ThreeA JDF Armstrong: Help Japan. Get a Toy.

Disasters are a terrible thing. Normally unexpected, they can leave a nation battered, bruised, and broken. The Japan disaster is indeed a horrifying experience and has left the world speechless. People gathered around and watched a mighty Japan shaken to its core by a record 8 magnitude earthquake followed by a massive tsunami – a towering wall and unstoppable force of water, annihilating everything in its path.

If there is any upside to this event, it is that the brute force and ugly side of nature hit one of the most disaster-resilient nations in the world. While some earthquake-safe buildings still stand, thousands upon thousands of people are feared dead and many more are left homeless, having lost everything in the quake and resulting floods.

Japan might be strong, but its times like these where the world witnesses how fragile a nation, and life itself, can be. Quickly after the events started unfolding, a snowball effect began happening from people and organizations all around the world, who all tried to get involved and offer support. Millions of dollars have already been raised by the help of the Red Cross, private organizations, celebrities, etc. But its still not enough. The nation of Japan have many years still ahead of them of repairing and restoring what has been broken and lost, and any and all donations to help those suffering are still needed. Food, clothes, shelter… every bit goes towards some form help.

Who am I, and why I’m telling you this? My name is Simon, and I am the owner of a new South African vinyl toy and limited edition collectible shop called Vinyl Destination. And I’d like to bring attentionĀ  to a new way that you can help those in Japan. I bet you all would agree that there are few things as satisfying than the gift of giving, especially to those who are in need, and one little toy company is really stepping up its efforts to help. Find out how after the jump.

The 501st Stormtrooper Legion Presents: The TK Project

The 501st Stormtrooper Legion (or Vader’s Fist) is the Empire’s official costuming organization here on Earth. Their manifesto seeks to promote interest in Star Wars, bring like-minded fans and costume enthusiasts together, and to use their resources for charitable acts.

In a similar vein to the Vader Project, the legion’s TK Project is a charity event where its members create one-off, wacky stormtrooper helmets. These helmets will be auctioned off and the proceeds go to the Make a Wish foundation.

The 501st TK Project blog keeps track of the entries thus far and we picked out a couple of our favourite designs. Have a look at the after the jump.

The Lost Art of Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino, The Weinstein Company, and The Upper Playground Art Gallery in Los Angeles have teamed up to raise money for the victims of the Haiti Earthquake. For “The Lost Art of Inglourious Basterds” exhibition, 13 artists were asked to make a poster based on their interpretation of Tarantino’s Oscar-nominated flick. The results are fantastic to say the least.

Six copies of each poster were made; they were numbered and autographed by the acclaimed director, and priced not at a 100 Nazi scalps, but a more realistic USD 300.00 each.

The exhibition previewed last night at The Upper Playground Art Gallery, and I’d be surprised if the posters weren’t snapped up in minutes. Have a look at them after the jump.

Movember Madness: Grow a ‘Tache, Donate to CANSA, Win Big!

Male prostate cancer is topic that may be dear to a man’s heart, well it’s more lower down, according to our in-house veterinarian.

Gavin over at LazyGamer is running a drive to raise money for charity and spread the awareness of prostate cancer and male depression. It’s a worthwhile cause on its own, but to sweeten the pot, they have two Rockstar Games hampers up for grabs – one will be given away to a randomly selected donator, the other will go to the individual who grows the gnarliest, most man-tastic moustache in the month on November Movember.

To find out how you can donate to this good cause and take part in Movember Madness, please head to LazyGamer.

Top Tip: If you’re stuck for ‘tache grooming ideas, have a look at a clip from the World Moustache Championships 2009 and read up on moustache styles.
