Play This: 2048

Numbers, numbers everywhere. Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli’s numbers game 2048 is becoming a viral sensation. Some go so far as to say it’s the addictive successor to Flappy Bird.

In a concept that is similar to Asher Vollmer’s Threes, 2048 is a game where you need to combine numbers on a 4×4 grid until you unlock the magic tile of 2048. Each move introduces a new number onto a board and while it might be deceptively easy to get started, it’s another thing altogether to reach your goal.

Play This: Maverick Bird

At the height of its existence, the fat-lipped Flappy Bird was netting its creator – Mr Dong – a tidy USD 50,000 a day in revenue. But it ruffled too many feathers and was recently removed from both Google Play and Apple’s App Store.

Though it’s gone from the official channels, the silliness of Flappy Bird lives on. We’ve seen Squishy Bird, Flappy Doge, and just the other day indie developer Terry Cavanagh showed his appreciation by releasing Maverick Bird.

Better known for the dangerously addictive and fiendishly difficult Super Hexagon, Cavanagh tweaks the Flappy Bird mechanics by adding a dive action. The thumping musical accompaniment is provided by KOZILEK.

Play This: Angry Birds

Angry Birds is old news to some, but for the people who don’t have iPhones and Android devices and felt like pariahs, it’s a good day. You may still be a pariah, but at least you get to waste your life away by hurling bird munitions at pigs, all in the comfort of your web browser. However, there is a caveat – Rovio’s insanely popular puzzle game is currently only playable on Google Chrome.

If you’re using Firefox, don’t worry Chrome looks just like it, except it works faster. Download it from www.google.com/chrome and then get Angry Birds from the Chrome Web Store. And then formulate some good excuses as to why you did no work today.

UPDATE #1: If you’d prefer not to use Google Chrome, then head to http://chrome.angrybirds.com/ in Firefox 4 or Internet Explorer 9.

UPDATE #2: It appears not even a gang of Angry Birds are safe. The Next Web reports that a cheat (Javascript hack) enables you to access all the levels from the beginning.

Drench: The World’s Simplest Flash Game

Dubbed as the “world’s simplest flash game” Drench tasks you turning a board containing a myriad of colours to a single colour within a set number of moves. The premise is a simple one, but the execution may not necessarily be that easy.

When the game starts, the board is filled with random blocks consisting six different colors. Begin at the upper left block, select one of the colours on the right panel to match surrounding blocks. Repeat the process until the whole board is covered with paint of one colour. The first level gives you 30 moves, and in each subsequent level you get one less move.

Enter the ToneMatrix

Andre Michelle, the creator of ToneMatrix describes his lab experiment as a “Simple sinewave synthesizer triggered by an ordinary 16step sequencer.” That’s geek-speak for what is a fun and addictive music maker that sounds awesome no matter what you do.

ToneMatrix comprises a 16×16 grid where each block in the grid represents a specific tone. Click a block to light it up and it starts pulsing a single musical note. Click on another block and you’ve started to make a loop. Create your own patterns or just fool around for a while. It’s a simple concept that can result in some amusing compositions.

Magneboy and the Laws of Attraction

The only reason I would stop playing today’s timewaster is this one – to tell you about it ;-) Created by UK-based game house Nitrome, Magneboy is an sliding-block puzzler where you play as an uber-cute clockwork robot who uses its powers of magnetism to cross chasms, create bridges, and shuffle past various obstacles, ultimately to get to the end of each level.

I don’t think it was designed to be difficult – I managed to get to level 26 without too much trouble. Considering that a dead flea has a better sense of direction than I do, it’s safe to say that the learning curve here isn’t too steep. Great music and a retro pixel art design complete the really cool package that Magneboy is.
