Black Holes are Assholes

Black holes are like the most terrifying serial killers in the universe. You shouldn’t need reasons to stay away from black holes but if you’re looking for one, here’s a little animation for you.

In this artist rendering from NASA, a star passes a little too close to a black hole and experiences what is called a “tidal disruption”. The star is torn to pieces and the black hole wears the debris like a memento. Check it out below.

The Black Hole Project

Simply put, black holes suck. Thankfully, Fabian Oefner’s Black Hole project is attractive and far from sucky.

Inspired by the drippy paint style of Jackson Pollock, the Swiss photographer and artist decided to investigate the effect of centrifugal force on paint. He dripped coloured shades of acrylic paint onto a metal rod that was connected to a drill. When the drill was switched on, the paint whirled away from the rod, and Oefner’s camera flashed at 1/40000 of a second, capturing the images of the paint in motion. Have a look at some of his rather colour Black Hole images after the jump.

Stephen Hawking’s Big Ideas…Made Simple

In A Brief History of Time, everyone’s favourite theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking, tries to explain complex cosmological concepts to the non-scientific layman. If you don’t have the time to read the 212-page bestseller, have a look at this wonderful cutout animation produced by The Guardian, where messieurs Hawking and Penrose explore the cosmos to find out what is at the centre of a black hole.

This video is part of the The Guardian’s Made Simple series. You can see the other videos here.
