows Jason’s last minutes with Oden before the dog is euthanised. It’s teary stuff man.

Jason, I may not know you, but I know what you must have felt, as would a lot of pet owners out there. I went through the very same heart-breaking, tear-filled moments when we had to put down FurryLuce’s most beloved cat, Dorian Gray.

He suffered from Acute Renal Failure, and we tried all manner of meds to prolong his life, but it was a vain attempt at avoiding the inevitable. I’m sure Dorian knew he was going to die and instead of making a fuss, he found a quiet place in the house to sleep, waiting for the darkness. I think we tend to suffer more when our pets are sick…

Hiroshima, 64 Years Ago

Earlier in July, the 40th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11 was celebrated. Today, however, another notable but deeply saddening event is remembered.

At approximately 8:15am on August 6th 1945, the U.S. B-29 bomber “Enola Gay” dropped its 4,000 Kg uranium bomb onto the Japanese city of Hiroshima. After freefalling for 57 seconds, the “Little Boy” detonated at an altitude of 580 metres. The calm and sunny Monday morning was shattered by a white light that burned patterns of clothing onto skin and the shadows of bodies onto walls.

The blast wave that followed destroyed almost every building within a three mile radius and the searing heat set off a raging firestorm. With a power of 13 to 16 kilotons, the bomb killed 66,000 people immediately, and by the end of 1945 the death toll was thought to be 140,000.

To mark 64 years since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Boston.com takes a poignant look at the event. There are 34 pictures in total – see them at The Big Picture.

Anti-Smoking Ad Warns of Immiment Robot Apocalypse

We’ve seen a couple of anti-smoking ads that use shock value to get the point across, but this is the first time we’ve seen one that pokes fun at them. This particular ad starts off as any traditional PSA does but quickly takes a turn for the worse – emphysema and lung cancer will be the very least of your problems should you continue to smoke.

Don’t smoke. All of humanity is counting on you!

And we’re Back!

Overnight, the Onelargeprawn blog seems to have suffered a cardiac arrest of sorts, and I was greeted with the dreaded Bandwidth Limit Exceeded error as I tried to log on today. Needless to say, we’re back from the dead thanks to the resuscitate hands of our hosting company Texo – cheers lads  ;-) Transmission will resume shortly.

In case you somehow missed it, the Interweb is awash with news of Michael Jackson’s death. Doctors were unable to revive the king of pop when he experienced a cardiac arrest earlier this morning. His unexpected death has not only devastated fans, but also started speculations as to what killed him. The jokes have begun as well, and it seems Horatio from CSI Miami is on the case.

Is it a little too early for the jokes? Probably, but this is the unstoppable force of the Internet.

It’s not all fun and necrophilia when you’re a zombie. Sometimes the undead live such hard lives.

The Most Terrifying Safety Video Ever

I’ve seen workplace safety in a completely new, vomit-inducing light thanks to this PSA video. This is not a parody, it’s an actual b-grade horror movie workplace safety video filled with pained screams, dismemberment, and bloody death that results from the actions of careless or inattentive employees. Enjoy.

Death by Over-Indulgence

In her Drop Dead Gorgeous series, artist Daniela Edburg makes kitsch photographs of women murdered or about to be killed by consumer goods. The women are obsessed with these products, and their over-indulgence leads or will lead to their untimely deaths.

Asked why she consumer goods had a sinister effect on the women in her photographs, Edburg says:

I guess I am pretty compulsive. That which gives me pleasure one minute, causes guilt the next. I am surprised at how much I like the products I consume, but, if you stop for one second to think about it, it’s absurd. Yet, you can’t stop. [The work] is not a criticism it’s just an exaggeration of my own reality.

Gone Fishing: Left Links in Fridge

The Onelargeprawn blog staff will be away this weekend. The copy-paste elves haven’t had a holiday since the inception of this blog and I thought it would be nice to let them out the basement for once. They will be travelling in the boot of the car, which quite frankly is luxurious compared to the sty the vicious ankle-biters live in now. Any complainers will be summarily used as fishing bait.

Normal transmission will commence on Monday. In the meantime, some links.
