Darth Vader Invades Your GPS

A friend once told me that a dead flea had a better sense of direction than I did, so I had to kill him … in my mind. He’s not half wrong, my path-finding skills are minimal at best and I should really invest in a GPS. I’ve seen a Garmin ad on the television – the one with a salmon using its natural abilities to overcome obstacles and safely arrive at its intended destination. It’s lucky that ad stopped where it did, for salmon have a nasty habit of dropping dead shortly after spawning.

And then there’s Dutch GPS manufacturer, TomTom, who have reached out to the galaxies and obtained the services of a certain dark lord of the sith to provide voice directions while you drive to your destination.  A big bag of WIN right there. Watch the outtakes as Lord Vader records his GPS voice for TomTom. He compels you to turn to the dark side.

Roundabounds, lol. You can buy Vader’s voice at the TomTom official website for USD 12.00.

BONUS: If you liked this, you may enjoy Vader and the romantic subplot.

The Nike Music Shoe

Sportswear giant Nike is going big in Japan with a great campaign for their Free Run+ running shoes. Nike asked the Japanese DJ duo HIFANA to make music by leveraging (love those marketing terms!) the bendable qualities of their new footwear. The duo happily obliged, hooking up the shoes to their sound system and experimenting with the different sounds the shoes made when twisted or bent.

Shot in some secret location in Tokyo, this is their performance.

The homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey in the beginning is a nice touch. If you’d like more technical details on how it’s done, see here.

I believe there will be a disclaimer saying the shoes sold at retail won’t actually make music when you’re using them, which is a pity. The world needs more music.

Flying 101: Kulula’s Livery is Factual, Quite Funny

I got this in an e-mail today, and it thankfully broke the boring monotony that was creating a PowerPoint presentation (I pity the fool who has to sit through this one).

Local airline Kulula has always stood out from the crowd from their odd choice of colour, to their jetsetter ads, and the comical safety demos on the flights. This sense of humour has found its way onto livery that has been applied to their fleet of Boeing 737s.

The airplanes are covered with the Flying 101 livery that shows interesting details about the plane, such as the captain’s window which is marked as the big cheese, the fuel tanks (the go-go juice), to the loo (or mile-high club initiation chamber), and the black box (which is actually orange).

Have a look at some images after the jump.

Toshiba’s “Space Chair” Ad Campaign Soars to New Heights

My mind usually switches off during ad breaks on the TV, I don’t want to be reminded for the 20th time that I can save a rand on feminine pads at my local super market. Perhaps if you sent something into space and video-taped it, I may take an interest.

For their Space Chair ad campaign, electronics manufacturer, Toshiba, did just that to advertise their new REGZA SV LCD TV series. Using a helium balloon, they sent a biodegradable chair to the edge of space and filmed the journey with their own ultra-compact HD camera. Have a look at the ad below.

How awesome was that? The tag line was great – “Armchair viewing, redefined” – pretty cool, no? Hit the jump to see the making of video and some trivia about the project.

Wilkins Coffee Adverts Are Persuasive, Threatening

Despite having an uncle in the furniture business and pricing that is inspired by me, I find product advertisements in South Africa to be a tad bland and uninviting. And in another “they don’t make them like they used to” moment, I found a set of vintage ads that I think are pretty persuasive.

Between 1957 and 1961, a Washington D.C. coffee company commissioned Jim Henson to created a series of  TV commercials to pitch their product. Each commercial was 10 seconds long and featured two puppets named Wilkins and Wontkins. Wilkins pushed the importance of drinking the coffee to Wotkins through physical pain. The commercials are violent, dark, and quite funny. Check it out.
