HP Scanjet Sings “Somebody That I Used to Know” in This Old School Computer Remix

There are many many covers and parodies of Gotye’s unavoidable track “Somebody That I Used to Know”, so much so that the singer himself created a supercut, stitching together over 100 YouTube fan clips.

It would have been the cover to end all covers had it not been for YouTube user bd594 who recreates the song using an unlikely band of musicians. Watch as a troupe of hard drives and oscilloscopes provides the bassline and an HP Scanjet 3C stands in for the vocalists in this old school computer remix of “Somebody That I Used to Know”.

Stirling and Hollens Cover Game of Thrones

Musicians Lindsey Stirling and Peter Hollens weren’t fiddling around when it came to their cover of the Game of Thrones main title sequence. The 140 separate tracks that make up their cover are made up solely of vocals and violin. Hollens recorded over 100 vocal tracks and is seen mouthing off as Stirling plucks her violin like a fiery Targaryen. Have a look at their stirring rendition below.

Remixes That I Used to Know

Feeling so happy you could die? Singer-songwriter and Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used to Know” is a rather depressing yet catchy tune.

The song has been fodder for other artists and the number of remixes and covers have been on the rise. The most popular cover (by YouTube views) has been orchestrated by Canadian indie band, Walk off the Earth, where the five band members simultaneously play the song using a single guitar. With her cover, Ingrid Michaelson provided the vocals and played all her own instruments, and in his version, Junior Blender adds a touch of reggae to the mix. Have a listen to these covers after the jump.

Springsteen. Fallon. Whip Your Hair.

I’m getting old man. The other day when visiting family out in Kommetjie, I noticed my cousin dancing about like a child and mumbling something about whipping her hair back and forth. I questioned her with the standard “Excuse me, WTF are you doing?” and she was like, “Lol, it’s Willow Smith silly”. Silly me indeed, I hadn’t noticed that Will Smith’s 10-year old daughter had made a single. I listened to it and thought nothing of it, until now.

On a notable episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in November, the host donned the guise of Neil Young and together with legendary singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen did a haunting rendition of Willow Smith’s “Whip Your Hair”. Check it out.

Which version do you prefer? Let us know.

Major Lazer: Halo

We have featured Major Lazer on the blog before, and from the number of comments (a whole two!) it seems the Jamaican commando isn’t exactly popular. Would it help to know that the poor chap lost an arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984?

In any case, Diplo and Switch are back, and have teamed up with Jamaican dancehall rapper Elephant Man to cover Beyonce’s Grammy-winning ballad, Halo. It’s really well done, I like it. Give it a listen below or download it and let us know what you think.
