Onelargeprawn Wishes You A Happy New Year!

2010 has whizzed on by hasn’t it? We couldn’t be happier about that. It’s been a year fraught with tragedy and stressful times. On the whole it’s been terrible, tiring, and sad. If you have been through some depressing times too, we empathize and it is our hope that the universe hears our pleas to make things in 2011 just a little easier to bear. If the past year has been a roaring success for you, then we hope that it carries on in 2011 and extends to all facets of your life.

Whatever your aspirations may be, it is our sincerest wish that you have a very very happy, prosperous, and safe 2011. Peace, love, and double rainbows to you all!

Happy Holidays!

Hello from cubicle land! As you read this message, know that I am shackled to my desk and hardly working working hard.

I just wanted to take a little moment to wish you dear reader, a very happy holiday season. If you celebrate Xmas, have a fantastic time tomorrow with your family and friends; if you’re on vacation, enjoy the well-earned rest, and if you’re going to be working during the last week of this year, then please try not to kill anyone. So says this kid with a grenade.

There are bound to be more drunken revelers stumbling out in the streets and roaring downs the roads during this time (like this chap, who was 32 times over the legal limit!). Whatever you have planned for this festive season, please do take care.

Have fun and happy holidays from us here at Onelargeprawn.

Onelargeprawn Turns Two!

If there is one decent trait about me, I’d like to think it is that I am consistent. You can depend on me to perpetually bore Lucy Furr about all things Android and to be continually grumpy with work colleagues. I’m also consistent when it comes to forgetting things.

Last year, on this very same date, I thought this humble blog turned one, only to find out it had happen the day before. As expected, I’ve done it again. Onelargeprawn turned two, yesterday. It’s been a pretty tough year and I haven’t always been able to blog as much as I would have liked. A few of our friends offered to help out here and there so I’d like to thank contributors Macross, Easy, Cloud_Ratha, and GoDsGiMp for taking the time to create fantastic content for us. And of course, a hearty thanks go out to you, dear reader, for visiting, interacting with us in the comments, and sharing our content on Twitter and Facebook. It’s your support that keeps the blog running – please click the Google Ads if you get a chance, it pays for the beers and breath mints we love so very much.

Aside from the blog, a very special pet of ours is celebrating her very first birthday today, our most wonderful and zany whippet, Panya. She has been through quite a bit this year and it’s been mostly my shoes and video game controllers. For her birthday, she asked us to make her a party hat and take a photo of her. We obliged, and couldn’t help but share it with you.

And here is our fox terrier cross, Mina, looking decidedly miserable in her party hat.

On behalf of Panya, Mina and all of us at Onelargeprawn we’d like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support these last two years – things just wouldn’t be same without you. Happy holidays to those of you en vacance already, good luck with the Christmas shopping ’cause you’ll need it – the malls are crazy already, and if you’re working through the holidays we feel your pain.

:rainbow: Double Rainbows for you all! :rainbow:

PS: If you’ve visited the blog before you may have seen Panya in episodes of Who Let The Dogs Out. In case you hadn’t, you can find a few of my favourite shots of her after the jump.

The Minkster Competition Winner!

A week has come and gone so quickly and we’re at the end of another Onelargeprawn competition. Super awesome Capetonian graphic designer Alex Seaton created a sliding tile puzzle especially for our competition and to stand a chance of winning one of her cute Minkster flash drives, we asked you to solve that puzzle in the fastest time possible. We tracked these times on a high scores table and after the dust settled, a patient and motivated competitor placed first (and second, and third, and fourth!).

Congratulations go to Donald whose top ranking time wins him a Minkster of his choice. Like all of them in the series, his Minkster includes a wallpaper and icons, a puzzle game, and a bonus paper toy that he can assemble at his desk. Donald, we’ll be in touch shortly to get your delivery details. Hard luck to the other entrants, but we’re going to try our best to host more competitions for you to enter soon.

Once again, a big thanks to Alex at Minky for putting up the prize and creating the flash game for us. If you’d like to buy a Minkster, please call (021) 558 1251 or visit Minky for further information.

Solve a Puzzle, Win a Minkster!

NOTE: This competition has ended.

