The Long LOST Tarot Cards

Graphic designer Alex Griendling hails from Kentucky and must like me, be pretty much obsessed by the all -consuming and awful brilliance that is LOST.

Alex has artfully created a set of Tarot cards that represents some of the main characters and of course the island. Each card is beautifully and darkly designed in a smoke and mirrors sort of way, and symbolizes each character’s essence and being. For those who aren’t sure what tarot cards have to do with anything, tarot cards were originally used for playing innocent card games, but over the centuries  have taken on a more esoteric and mystical function and are now used to tell fortunes. You can read all about traditional tarot decks and their uses here. As far as what tarot cards have to do with LOST, your guess is as good as mine, but none-the-less they seem to fit perfectly with the freakishly weird mysticism and twisted ideology that envelops possibly the best TV show ever made.

If you haven’t watched a lick of LOST, then (I feel sorry for you LOSER) tread carefully as there may be spoilers. See the full list of LOST tarot cards after the jump.

Vinyl Destination

A friend and gamer Simon (or PsyM0nkey as he is affectionately known) likes, nay, loves vinyl toys. Simon has been keen on the vinyl toy scene since early 2008 and I’ve had a few chats with him about a project close to his heart. I was extremely happy when he told me it was slowly (but surely) being realized, and now I’m delighted to tell you that he has opened up a new online store dedicated to these awesome designer toys.

Calling it Vinyl Destination, Simon not only stocks vinyl toys from local designer KRONK, but a range of toy art from overseas including the latest Dunny Fatale series, the Lunartik in a Tea Cup range, and Joe Ledbetter figures.

To celebrate the store launch, Vinyl Destination is running a competition where you can stand a chance to win some great prizes – a Lunartik Tea Cup signed by Matt J0nes, limited edition Coarse Jaws key-chains, and vouchers for the store. Find the competition details after the jump.

To the MAX: Texo Launches New Service

Credit where credit is due. My mom once told me that, right after she walloped me for throwing a rock at my older brother. It’s not like he did anything wrong, I just felt like throwing something at someone and he was close. I was like that but I’m better now in case you’re wondering ;-)

But it is not of bad things that I write to you today, quite the opposite. In late 2008, I decided to start my own blog and needed to find a hosting company that the blog would call home. I happened upon local Cape Town company, Texo. I guess I am lucky that I didn’t have gone through a series of hosting companies to eventually find one suitable to my needs. In that respect, I can’t really compare them to others, but I can tell you that the service I received (and still continue to get) from Texo has been absolutely fantastic. I have a talent for breaking things on the blog and throughout the variety of “Arrrgh! I nerfed it. Haaaaaalp!” e-mails that I have exchanged with Texo’s tech magician Steve, he has been nothing but patient, friendly, and helpful. They really do stick to their motto, “Your website means everything to us!”

I owe Steve a big bag of thanks for all his efforts and I think a small way of showing that appreciation is by telling you about the new service that Texo has just launched – WordPress MAX. The Onelargeprawn blog is on it right now and MAX provides the benefits of super-fast, optimized hosting for your WordPress blog at an affordable price. The main advantages that come part of MAX include:

  • Unmetered bandwidth
  • Use of the Akamai Content Distribution Network
  • Access to Texo’s Premium Theme Library

I am particularly happy to see the addition of the theme library – finding a theme to suit one’s blog is not necessarily the easiest thing, and every MAX customer will be able to use any of the professionally-made themes from WooThemes, free of charge.

I have only covered the bare necessities but if you are thinking of starting up a blog and need a host, I thoroughly recommend Texo and their WordPress MAX offering. If you’d like to read more about it, visit Texo for further details.

Incidentally Onelargeprawn is a Texo affiliate so if you would like to purchase hosting from them, please do use our affiliate link. In time we’ll have enough money to buy quality beers and breath mints. Thanks ever so much.

The Darksiders Competition Winners

Our Darksiders competition has finally come to an end. In case you missed the action, we started off the competition asking people to toss a turtle as far as they could. Many productive work hours were lost in the process, and in the short space of two days, some of the entrants had klapped the game so hard that they surpassed the theoretical maximum score! So an update to the competition was required, and we went into a sudden death round, where a score over 10 million guaranteed the entrant a place in the next round.

