Best Photomicrographs from Nikon Small World

A photomicrograph (or micrograph, or microphotograph) is an image taken through a microscope, and Nikon have been sponsoring the International Small World Competition since 1974, as a means to recognize the efforts of those involved with photography through the light microscope. The competition is open to anyone with an interest in photography through the microscope, professionals and hobbyists alike.

Here are some shots from the 2008 competition.

1st Place – Michael Stringer, Pleurosigma (marine diatoms)

Nikon Small World Competition Winner 2008

This image was one of a series Mr. Stringer created to illustrate a talk to a camera club on “Photography through the microscope.” His objective was to display diatoms in a modern way using super contrast and careful application of color. Rather than showing all the details, or warts and wrinkles as Mr. Stringer likes to call them, he dressed up the diatoms by manipulating the image and creating this beautiful photomicrograph.

2nd Place – Paul Marshall,  Carbon nanotubes

Nikon Small World Competition 2008 - 2nd Place

Marshall’s image was taken as part of the study of an atypical Carbon Nanotube growth run. Carbon Nanotubes are the latest material of interest and show great promise for the next generation of devices in the field of optical, medical and electronic research. He chose to submit this image to convey the hidden microscopic beauty of science and technology.

The image was created using a Nikon CoolPix E995 and a Nikon SMZ-10 Stereo Microscope. Marshall used this image as the cover of a Christmas card to his students.

3rd Place – Albert Tousson, Convallaria majalis (Lily of the Valley)

Nikon Small World Competition 2008 - 3rd Place

Tousson has been involved in photomicrography for 25 years. As a cell biologist, Tousson works to understand the complex processes that allow cells to metabolize and perpetuate.

Tousson chose to submit this image showing the plant’s tissue organization because the red cell walls and green and yellow starch granules were striking. This image was acquired using laser confocal microscopy with 3D projection as part of a test of a confocal imaging system for optical sectioning and 3D rendering. Tousson hoped the result of the test would be of a quality for submission to the Nikon Small World Competition.

Twingly’s Top 100 Blogs

twinglyTwingly.com, a spam-free blog search engine that currently serves 25 millions search results per month, has compiled a Top 100 list of the most popular blogs today.

Twingly uses a concept of a Blog Rank for their metrics. Akin to Google’s Page Rank service, Blog Rank measures the web prominence of blogs only. The Blog Rank indicates how much influence and importance a particular blog has become.

Twingly can also group by language, so here are the Top 10 English blogs:

10. Perez Hilton
9. Lifehacker
8. ReadWriteWeb
7. The Official Google Blog
6. Mashable!
5. CNN Political Ticker
4. Engadget

Vintage Graphics – Electroshock!

I love vintage graphics especially the one that show the painful electric shocks as a result of silly mistakes.

Little Johhny and the fried weiner.

Blu-ray Movie Review: Resident Evil: Extinction

Here’s a quick-ish history for those uninitiated with the series. The first Resident Evil film tells of an amnesiac heroine Alice as she attempts to escape a secret underground facility belonging to the Umbrella Corporation (a bioengineering pharmaceutical company). The said facility is full of zombies. Resident Evil: Apocalypse is the second in the series and follows Alice, who after escaping the underground Umbrella facility, must band together with other survivors to escape Raccoon City before it gets nuked. The said town is once again full of zombies.

Now in Resident Evil: Extinction Alice is set to fight (if you haven’t figured this out already) even more zombies. An experimental T-Virus created by the Umbrella Corporate has transformed the world’s population into enraged flesh-eating zombies. No city is safe from the zombie hordes. However, two Raccoon City survivors Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) and L.J. (Mike Epps), team up with new survivors Claire (Ali Larter), K-Mart (Spencer Locke), and Nurse Betty (Ashanti). Gathering together a group of survivors, they travel across the Mojave Desert in an armoured convoy looking for supplies, and more importantly, uninfected survivors.

More zombies after the jump.

Blu-ray Review: Underworld: Evolution

As sequels usually do, Underworld: Evolution continues the story about the war between vampires and werewolves (or Lycans as they are called) that was introduced in the first Underworld film. Don’t worry if you haven’t watched the first one as this sequel shows extensive flashbacks to ensure you know what’s going on. How thoughtful.

So in Underworld: Evolution, sexy death-dealer Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and mildly attractive vampire-lycan hybrid Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) are on the run after doing something really bad in the first film. They are being hunted by vampire elder leader Marcus (Tony Curran), who fails to obtain an artifact in Selene’s possession. Recognizing the importance of the said possession, Selene and Michael travel to the hideout of Andreas Tanis, an exiled vampire historian. Tanis tells a rather convoluted tale and refers them to Lorenz Macaro, stating he can help stop Marcus. Lorenz tells his story to the pair but is cut short as Marcus finds and attacks them. People get killed and Marcus boldly says he will become a god and rule a race of hybrids. Marcus then flies away, but Selene and a team of “cleaners” track him down and set the scene for an epic battle that will change the history of the two warring factions…

Blu-ray Review: Monty Python’s Life of Brian

They say a change is as good as a holiday. And Monty Python’s Life of Brian is sure to forever change your biblical view.

This controversial, satirical comedy by the Monty Python team was initially banned in Norway for fear that it may offend peoples’ religious sensibilities. In the neighboring country Sweden the film was marketed as “The film too funny to be shown in Norway.” A town in South Wales also had it banned even though it didn’t have a cinema! With those kinds of credentials, you know you’re in for a great movie.

Leave the Toilet Seat Up

crying childI’ve been trained to leave the toilet seat down, but I now questioning this decision, for good reason I think.

Livescience reports that some British doctors are advising that toilets seats should be left up as heavy wooden and ornamental toilet seat could fall down onto the penises of unsuspecting toddlers.

Doctors who have treated such “penis-crush” injuries offer the following tips:

  • Use toilet seats that fall slowly and with reduced momentum.
  • Heavier toilet seats could be banned in houses with male infants.
  • Households with male infants should consider leaving the toilet seat up after use.
  • Toddlers should be educated to hold the toilet seat up with one hand while urinating.

So there you have it. The first public service announcement from the onelargeprawn blog. Keep those toddler penises safe from harm this festive period ;)

Every Flight on Earth in 72 Seconds

The sex-starved boffins from the the Zurich School of Applied Sciences have compiled a 72-second video simulation showing the flight path of every commercial flight in the world over a 24-hour period. Compiling the data was surprisingly simple as it was readily available on the Internet.

See the video below or go to Youtube.