Did you know that the preliminary USB flash drives sold in late 2000 could only store up to 8 MB of data? We’ve come a long way since then with newer, fancier  flash drives being able to hold hundreds of GBs of erotic art personal stuff and allow a bazillion writes to the drive (OK, I lied. It’s only a million.) The design of these devices has changed too and miniaturization has resulted in them being incorporated into everyday items like pens and watches. We’re far more interested in the creative aspect though and have seen a fair share of unusual flash drives. My personal favourite is the humping dog but I’m a touch peculiar.

Keeping with the theme of creative flash drives, we stumbled onto the works of a lovely Cape Town-based graphic designer. Alex Seaton is the creator of Minky, a playful range of designer products and Minksters is her series of super cute USB flash drives. Each 4GB Minkster includes a wallpaper and icons, a puzzle game, and a bonus paper toy that you can make for your desk. There are six Minksters in the series and they come in a range of vibrant colours to liven up your workspace.

We’re giving you the chance to win a Minkster of your choice. This competition is a little different to our last one in that we’re not letting random chance decide the outcome. Your fate is most certainly in your hands this time. We want you to solve a puzzle, a shuffle puzzle in fact. Alex has created the puzzle and a scoreboard specifically for us and all you have to do to win the prize is to top the table at the end of the competition. Have you got what it takes, playa? Find the full competition details after the jump.

The Springleap T-shirt Winners!

A week has come and gone and with it brings the close of our latest t-shirt giveaway. To stand a chance of winning a t-shirt from the Springleap shop, we asked you to visit the Springleap shop and choose the t-shirt you’d like to win. As we mentioned before, nothing makes us happier than the sight of you having your cake and eating it too.

We had a great amount of interest in this competition. Our sponsors Springleap and its owner Eran Eyal helped to spread it on Twitter, as did a couple of our friends and their friends, so a big thanks to all for getting the word out. And of course, thanks to all of the entrants for sending in their choices. The Randomizer has done its thing and we’re hoping to make Monday a little happier for five lucky people. Could you be one of the winners? Find out after the jump.

Win Funky-Fresh T-shirts From Springleap!

NOTE: This competition has ended.

It’s been an absolute age since we last had a competition here on the blog. Summer is just around the corner and we know the importance of looking crispy. T-shirts are a warm-weather basic that can take your image from zero to hero. In the last 150 years t-shirts have undergone an impressive metamorphosis from utilitarian mens undergarments to one of the most popular, fashionable items of clothing in your wardrobe.

From 19th-century stevedores working on the docks to rugged cowboys out on the range to armed forces in the heat of battle, t-shirts saw their first use as practical undergarments but it wasn’t until the early 50s when actors like Marlon Brando and James Dean turned them into something that every man and woman wanted to be seen in. We here at Onelargeprawn want to fulfill your earthly desires to look cool and are giving you the chance to win t-shirts from funky-fresh online apparel retailer, Springleap.

Springleap is not just an online purveyor of superb t-shirts, it also provides a platform where passionate designers can showcase their work – in the form of t-shirt designs. It’s a win-win situation for everyone including you because…

…we’ve got FIVE Springleap t-shirts to give away, one for each of the five lucky entrants that we’ll pick at the end of the competition. In a “have your cake and eat it” kind of fashion, we’d like you to choose your favourite t-shirt available in the Springleap shop and if you’re one of the winners you’ll get the t-shirt you wanted. Sounds pretty simple no? It is, and if you’re keen to be on winning ways, find the full competition details after the jump.

Whes ma sammich bech!?

I always love a good laugh and here’s one for this dreary Friday.

What is it with guys and the abuse that they hand down to noobs and women, in online gaming. I have been on the receiving end of these, being a male and a noob, but women get the worst of it.

Here’s one for the ladies (if OLP has any female-gamer readers) and the guys who need a good laugh.

Twitter Avatars by Ape Lad

If you’re on Twitter, you’re no doubt seen the bird and acquainted yourself with the fail whale. And chances are you might appreciate the cute avatars from Adam Koford, a story artist who works for Disney Interactive.

Known as Ape Lad on Flickr, Koford has not only created avatars of characters from cartoons, comic books, TV, and film but limited the shape of the avatars to resemble that of the default Twitter bird.