Six persistent entrants made it into the sudden death round and we asked them to play one of my favourite indie games from last year, Adam Atomic’s Canabalt. They had 24 hours to submit their scores. That time has expired and we have now arrived at the official winners announcement. Find it after the jump.

PS3 Cape Town LAN 7

They say times flies when you have deadlines. The same can be said when you’re playing games. Good friend and Guitar Hero fiend Marlon emailed me about a console gaming party happening in fair Cape Town. I am told that the party was a great success last year, and in 2010 PS3 Cape Town LAN *7* aims to bring more gamers together, be it to just hang out and chat or to compete for some super-awesome prizes.

PS3 Cape Town LAN *7* starts on March 6th at The Box in Claremont, and entrance is a paltry R10. You don’t specifically need to have a PS3 to attend, it is open to all gamers from any platform ;-)

Find the full details after the jump or check out the event on that thing called Facebook. You can also follow the organizers, on Twitter.

Darksiders Competition: An Important Update

Note: This competition has ended.

Gamers, sometimes they are like bulls in a china shop. Two days into our Darksiders competition, and two very persistent (read: crazy) people have surpassed the theoretical maximum high score for the flash game we selected for the competition. That completely blindsided us ad we hadn’t expected such dedication so early in the proceedings. Needless to say, there is only one PS3 copy of Darksiders up for grabs, so we have had to make an adjustment to the competition. If you have entered, please take a look at the update after the jump.

Play “Toss the Turtle” and Win Darksiders!

Note: This competition has ended.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing Darksiders (read our review here) and in our first competition in 2010, we want you to experience that feeling too. Thanks to our sponsors, SterKinekor, we’re giving away a copy of Darksiders for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, and a Darksiders-branded t-shirt to go with each copy.

Instead of the usual lucky draw type of competition, we’re trying to keep things a little different here at Onelargeprawn. Based on the popularity of our play-a-game-to-win-a-game idea last year with our Boxhead competition, we’re going to ask you to do something heinous…to a turtle. You might go to hell for it, but I’d like to think the end justifies the means. ;-)

So what do you have to do? Find out after the jump.

A Look Back at 2009

This is it – the last post of 2009. Time flies like an arrow (and fruit flies like a banana) and this year really has raced by. On one hand I’m happy to see 2009 draw to a close, it’s been a bit of a rubbish year, but on the other hand there were some great moments and I’m sad to see those go.

It’s that time of year when bloggers around the world review the year and recap their favorite stories of 2009. I’m lucky if I can remember what happened last month but thank the gods  the Internet has kindly reminded me of highlights of the last 12 months. I have included a few of those moments and my general thoughts about the year after the jump.

Happy Holidays!

Sometimes I feel the same way about disco Christmas as I feel about herpes. You may have noticed the absence of Christmas related posts here at Onelargeprawn, and that’s because I have left it til the last moment (much like my present shopping).

We have spent the afternoon hurriedly baking for impending feast – for a novice baker, I think the first batch of chocolate and vanilla swirly cookies we made earlier looks quite nice. I think we’ll have a great time tomorrow and wanted to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. If you don’t celebrate Christmas, then here’s hoping you have a relaxing holiday; if you aren’t on holiday then please accept my condolences.

We’re taking a couple of days break from the blog but whatever you have planned, please be safe as there are sure to be lots more drunken revelers about during the festive season. We’d be very sad if anything bad were to happen to our readers, you bring in the advertising money. I’m kidding, what advertising money? ;-)

Happy holidays!

The Assassin’s Creed II Crossword Puzzle Winners!

Assassin’s Creed II recently picked up the Best Action Adventure Game accolade in Spike TV’s Video Game Awards, and a week ago, we gave you the chance of winning a copy of it on the console of your choice. You were tasked with solving our crossword puzzle and then decoding the anagram that was formed by specially marked letters on the puzzle. The answer we were looking for was LINEAGE, which not only deals with genealogy, but is conveniently the name of the 3-part story that serves as a prequel to Assassin’s Creed II.

The first PS3 entry arrived within 21 minutes of the competition being posted, with the Xbox 360 entry arriving but a minute later. For their quick work these lads get an extra two entries into our draw. We had another good turn out so a big thanks to all that entered but the most important mystery is yet to be solved – who snagged the prizes? Could you be one of the winners? Well hit the jump to find out.
