Timeless Garden: Tells Time, Powered by Mud

It’s estimated that of the 50-million batteries used every year in South Africa, 95% is the non-rechargeable throw-away kind. That make up 2500 tonnes ending up in our landfills, corroding and exposing harmful chemicals into the environment. So it’s always refreshing to find electronic gadgets are designed with green in mind, even if the idea is more symbolic that anything else.

Designed by Francesco Castiglione and Tommaso Ceschi, Timeless Garden is a combination of a house plant and a clock. You plant your favourite herb or grass in the device, and the chemical reaction between the mud used for the plantation and the metal in the device creates enough electricity to sustain the clock. The body of the clock is made from recycled plastic. Too small to be significant, the grass will also extract a tiny amount of carbon from the air and release an equally small amount of oxygen.

War Games: The RC Flying Cockroach

God I love the Japanese. They always create the coolest shit that I’ve always wanted. Ever since I was young, I yearned to harness the power of a thousand flying cockroaches and use them to unleash all hell upon the school bully who took my packet of chips and didn’t even say “Thank you”. Bastard. In any case, the RC Flying Cockroach from Japan gives you control of your very own winged harbinger of death. It operates for up to 30 minutes per charge and comes with a handy roach docking station. It’s priced at USD 59.99 from Gizmine.

Playing with Balls: The Glass Pool Table

Australian company Nottage Design have created an innovative pool table. The G-1 Glass top pool table features a glass top and patented Vitrik playing surface that give resistance to rolling balls, much like playing on the traditional felt. Apparently the surface creates a stunning ‘floating on air’ effect as balls glide smoothly and quietly.

This “fusion of modern styling and latest technology” is not only innovative when it comes to design, but also to the pricing – it’s going for a whopping AU $39,900! Crikey, I think Nottle’s got kangaroos loose in the top paddock, fair dinkum.

Biker’s Revenge

Now this is stroke of (evil) genius.

Created by Matt Braun and Jared Delorenzo, two students at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, the Biker’s Revenge is a pair of handlebar key plugs that will vandalize anyvehicle getting too close to your personal bike space.

Don’t try this on me though. You key my car, I’ll find you, like a bleeding dog in the snow ;)

Ultimate Aero EV: SSC to Build The World’s Fastest Electric Car

The SSC Ultimate Aero made in into the 10 Most Expensive Cars in the World list, and hold’s the production speed record at 256.15mph. Shelby SuperCars are out to make another record, this time for the world’s fastest electric production car, the Ultimate Aero EV. Not only is Ultimate Aero EV claimed to be the world’s fastest electric production car, but one of the fastest charging electric cars in the world, with a 10-minute recharge time. The Ultimate Aero EV will be based on the company’s current Aero model, but the 1183 HP V8 engine will be replaced by an electric powertrain, dubbed the All-Electric Scalable Powertrain, which does all sorts of shit I have no clue about.

The prototypes will be rolling out February 2009. No pricing as of yet, but if you need to know how much it costs, chances are you can’t afford it ;)

Minutuner – A New Generation Clock Design

Minutuner is a alarm clock concept by Antrepo Design Industry that sees the passing of time as a linear flow, much like a progress bar on a media player. The minimalistic design shows the hour boldly on the left hand side and the minutes are shown by a line indicator that travels down the bar. Five colour options are planned (red, yellow, blue, orange or green) and Antrepo are looking for partners to help with production.

Folding The Yoshimoto Cube

Invented by Naoki Yoshimoto in 1971, the Yoshimoto Cube transforms into two stellated rhombic dodecahedrons. These dodecahedrons then fold again as two cubes the same size as the original cube. Say what?
