Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas is a Zelda-like that has been prominent on mobile devices, but has made the jump from there to the PlayStation Vita (yes! It’s still alive and they still make games for it!) Is it a worthy game in the style of the legendary warrior Link? Or is it doomed to die, tangled in its own morass of bombs and swords?
Warhammer 40,000 games have been going since at least the early 1990s, and most of them have had some manner of strategic bent as a nod to their tabletop wargaming roots. The latest game, Warhammer: Dawn of War III, sees a return to the RTS roots of the original Dawn of War, ditching some of the RPG elements of the prior game. Grab your armour and weapons, and let’s get ready to kick some Ork butt. Or Eldar butt if that’s what you prefer.
Lego City Undercover was a game that first appeared on the Nintendo Wii U way back in 2013. A prequel, The Chase Begins, was made for for the 3DS (which we reviewed over here), and we quite enjoyed the game. I never did get around to playing the original, though; this is the perpetual trouble with being a reviewer: new games keep appearing on the horizon that need coverage, so it’s almost impossible to go back and play older stuff unless, of course, there’s a remaster or rerelease on a newer system. So hooray for those! And with that, let’s get into the review of Lego City Undercover! This review specifically covers the Nintendo Switch version, although much of the review can be generalized out to the PS4, XB1, and Windows versions of the game.
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a full remake of the SNES game, Fire Emblem Gaiden (a Japanese word here meaning “side story”). The game was never localised for the Western market until now, and Intelligent Systems has done a complete overhaul of the game to bring us what was once considered the “black sheep of the Fire Emblem family”. Nintendo has been riding high on Fire Emblem games recently, and they are much beloved by fans, but can a remake of an older game be anything as good as the newer stuff coming out, like, say, Fire Emblem Fates (which we reviewed here)? New video game console hardware is exciting! We’ve written our thoughts about the Nintendo Switch before, but now we actually have our hands on one, and can give you a decent verdict about it.
Way back in 2014, we reviewed Mario Kart 8 on the Nintendo Wii U, rating it one of the best karting games around. The Nintendo Switch has launched, and the new console brings with it an updated version of Mario Kart 8, called Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Naturally, we hauled out our racing gear with some excitement, because who doesn’t love a nice bit of friendly competition?
Mass Effect Andromeda is, without being an out-and-out reboot, essentially a side-reboot of the Mass Effect series. The core series, starring everyone’s favourite Commander, ended on a very definite note with Mass Effect 3, and to be able to get back into the Mass Effect universe, EA has taken us to a whole new galaxy with a new cast and crew to play with. Let’s hit up the Andromeda galaxy for a review of this title.
Some games are more about the experience than about gameplay or graphics or clever music, and Everything happens to be one of these sorts of games. And with no real story to speak of, it also happens to be the kind of thing that’s notoriously difficult to review, but we’re going to try, nonetheless.
Ah, good old bullet hell games. They evolved from more standard shmup games back in the 1990s, and players have been dodging bullets ever since. Most of these games are either side or top scroll, but now we have a bullet hell game with full 360 degree movement and a world to explore. Enter Blue Rider, a twin-stick bullet hell shooter that will test your reflexes and your patience.
The Mario sports games are some of those perennial things that you can count on reappearing every year or so. You may not get every single one of them every year, but you’re guaranteed to see at least one in any given year. It’s with some surprise, then, that we see the release of Mario Sports Superstars, a compilation of five sports games all rolled into one. Go grab the soccer ball, tennis ball, baseball, golf ball, and horse..err…ball, and meet me down at the pitch green court course diamond for the review.
