We Review: DeathSpank

A note from prawn1: Gamers are a wonderful bunch aren’t they? The other day I posted on a local PS3 forum that my puppies had nommed on my controller and showed everyone the gruesome images. A Durban gamer under the nick of Cloud_Ratha offered to post some replacement parts to me. I was touched by the fact that a person who I had never met before would do this for me, and to so say thanks, I shared Hothead Games’ latest action-RPG title with him. And as a token of his appreciation for the token of my appreciation he sent us a fantastic review of DeathSpank, which we have just published for your reading pleasure.

We Review: Transformers: War For Cybertron

You know, sometimes I amaze even myself. I don’t know I did it, but I missed any advertising for Transformers: War for Cybertron. I missed the trailer at E3, didn’t notice the full page spread taken out in a local gaming magazine, nor did I catch any ads of TV. It’s not that I don’t like the Transformers but when I was a kid, the GoBots were my bots of choice but sadly they faded into mediocrity with the rise of the Transformers.

Transformers: War for Cybertron (hereby shortened to WFC) wasn’t even on my radar until the good folks at Megarom sent it over to me. I could have easily dismissed it as another money-making movie tie-in, but Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen served that purpose and didn’t do such a great job.

WFC is different. For one thing, it’s not set on Earth so there’s no need for pithy humans who can’t act their way out of a paper bag, also (and more importantly) it’s a really good game. In WFC, developer High Noon Studios has taken the Transformers story back to their home world of Cybertron and explores the origins of an epic war that leads into the events of the 2007 movie. Malevolent Decepticon leader Megatron wants to return Cyberton to his version of a “golden age” and has discovered a new power source that will help him achieve his goals. It is up to the Autobots to prevent this at all costs. The battle lines are drawn and it’s time for you play your part. My review of WFC rolls out after the jump.

We Review: ModNation Racers

Sony’s “Play, Create, Share” initiative started in 2008 with LittleBigPlanet, a puzzle platformer that not only had the player exploring a set of pre-built levels, but allowed enabled them to create levels of their own and share them online with a global community. LBP centered on user-generated content and in February of this year, an astounding two million levels had been created and shared.

2010 rolls on and United Front Games comes out with an ambitious new IP that takes the same “Play, Create, Share” ethos to the wild world of kart racing. I take ModNation Racers to a day at the track and find out if it has the stuff to capture pole position. See my review after the jump.

It seems that the world is currently going through a Prince-mania phase, with the “Prince of Persia” movie doing reasonably well for itself at the box office. So if you were hoping for a movie review, you’re going to be a tad bit on the disappointed end of things. On the other hand, what you ARE reading is a review for the new Prince of Persia video game, subtitled “The Forgotten Sands”. So if you were hoping for one of those, well done! It’s your lucky day! Either way, it’s an entertaining review. If you’re already familiar with the Prince of Persia franchise (as any decent gamer should be), feel free to gloss, bleary-eyed, over the next two or so paragraphs, because what follows is a short history lesson. You’re welcome to stay for the entertaining read, though. It continues after the jump.

We Review: God of War III

My god this review is horribly late. It’s so late that even the fast-talking reviewer Yahtzee famous for his tardiness has gotten his done. I’d tell you it’s worth the wait, but the last time a waitress told me that at an Indian restaurant, my food was far from tasty.

By now, you’ve probably played-finished-loved it so whilst you’re here, feel free to read on and compare notes with us. However, if this is your first time hearing about it, join us as we ride along with the Ghost of Sparta in his quest for vengeance in God of War III.

We Review: Heavy Rain

I must admit when I first heard about Heavy Rain, I was a little dubious about it. I wondered whether it had an identity crisis, not knowing if it wanted to be a video game or a movie, or whether its developers had a sure sense of self in their attempt to bring innovation and a different form of story-telling into the gaming genre?

The “Darksiders” Review

OK, let’s get down to business. In Darksiders by Vigil Games, you play the role of War, one of the biblical “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. You have been mistakenly summoned to Earth where an almighty battle between Heaven and Hell is taking place. Having interfered with something you shouldn’t have, you are summoned to the “headmaster’s office”, given a severe talking to, and stripped of your awesome powers. As a last chance at redemption, you request to be sent back to Earth to find out who was responsible for bringing on the apocalypse prematurely. Darksiders chronicles your journey through god forsaken, scorched lands, ravaged citadels, subterranean lairs, and dusty plains in a quest for answers.

Game Review: Rock Band 2 for Xbox 360

Without further ado, here is Marko’s review of Rock Band 2 for the Xbox 360.

After Rock Band 2 finally arrived on our shores most of the rhythm game nuts couldn’t wait to get their hands on it. Let me tell you…it was worth the wait. Harmonix did an absolutely brilliant job at making Rock Band the most immersive ‘Rock simulator’ that money can buy.

Let me just get right to the juicy part and just say that the song library is just spectacular. It includes everything from Punk rock to Heavy metal and it will satisfy all ages, young and old. Your dad will probably love some songs from the past or your best buddy will like all the famous nu-metal bands that appear in this game. Songs include some of the best artists from all generations such as The Who, System of a Down, Disturbed, AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Judas Priests, and Metallica just to name a few. The feature that takes the cake is the DLC (downloadable content). It’s just packed with great songs. Some legendary songs and some songs that are just awesome to play at a party.

Review: Motorstorm Pacific Rift

The original Motorstorm was the first game I experienced on the PS3, and I played it to death. The graphics were fantastic, and the gameplay, despite being difficult to master at times, appealed to my inner madman.

Not many other racing games (with the notable exception of Burnout Paradise) have made me feel exhilarated and charged up to win as Motorstorm did, and 20 months later, I’m glad to say that the sequel, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, not only re-awakens the old feelings, but cranks them into overdrive.

Brutal off-road racing is back with a vengeance! In Pacific Rift, the festival has moved from the deep canyons and spires of Monument Valley to a previously unexplored island rich in lush forests, crystal-clear waterfalls, pristine beaches, smoking hot volcano fields, and mist-covered mountain peaks.
