MyBrute: Fight Me!

Fellow gamer Aftershock9 turned me onto this little gem. MyBrute is a super-cool Flash game that takes up 5 minutes of your day. The way it works is you create a character and fight another person’s character in an arena. You can’t control what your fighter does, their actions are random, and if you happen to choose one with a weapon, they’ll use it to their advantage. So sit back and watch as the fight unfolds.

When you create your fighter, you are allowed 6 initial fights, after which there seems to be a 3-fight cap per day. You can join a clan and if you’ve reached level 10,  you can create your own clan.

You can also challenge friends by typing their name in the arena or visiting their fighter’s profile. You can duke it out with my scrappy fighter at http://onelargeprawn.mybrute.com

ANC vs ID catfight

It’s a jungle out there peeps! Yesterday Prawn posted a hilarious sound bite thingy that compared the South African Presidential race to a horse race. Well this morning I saw something almost as funny on News24.com. Apparently an ANC official from Warmsand, which lies somewhere between the middle of nowhere and the back of beyond, savaged the ear of an ID supporter. Both the ANC official and the ID supporter are women. The election violence has started and it’s with a political catfight! Oh yes Oh yay South African politics are just brilliant this year – they’re a laugh a minute.

Bendito Machine III

Peruvian-born Jossie Malis is an award-winning illustrator and animator who surely thinks out of the box.

His latest animated project, Bendito Machine III features an ancient civilization and their interactions with modern technology. A village elder discovers a television and the tribe is fascinated with the new object, becoming overly-obsessed, and eventually hailing it as a god. One villager sees its evil nature and must find a way to destroy it.

With its minimalist colors and quirky sounds, Bendito Machine III is full of symbolism and certainly one of the best flash animations I’ve seen.

The Most Controversial Films of All Time

Oh the good ol’ under-age days. I remember coaxing one of my older brother’s friends into buying me a ticket for the soft-porn flick Basic Instinct, as I skulked around the corner of the movie house. It was a strictly no-under-18 movie, and perspiration ran down my face as the attendant took the stub from my clammy hands and waved me. Oh yes, I was so excited that I walked straight into a wall of the darkened movie hall, but no matter I was going to see Sharon Stone’s glorious snatch on the big screen! At the time, writer Joe Eszterhas and director Paul Verhoeven pushed the envelope with this controversial film of graphic violence, voyeurism, lesbianism, and gratuitous sex.

Basic Instinct is one of those movies covered in Tim Dirk’s article on the most controversial films of all time. Considering some of the other films in this category, Basic Instinct seems like a Saturday morning episode of Sesame Street. See the 10-part article at Filmsite.org [NFSW].

George, The Drug Dealer’s Dog

That little terror you see is George. Don’t let his fluffy look fool you, George has already bitten three people and two small dogs. He’s usually muzzled when taken to the beach; Considering he used to belong to a drug dealer, George seems to have picked up some dubious habits, including doing a shit anywhere he pleases.

We went out to dinner in Pringle Bay and left George at home. Apparently he’s afraid of the dark, so we had to leave a light on in the house, and set the TV to Turner Classic Movies as that’s his favourite channel. This choice surprised me as most of the dogs I know love the Cartoon Network.

The Big Picture: Mexico’s Drug War

In 2006, Mexican president Felipe Calderón declared war on drug cartels and committed government more resources to stop the violence and stem the flow of drugs. Since then, the government has made some gains, notably arresting “disposal expert” who dissolved over 300 victims for a Tijuana drug cartel. However, there have been heavy losses as well – gun battles, assassinations, and fights between rival cartels have resulted in over 9,500 deaths since December 2006 – over 5,300 killed last year alone.

Space Invaders Street Art

Invader is a street artist who has visited cities around the world pasting up Atar-inspired Space Invader mosaics on monuments, streets, and stores. During such an “Invasion”, he creates a map to where each mosaic can be found and often provides photo evidence of the mosaic.

His project started in 1998 in the city of Paris (the most invaded city – see here) and since then it has spread to 35 other cities in the world, LA, London, Tokyo, Melbourne, and Mombasa to name a few.

Kiev, Ukraine: The Homeless And Their Dogs

How sad is this? This lady lives with a handful of homeless people in an abandoned house in the city of Kiev, Ukraine. She and the homeless people share their house with 70+ stray dogs that the lady cares for. Whilst the lady has a small flat of her own, she chooses to live in the building with no electricity or a heating system because there is enough space for all the dogs.

On the weekends she and a few of the homeless people travel to downtown Kiev to collect money to feed themselves and their dogs. She hopes one days that someone wealthy will see the hardships she’s facing and donate enough money for her to get electricity to the house and to buy enough food.

Going Analogue: Liberia’s Blackboard Blogger

These are the days of our Tweets and WordPress-powered blogs. But in Liberia, a country which has been without constant electricity since the 1990s, bloggers need to think of other ways to get news and opinions across to people. Alfred Sirleaf is one such blogger who uses a simple method to overcome the electricity problems. his “Daily News” is written on a blackboard by the side of a major road in the middle of Monrovia.

He recruits people from the city and around country to report news to him. Not only does he use symbols like army helmets to get information to the illiterate, but he also offers advertising sections (prices vary depending on the location on the blackboard). He also has ideas opening up identical locations in other parts of Monrovia and the country.
