Invasive Species: These Trees are Cell Phone Towers

In a series entitled Invasive Species, South African photographer Dillon Marsh didn’t photograph pockets of Eucalyptus trees growing amongst the indigenous forest on the slopes of Table Mountain. Instead he made references to the (badly) disguised cell phone towers that have been dotted around Cape Town.

In 1996, mobile telecomms company Vodacom commissioned two gentlemen, Ivo Branislav Lazic and Aubrey Trevor Thomas, to create a set of materials specifically for the concealment and disguisement of the antennae atop the cell phone masts. The duo created what was supposedly the world’s first cell phone tower to be disguised as a palm tree. In 2009, Marsh tracked and photographed these fake palms and other cell phone towers disguised as coniferous trees as they spread across the city. Have a look at the Invasive Species after the jump.

Waking up isn’t easy at the best of times. For reasons known only to himself, Zach Curd asked his wife to slap him awake for 15 days in a row. While the first few attempts don’t get much of a reaction, Curd later starts to question what’s happening to him, and by day 11 his wife starts seeing the humour in the situation. She recoded the rude awakenings and posted it on YouTube, check it out below.

Gigantic Dinosaur Balls!

YouTube user Maxim Bady certainly has a way with words. On his channel he find special interest videos and adds his distinctive style of commentary on what’s happening in the video.

In an especially excitable episode, Bady waxes lyrical about a man so badass that if he were on the “Snakes on a Plane” movie, it would finish in five seconds. This is a man so epic that he is in possession of gigantic dinosaur balls. What on earth is Bady on about? Have a look at the video below. Beware, there is some colourful language abound.

The Taxonomy of Arse

Arse is a surprisingly versatile word. If you could be arsed, I’m sure you can think of a few choice uses for it. British designer Stephen Wildish takes a closer look at the word, attempting to classify it into groups, from the good, the bad, the ugly, to the downright faecal. The Cat With Hands

Fluffy might have a sickly sweet look on its face, but know that cats has been plotting the downfall of humanity for hundreds of years. They are devious enough but can you imagine what they would get up to if they had hands? It’d be stuff of nightmares.

British filmmaker Robert Morgan explored the scary idea back in 2001. A mixture of live-action and stop-motion animation, The Cat With Hands opens up with an old man recounting the old folk tale of a fingered feline. See what transpires below.

Drug-Induced Self-Portraits by Bryan Lewis Saunders

Some of us are fairly aware how drugs can alter our perception of the world. Artist Bryan Lewis Saunders took this to the extreme in an experiment where he ingested a different drug every day and then drew a picture of himself.

Since 1995 Saunders has been drawing daily self-portraits but it wasn’t until 2001 when he introduced drugs into his system and his art. He believes the 45-day experiment may have caused some slight brain damage and that the drugs made him look really ugly. From the colourful childish influences of marijuana to the calming effects of Ambien to monstrous world of bath salts, have a look at how the different chemicals in the drugs altered Saunders’ perception of self.

H+: Adventures in Transhumanism

Transhumanism (which my spell checker insists is the misspelling of transvestitism) is a movement that seeks to improve the mental and physical characteristics of humans through the liberal use of technology. It is the main subject of a new sci-fi web series that premièred just the other day.

Aptly titled H+, the digital series produced Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects) advances ideas like Project Glass into a future world where human beings are connected to the Internet 24 hours a day via a device planted in their bodies. While some are more than happy to accept the H+ computer into their lives, others are opposed to the technology for the fear of breaches in privacy and the ever looming threat of hackers. It’s not long before a virus outbreak kills millions of users, leaving the remaining humans to fend for themselves in an offline world.

The first two episodes were flighted on August 8th on YouTube, with a new episode due to be added every Wednesday. Have a look at these two H+ episodes after the jump.

This “Farming Simulator” Trailer is Bonkers

Agricultural simulation programs don’t get much love from the mainstream market. Giant Software’s Farming Simulator 2011, for example, doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not popular. Indeed, with the liberal application of recreational drugs, many a fun time can be had in the beautiful countryside. YouTube user SsethTzeentach gives us an example of this in an absurd and hilarious fan-made trailer set to the tune of “Bangarang” by Skrillex. Check out Farming Simulator Mad Skill below.

Demented Disney Characters

While we you may have seen them in all sorts of tight underwear or given the macabre makeover, you’d never think of your beloved Disney characters as pimps, hookers, and flashers. CG Hub user Darko Kreculj (TestosteronMan) does just that, re-imagining the ever so cute creatures in their sinister forms.
