A Trio of Star Wars PSAs

In the late 70s, when C-3PO and R2-D2 were taking a break from helping the Rebel Alliance fight off the Galactic Empire, they were assisting in bringing awareness to some of the issues that normal Earthlings face.

In this PSA from a galaxy far far away, R2 is sneakingly puffing away on a cigarette in the corner of the control room, when he is caught by 3PO. 3P0 scolds R2 saying smoking is very bad for the lungs and even though they don’t have them, they should set a good example for the humans.

The Future According to Films

The famous physicist Albert Einstein once said, “I never think of the future. It comes soon enough.” Another scientist of sorts, Dr. Emmett Brown, told a pair of teenagers that the future is not written yet, and their is “whatever you make it”.

If you’ve ever wondered what the future would be like if we left it up to the movies, then you’re not alone. London-based designer Michael Hobson has created an infographic timeline that shows the pivotal events in our future, according to films. Unsurprisingly it is a bleak outlook where the sun starts to die off in 2057, we try to ruthlessly pillage unobtanium on Pandora in 2154, and all glory goes to the Hypnotoad in the year 3000. Have a look at Hobson’s lengthy infographic after the jump, but beware, some of Hobson’s plot summaries may contains spoilers.

Man Builds Palm-Mounted Laser Weapon

Zounds! If you ever were to meet Patrick Priebe, you should hope he never pulls the old “Speak to the hand” trick, for concealed in his palm is a portable laser weapon! The Iron Man fanatic who reportedly watches the films each week of the year has created a working version of the repulsor beam that the super hero Tony Stark built.

Priebe’s device is powered by lithium-ion batteries and has the power of a 1,000 milliwatts, which, according to science, is capable of blinding anyone who happens to look into the light, unless they’re wearing safety glasses. It can also set fire to matches. See his laser glove in action below.

He has also fabricated a portable pulse laser gun that weighs 850 grams that fires up to 50 shots on a set of fully-charged lithium-ion batteries. The device took him over 70 hours to build and is capable of piercing thin sheets of metal and burning through plastic. See a video of that after the jump.

Zimmer Time!

Hans Zimmer needs no introduction. The 53-year old German-born film composer, who has been in the business for 34 years now, has delighted us with wonderful scores for some of our most favourite films. Zimmer will return to amaze us in the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”, and will re-unite with Christopher Nolan to work on “The Dark Knight Rises”.

In this music video, YouTube user MovieZoneET creates a mashup of epic scenes from popular movies and TV shows, and sets it to a wonderful piece of Zimmer music — “Time” from the Inception OST.

Star Wars Meets Silent Film

If the 1950s pre-make of Star Wars Episode V contained too much talking for your liking, then you may appreciate this re-edited gem from the good people at “Anachronisme”. They have given Star Wars the silent treatment.

Pew Pew! The Matrix Lobby Scene in A Capella

Matt Mulholland, a Kiwi creator of funny music videos (n shit), has taken the iconic lobby scene from The Matrix and has used his own voice to create a multi-track that replaces the original song and sound effects. It’s a cappella action at its most awesome. Check it out below.

Pulp Fiction Supercut Contains Just the Cussing

A quick look at Wikipedia reveals that a documentary entitled “Fuck” holds the record for the most number of F-bombs dropped in a film – that would be staggering 824 fucks in the space of 93 minutes.

While there were only 265 fucks uttered in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, YouTuber user thecussingchannel picked up a total of 429 swear words in the film, and edited them together into a three-minute supercut. I believe I don’t need to mention that the video may be a teensy bit NSFW.

For an extra dose of cussing, plonk this post in the Samuel L. Jacksonizer.

Neon Movie Posters

Neon signs are wonderful aren’t they? At the height of its popularity in the 40s, neon was used in marquees for many movie theatres, bars, and shops. It seems this type of signage has lost favour in recent times, but MrWhaite is bringing sexy back, albeit in GIF format. The UK designer creates animated neon posters for some classic movies. We Review: X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class launches today country-wide across cinema screens, and I was invited to the preview screening courtesy of Nu-Metro. I also asked a good friend, the owner of Reader’s Den comic shop, to tag along and give me his professional opinion of the film. This, the fifth film in the X-Men movie canon, is set in the 1970s and tells the story of the genesis of the X-Men. Usually, the more sequels there are in a film series, the worse the quality becomes, until it is a writhing, painful mess that is eventually left to rot in a dank, fetid corner, tossed aside with yesteryear’s garbage. However, X-Men is a highly beloved franchise, and First Class is less a sequel than a prequel. How does it stack up to its elders? Read the spoiler-free (as much as is reasonable, anyhow) review after the jump.
