The “Darksiders” Review

OK, let’s get down to business. In Darksiders by Vigil Games, you play the role of War, one of the biblical “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. You have been mistakenly summoned to Earth where an almighty battle between Heaven and Hell is taking place. Having interfered with something you shouldn’t have, you are summoned to the “headmaster’s office”, given a severe talking to, and stripped of your awesome powers. As a last chance at redemption, you request to be sent back to Earth to find out who was responsible for bringing on the apocalypse prematurely. Darksiders chronicles your journey through god forsaken, scorched lands, ravaged citadels, subterranean lairs, and dusty plains in a quest for answers.

Let’s go through the mechanics that make up the soul of this a “whodunit” hack and slash extravaganza. Hit the jump to read the rest of the review.

Awesome Voxel Art by Metin Seven

I am lacking sleep. This morning I nearly used antihistamine cream as toothpaste and Deems remarked that at least my teeth wouldn’t itch. I suppose he has a fair point there. Later on the day, I tried to use my security tag to open a door and found that it just flung wide open – I was about to launch into a diatribe about the company’s lax security measures until I realized that the door led to the men’s toilet.

So I’m still half-asleep and I hope my barometer of awesomness isn’t poked as well, but I do think this is pretty sweet stuff. Dutch designer Metin Seven has created some fantastic illustrations of the voxel kind. A voxel is like a pixel in 3D, and Seven uses them in his character designs and more interestingly to put a 3D spin on classic 2D games. Have a look at some of his pixel illustrations after the jump.

Adventures With “A”

So I have the (dis)pleasure of attending a Microsoft Word training course. Whilst my colleague and general misanthrope, Feeyyaad, was busy creating the world’s ugliest table, I pondered about strippers, calamari, and typography. The latter led me to the most awesome works of Cape Town illustrator, Brandt Botes.

From amputees to assholes, his “Adventures with A” series show the typographic adventures of the first letter. Check them out after the jump.

It’s all in the Muti!

TGIF. And none too sooner, I’m running on fumes. Whilst the FIFA World Cup madness is going to be happening down in Long Street, I’ll be heading in the opposite direction, up Kloof Street to AFRIKA!

A collaboration between Muti Clothing and designer studio Am I Collective, AFRIKA! is a range of tees inspired the dark continent which we call home. The peeps over at Groundglass created a catchy viral spot for the launch. Check it out below.

The event starts at 6:30pm tonight at The Garage, 8 Kloof Street. See you there.

How to use an Apostrophe

I spend a lot of time on the interwebs, and I can’t begin to tell you how often I see the misuse of an apostrophe. I got home last night and found this amazing website in one of my RSS feeds. I’ve posted it up on facebook, twitter, and now here too. I wish I could tattoo it on my body somewhere too.

It’s all written by a genius named Matthew Inman. His other sites are fantastic as well, and The Oatmeal seams to be the center of all of them. Have a look!

The Perfect Unison’s Wooden Headphones

I don’t usually keep wish lists, They are a sobering reminder of the amazing things out there that I can never afford to buy. If I were to have one, these headphones would certainly be at the top of the list. A headphone company by the name of The Perfect Unison got together with Dutch artist, Parra, to create a striking headphone design. Made out of nine layers of Finnish Birch Wood and silkscreen printed by Parra, only 50 of these beautiful wooden headphones were made. Have a look at the images after the jump.
