Time to Get Ugly With Jonah Hex

We have just returned from watching Iron Man 2. It was entertaining although not as great as the first one. Also, whilst Don Cheadle is a great actor, I really did miss Terence Howard as Rhodey. He and Downey Jr. had a great chemistry, something I didn’t quite see in Cheadle’s performance. It was admirable but a little flat. Anyways, you’re clearly not here for that.

Just as Iron Made made it from the comic book to the big screen, a DC Comics antihero who has been around since the 70s will soon be crossing the divide. In the upcoming action flick Jonah Hex, the surly bounty hunter is given a chance to clear warrants on his head if he tracks down and stops the plans of the villainous Quentin Turnbull. Hex was left scarred by Turnbull in the past so payback is certainly going to get ugly.

The first trailer hit the Internet this weekend. Check it out below – be warned it contains Megan Fox so you may be repulsed or titillated.

The role of Jonah Hex is played by Josh Brolin (Planet Terror, No Country for Old Men), with John Malkovich (Shadow of the Vampire, Con Air) playing Turnbull. And in one of her most challenging roles, Megan Fox tackles the role of Leila, a gun-wielding prostitute.

Jonah Hex releases in U.S. theatres on June 18th (movie poster) but it seems South African audiences may have to wait until August 3rd to see it.

Update (May 17th): Warner Brothers has recently released a set of new character posters for the movie. We thought you might like to see them. Megan Fox is there by default, but the inconvenient title text is obscuring her naughty bits.

Superhero Gender Swap!

Word from the Daily Mail is that the Chastity Cher is in the final stages of operation gender-swap and will next month ask a judge to formally change her gender to male and forthwith be known as Chaz Cher. Good on her/him.

We now move from the realm of normality to that of the extraordinary, and consider what male superheroes would look like if they were female. Two comic artists Mariano Navarro and Hernán Cabrera do just that – for each month of the year since 2007, they take a male character from a comic book or cartoon and create a suitably sexy female equivalent. Their gender reversals are freakishly awesome (note to self: find better synonyms).

Check out some of our favourite superhero gender reversals after the jump (possibly NSFW).

A to Z of Awesomeness

A comic book artist by the name of Neill Cameron is on a quest to draw STUFF that is AWESOME. Calling his project “Neill’s A-Z of Awesomeness”, he draws a character daily based on suggestions from his Facebook group, Twitter, and comments on his blog.

So for each letter of the alphabet I am going to let people suggest a character, and I will then draw that character, on a daily basis. Got it? You are also allowed to suggest what that character should be doing, with bonus points awarded for imaginative alliteration.

His wonderful series of illustrations is currently up to the letter U. Check out some of comically cool creations below.

Blu-ray Review: Iron Man

Meet Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr). The son of deceased weapons manufacturer, Howard Stark, Tony is an arrogant (yet charming) billionaire and genius who spends as much time building machines as he does chasing the ladies. As a stop on his globe-trotting tour, Tony is visiting Afghanistan to promote his company’s state-of-the-art missile system, the Jericho, when his convoy is attacked and he is taken prisoner by a terrorist group, the Ten Rings. Injured in the attack, Tony is nursed back to health by fellow prisoner, surgeon, and translator, Dr. Yinsen (Shaun Toub). Already possessing a vast cache of Stark Industries weapons, the terrorists want Tony to build the new Jericho system for them as well, and in exchange they will set him free.

Will Tony submit to the terrorists or does he have other plans in mind? Read more after the jump.

Blu-ray Review: Men in Black

Adapted from Lowell Cunningham’s cult Marvel/Malibu comic book series, Men in Black is definitely a comedy sci-fi classic that deserves a place in your Blu-ray collection. This film is action packed and highly entertaining with excellent performances by the inspired pairing of Tommy Lee Jones (Agent Kay) and Will Smith (Agent Jay) who protect the earth from the scum of the universe.

James Edwards (Will Smith), an energetic young NYPD detective is recruited to a top-secret underground government agency known as Division 6 by Agent Kay. The agents from Division 6 are known as the Men In Black on account of the smart black suits they wear as a uniform, and as Agent Jay (Will Smith) says himself, he does make that suite look good. The suit is just the beginning; Kay shows Jay the ropes and introduces him to an incredible array of extra terrestrials that have come to earth for one reason or another. Initially it seems that most of the alien visitors are benevolent or just slightly crooked, but soon through a bizarre chain of events involving a farmer and a small ginger cat, Kay and Jay realise that they are dealing with a deadly intergalactic terrorist plot…
