Rambo II: The Musical

Vietnam vet John Rambo is not just a bad-ass killing machine, he also does musicals. In this touching duet his melancholic blubbering is uplifted by Co Bao’s dramatic vocals, telling him that he (is) not expendable.

This spoof was brought to you by Jon and Al Kaplan.

THOR!

I always reserve my opinion on a comic book-to-film transfer only after I have seen the trailer, and FINALLY, Thor is here.

Kenneth Branagh, a strange choice, has brought the Asgaardian god to the screen and from the looks of the trailer, he has stuck to the source material. I honestly didn’t see the thespian actor and director making the cross from Shakespeare to Marvel, but hey if meant Anthony Hopkins playing Odin, so be it. Other notables are Natalie Portman as Jane Foster the love interest and Rene Russo playing Odin’s wife, Frigga.

Small note, this teaser shows a hell of a lot and if you don’t want it spoiled for you, I suggest not clicking play.

THOR stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg, and Colm Feore & most importantly Mjolnir.

Thor will be in theaters in May 2011.

35mm: 35 films in 2 minutes. Can You Guess Them All?

Together with his like-minded friends, German design student Pascal Monaco created a short film that is a tribute to the history of cinema. 35mm is a brilliant little animation that is jam-packed with 35 films, with each reference to the film being stripped down to its most minimal form and lasing only lasting a couple of seconds.

Monaco wants to see how many movies you can find in the two minutes that his short film spans. Have a look at 35mm below.

We only got the obvious ones – Titanic, Jaws, Carrie, Taxi Driver, One Flew over The Cuckoos Nest, Snow White, The Blues Brothers, Star Wars, Terminator, Toy Story, Fight Club, A clockwork Orange, The Great Dictator, Rear Window, Dracula, Apollo 13.

Let us know how you did.

The Birth of a Jedi: A Beautiful Painting in Time-Lapse

As you get older, you tend to lose the sense of awe and freedom you experienced as a child somewhere in mire of despair and cynicism that is adult life. I think artist Robert Burden feels that way, but in his paintings he likes to think back on his childhood days when the action figures he played with captivated his imagination. He says his with his paintings he wants to “renew my faded sense of awe”.

The Birth of a Jedi is an amazing 10ft x 7ft oil on canvas that took him over seven months to complete using action figures as his models. Iconic Star Wars figures adorn the borders of the painting with Luke and his Tauntaun as the centrepiece.

His seven months of effort have been condensed into a 2.42-minute time-lapse video. Check it out below.

Prior to this, Burden spent an inordinate amount of time painting a man-sized Voltron and He-Man’s fighting mount, Battle Cat. See those time-lapse videos after the jump.

Explosive A-Team Remixes

The A-Team may have come and gone in parts of the civilized world. The jibba jabba on Rotten Tomatoes rates Joe Carnahan’s big screen re-imagining/regurgitation at a mediocre 49%. South Africans still have to wait until August 20th to watch Hannibal, Face, B.A. and our local guy Sharlto Copley as the nutter Murdock. To pass away the time, I’m listening to an great compilation of A-Team theme tune remixes.

There are four tracks in the explosive A-Team Remixes package, one for each member of the team. The tracks were created by awesome people with equally awesome names like MSTRKRFT, Rye Rye, Dan the Automator, and Just Blaze. Have a listen to the compilation below.

The Murdock Mix is my favourite. Drop us a comment and let us know which one you liked the most.

Baroque Wars

Just the other day we showed you Greg Peltz’ splendid Victorian era portraits of popular Star Wars characters. If you liked that, then chances are you’d love the illustrations from Swedish artist, Mattias Adolfsson.

In 2007, Adolfsson put pen to paper and re-imagined the Star Wars universe using an artistic style that was common in Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries. Baroque is a style that calls for extravagant and highly decorated pieces with many little intricate shapes. From Han Solo coming under fire from the puritan squad to poor wig-less R2D2, Adolfsson’s portraits are very ornate and imaginative. Once again, Chewbacca comes in as our favourite for having enough hair not to need a wig. See him and the rest of the Star Wars gang after the jump.

Ashley Denton is a man with a plan. The writer/director originally from Johannesburg has wrapped up his latest short film and dropped us a mail to tell us about it. His after-hours project is entitled The Hollow Men and follows the tale of two brothers who are in the last stages of completing a device that can manipulate time. See the teaser below.

The trailer certainly got us interested and we wanted to more about Mr Denton’s take on the popular theme of time-travel. We sent letters, bust some heads, interrogated a badger or two, and eventually got an audience with the man himself. Hit the jump to read his thoughts on the project, the trial and tribulations of being a filmmaker, and the things in store for the future.
