OFFLINE: A Gritty Sci-Fi Short by Matthew Santoro

It’s not been the best week. Aside from my PS3 refusing to read discs, I also had to replace two tyres on the car. We’ve also had, and to some extent are still experiencing DNS issues with the blog – some of our visitors are being greeted with the dreaded “Account Suspended” page, and if you visit via RSS, it seems our feed is broken as well. Please accept our apologies, but ultimately it’s out of our hands. Our ISP seems to have updated its DNS (finally!) but you may have to wait til yours gets its act together.

And now after that terrible intro, have a look at this trailer for a short film by Matthew Santoro, a senior visual effects artist whose work can be seen in big budget flicks such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 300, and The Incredible Hulk.

With virtually no budget, Santoro’s short film, O F F L I N E, is basically a one-man production and took almost two years to make. Santoro directed, edit, animated, and composed the film; he even built the costumes and props, and his actors doubled as crew. The trailer is 3 minutes of sheer sci-fi awesomeness. Check it out.

Santoro is currently in talks to create a feature length film based in the same world.

“Prince of Persia: Sands of Time” Movie Trailer

Like countless other gamers, I loved Ubisoft’s 2003 action-adventure title, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It’s been by far the most enjoyable in the series, although I have a soft spot for the 2008 outing “Prince of Persia” that was based around Zoroastrianism. A few people didn’t care for the cel-shaded graphics but I thought it was visually spectacular.

Anyways, it seems a game adaptation is in the works, and recently the trailer for Prince of Persia: Sands Of Time popped up on the Interwebs. Directed by Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco, Love in the Time of Cholera), the film is to contain a mountain of CGI and occasionally star a few humans; those humans being Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, and Alfred Molina. The plot is thus – a rogue prince who reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess to safeguard an ancient dagger that allow its possessor to rule the world. The villians seek to smite said heroes to gain the relic for themselves. It’s not rocket surgery folks.

Straight out of Ireland comes what could be an unexpected martial arts gem. The Cup of Tears is the directorial debut of Gary Shore and features ancient samurai empires battling it out in a post-apocalyptic future. Need I say more? Probably.

This is the official synopsis.

One night the cup is stolen, setting off a chain of events that threatens civil war amongst the clans. Taro, a gifted samurai, sets out to find the cup and one who can break the spell.

365 Days of Stormtrooper Photos

When stormtroopers aren’t spending time fighting in battles, and not finding the droids they are looking for (even with the help of Google), what do you think they do with their free time?

Star Wars fan and photographer Stéfan Le Dû seeks to answer that question by giving this toys a life of their own and photographing them daily for a whole year. Started on April 3rd 2009, Stéfan’s Stormtroopers 365 project currently contains 285 photos of the troopers generally monkeying about. Have a look at some of the humorous shots after the jump.

The Funniest “One Letter Off” Movies

Ok, perhaps I should give you the full title, “Our list of the 20 funniest #oneletteroffmovies that I put together in 10 minutes without searching Twitter too thoroughly because my eyes are sore and preserving them is quite frankly more important than compiling a silly list”. Anyhoo…

The photoshop gurus at Worth1000 have been doing One Letter Off contests for quite a while now and this past weekend, it seems the meme made it to and had overtaken Twitter. The idea behind #oneletteroffmovies is to re-imagine popular flicks by changing, adding, or removing a letter in their titles, for example Jurassic Park becomes Jurassic Pork (which I am informed is a juicy adult entertainment film). Anyhoo…

Find our list of funniest, possibly vulgar #oneletteroffmovies after the jump.

Timur Bekmambetov’s “Black Lightning” Trailer

You’d think it was the sequel to an upcoming blaxploitation movie, but you’d be wrong. Black Lightning features far less black people, but makes up for it in other ways. Produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Day Watch, Night Watch), Чёрная Молния tells of a Moscow University student who wants to impress a girl but is too poor to afford a fancy car. His luck turns unexpectedly when he is gifted with a rusty old Volga that has a very special ability. Have a look at the trailer below – oddly enough the subtitles seem to show up only when you view the trailer in full-screen mode or watch it directly on YouTube.

Described as “the Russian response to Transformers and Batman,” Black Lightning is directed Alexandr Voitinsky and will appear in Russian theaters on December 31st, 2009.

Update (December 8th): The second trailer is out. There are no subtitles so please feel free to make the dialog up as you go along.

The Expendables: Semper Fight

After the release of a bootleg trailer a month back, a new (extended) promo trailer for “The Expendables” has just surfaced. Penned and directed by Sylvester Stallone, it stars the man himself, along with memorable action heroes Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, and Jet Li.

I was expecting to see gratuitous violence akin to Stallone’s 2008 effort “Rambo” where his actions resulted in 236 lives coming to an end (that’s 2.59 people a minute according to the stats) but I was pleasantly surprised to find what could be the makings of a cheesy ’80s action-thriller. Have a look at the 3-minute trailer below and let us know what you think of it.

Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger are expected to take part. The explosion fest is set to hit U.S. theatres on August 20th, 2010.

[thanks to Macross for the tip]

….and here’s the official trailer (keep an eye out for the cameos).

Hitler: The Nollywood Movie

Oh my. Straight out of Nollywood comes the story of “simple” engineering student George, who falls with the wife of Hitler, a notorious gangster who rules the university campus. With tempers boiling over, the case soon becomes a flesh eaters’ affairs. Lol, wut? Have a look at the trailer.

Celine Dion, Hitler, cannibals, and cheesy sound effects. Don’t know about you, but I’m sold.
