Sucker Punch: The Trenches

Zack Synder’s steampunk sci-fi flick, Sucker Punch, will see an imminent release in many major countries except South Africa (we see an April 8th release). And this harrowing short may help pass the time as we count the 23 days it will take to arrive at our local cinemas.

Created by Ben Hibon, the story tells the tale of a WWII soldier from his death to his re-animation as one of the Helghan-esque zombies that the Sucker Punch team will have to mangle and mutilate on their road to freedom. The short explores the sense of loss during the soldier’s untimely transformation. Check out The Trenches below.

Arnold the Musical

I love Arnie. The man is a legend and holds a special place in my heart, for a kid growing up in the eighties. His movies are iconic, some of them could be forgotten (The Sixth Day & End of Days), but the rest are epic. The flowing course of busting heads, dismembering baddies and thick Austrian one-liners were a staple and was like watching a musical. How cool would it be if someone did put Arnie’s bloody mayhem to music? The brothers Jon and Al Kaplan have done just that, take a look.

And see more after the jump.

Shaun of the Dead Island

Zombies are everywhere. When they’re not roaming the countrysides of 19th-century England, they all up in your favourite movies and video games. Their latest assault comes in the form of the game, Dead Island, which has wowed netizens with its most incredibly cinematic trailer (more on that later). That trailer has come to the attention of  musician Dan Bull who gives us a double tap of zombie goodness by mashing the sounds and mechanics of Dead Island with the visuals of classic zombie comedy, Shaun of the Dead. Check out Shaun of the Dead Island below.

If you’ve missed out on the Dead Island news thus far our writer NiteFenix has written a little preview. See that after the jump.

Red Bull: The Art of Flight

Flight is just not for the birds. Airplanes do it too, so do sky divers, and BASE jumpers like it as well. And according to Red Bull, snowboarders are big proponents of it too. The energy-in-a-can company has joined forces with Quicksilver to create a movie that follows a bunch of powder-obsessed sportsmen madmen as they travel the world and take their passion for snowboarding to greater heights.

The film is called The Art of Flight and this is the official trailer. It’s snow porn at its finest, enjoy.

The Art of Flight is set to release in September of this year.

X-Men First Class

After the disaster that was X-Men: The Last Stand, producers immediately got to work on a now staple reboot. Fans lambasted the third episode and Hollywood makes money off fanboys so it was a definite no-brainer.

And here’s the result. The film, set during the 1960s, will focus on the relationship between Professor X and Magneto and the origin of their groups, the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. The film stars James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. It also stars Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, the antagonist of the movie. It releases on 3 June 2011, even in South Africa.

Personally I’m tired of the X-Men but take a look and let us know what you think.

Everything is a Remix

In his series of videos entitled Everything is a Remix, Vimeo user Kirby Ferguson takes an interesting look at what a remix is, when it started, how it has pervaded every form or art, and where it’s headed. It’s due to be a four-part series with the first exploring the nature of covers, knock-offs, and sampling in music. His second short film was released last week and explores the use of existing material in the production of films. It’s very enlightening, see the two videos below.

See more information about Ferguson’s project including the references and samples used in the series at Everything is a Remix and follow him on Twitter.

Robbo-Banksy Feud Hits South African Shores

Another day, another “viral” video. I know precious little about graffiti but as any other illegal activity, there is a right and a wrong way of doing things. In 2009, when Banksy was had told another graffiti artist, Robbo, that he hadn’t heard of him, he received a swift klap and told that he would never forget his attacker. This reportedly resulted in Banksy taking a trip down to the Regent’s Canal and having his decorator clean up a Robbo tag that had been there for some 25 years. Robbo replied to the conversation by improving the Banksy piece.

This feud seems to have hit our shores and a bunch of local graffiti artists have opened up a South African chapter of Team Robbo to fight the good fight against Banksy. According to the video Team Robbo SA released a week ago, they planned a cunning ruse to cash in on Bansky’s Oscar-nominated stellar documentary/mockumentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop. As comebacks go, it’s not particularly stinging but seeing as you’re here, you may as well watch it. Incidentally, I’m in the video playing the part of the unsuspecting movie watcher.

If you’re still interested, hit the jump to see the pieces that started this feud.

Sundance Film Festival 11 – Video Games In The Spotlight

It’s that time of the year again. What time you ask? The time of year when aspiring film makers get together at one of North America’s great indie scene movie festivals, the annual Sundance Film Festival to be more precise. Hosted in Salt Lake City, Utah, it’s every hopeful movie-maker’s dream to succeed at this event. Many of today’s biggest Hollywood film makers had their humble beginnings at this prestigious festival, amongst which are Steven Soderbergh and Quinton Tarantino. Some of the movies which gained fame at this festival are The Blair Witch Project, Little Miss Sunshine, Reservoir Dogs, SAW, and Napoleon Dynamite.

From 20 to 31 January 2011 we saw some truly inspiring work come from this popular movie outing, but for the purpose of this article we will look at a topic which is close to our hearts – video games. Yes, the 2011 Sundance Film Festival boasted with quite a few video game-themed projects and even a panel where members of the press (and public) could interact with the writers of such games as Alan Wake and Uncharted.

So it would seem that video games are really in focus for independent film makers. We have collected a trio of video game short films to show what talent we can expect from the future film-makers of Hollywood. Have a look at them after the jump.

Top Five Movies to Avoid in 2011

Hollywood. It’s been hit and miss over the last few years and it just seems to be releasing more and more poorly thought out or underachieving movies.

In recent years, quite a few movies come to mind that definitely triggered my own gag reflex. Amongst which were titles like Max Payne, Uwe Bol’s Bloodrayne, Far Cry, and Postal, and who can of course forget the original Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat movies.

Then there were the non-game related movies, such as, Gigli (Yes you remember the box-office flop which “starred” Ben Affleck and J-Lo.), Batman & Robin (Or more aptly titled, how Batman came out of the closet.), and then of course the Scary Movie franchise and its spinoffs (Disaster Movie, Epic Movie, etc.)

Now if you’re like me, and you like watching movies in your free time, then you obviously want to watch the best possible quality movies that are out there, and sometimes you are so hyped up by the preview trailers, that these over-hyped movies don’t always deliver in the expected way. Keeping that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the potential flops of 2011 after the jump.
