Magnificent “Planet Aurora” Time-Lapse Video by Goran Strand

We love aurorae. So ethereal and majestic, the natural light displays have captured the attention of many a viewer (and photographer).

When a sunspot the size of the Earth produced a coronal mass ejection, Göran Strand a photographer from Sweden happened to be at an ideal place to capture the interaction of Earth’s magnetic field and the solar winds. Over the course of four hours, Strand took 2,464 raw images totalling over 40 GB of data and created a magnificent time-lapse video of the event.

Allons-y! Mickey Mouse Returns to his Roots in “Croissant de Triomphe”

Mickey Mouse started out in cartoon shorts back in 1928 with Disney’s Steamboat Willie. Hundreds of appearances later and we see the affable mouse return to his roots in a brand new series. During the course of the year Disney is going to release 19 comedic animated shorts simply entitled “Mickey Mouse” and the first in the series is Croissant de Triomphe.

Combining the hand-drawn 2D animation style reminiscent of Disney in the early 30s with fancy CGI elements from present day, Croissant de Triomphe shows Mickey battling his way through traffic jams and popular Parisian landmarks on a time-sensitive mission to deliver croissants to Minnie’s café. Watch Croissant de Triomphe below.

The World’s Cutest Frog

Everyone is bleating on about goats at the moment. A compilation of goats screaming like humans sparked the latest craze of splicing goats into music videos. Hilariously, Taylor Swift was the victim of the first goating, and since then the meme has exploded. Mashable compiles its best goat editions here.

Not to be left out of the spotlight, one of the smallest of African frogs is making big noises. South African photographer Dean Boshoff was walking along the sand dunes in Port Nolloth in the Northern Cape when he came across a peculiar sound. It belonged to the Breviceps macrops, the desert rain frog. While the creature is diminutive, with a body that only reaches 6 mm in length, it certainly knows how to make its presence felt, however comical that might sound. Check out Boshoff’s video of nature’s cutest squeaky toy.

Hot, With a Chance of Coronal Rain

Every day is a scorcher on the star at the centre of our solar system. And on some days it even rains.

In mid-July 2012, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured a most beautiful phenomenon that resulted from the combination of solar winds and a solar flare. It’s termed coronal rain.

As the plasma cools and fall back to the surface, the Sun’s magnetic field creates a series of coronal loops that look like they were streams from a sourceless waterfall. The time-lapse video captures a coronal rain shower that lasted 10 hours at temperatures over 49,000 degrees Celsius! See it below.

Gigantic Dinosaur Balls!

YouTube user Maxim Bady certainly has a way with words. On his channel he find special interest videos and adds his distinctive style of commentary on what’s happening in the video.

In an especially excitable episode, Bady waxes lyrical about a man so badass that if he were on the “Snakes on a Plane” movie, it would finish in five seconds. This is a man so epic that he is in possession of gigantic dinosaur balls. What on earth is Bady on about? Have a look at the video below. Beware, there is some colourful language abound.

Rollin’ Safari

Life on the African plains can be treacherous, but the students at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Germany take a light-hearted look at it in their trailers for an upcoming animation and visual effects conference.

In each of the animated shorts for Rollin’ Safari, we see animals like flamingos and zebras in their natural habitat when they’re set upon by predators. But things don’t go according to plan due to some hilarious changes to their physical characteristics. I’d rather not spoil it for you so have a look at the four animated shorts after the jump.

“Grinding the Crack” with Jeb Corliss

It’s probably not the best of titles considering what most people associate the term with, but skydiver Jeb Corliss is certainly good at grinding said cracks. Except in Cape Town, where Table Mountain cracked both his ankles, three toes, and a fibula.

Set to AWOLNATION’s ubiquitous single, Grinding the Crack shows Corliss leaping off a cliff in picturesque Walensee, Switzerland. In his wingsuit Corliss sweeps through the valleys and whizzes dangerously close to the ground. His top speed was clocked at an amazing 196 km/h! Take a look at the exhilarating video below.
