Our Dumb World

Mostly the peeps over at The Onion have the same dark, cynical, and often down right depressing view of our world that I do. Although sometimes, even I, the devil’s handmaiden find their stories a little too on the bitter side and they remind me of that awful stuff my gran used to put on my nails to stop me biting them when I was little.

Yesterday however I found their amusing Our Dumb World Atlas of the Planet Earth, and it rocks. They’ve added their Our Dumb World layer to Google Earth. It features little onion icons, that when clicked on, pop up country profiles and other interesting cultural, political and historical facts. Well I don’t know if I should actually call them facts, as most of them are made up – anyway they’re funny go check it out.

Reach: An Endearing Short Film

Organized by the Festival de Cannes and in its fifth year, the Short Film Corner is a 10-day forum for short filmmakers from around the world to showcase their short films to potential buyers and festival programmers.

Reach is one such short film, and is one of 10 finalists in the National Film Board of Canada’s online competition at this year’s Short Film Corner. Created by Australian animator Luke Randall, Reach tells the story of a tiny robot who wants to experience the outside world but a limitation is holding it back. I don’t think I need to tell you about the symbolism here.

It’s wonderfully animated, check it out.

The films from all 10 finalists are on YouTube. Internet votes will decide the best film, so vote for your favourite. The winner will be announced May 21st, 2009.

Sight Unseen: Photos by Blind Photographers

If there was one disability I wouldn’t want to experience in my life, it would be blindness. I’m deathly frightened about that – not being able to see the world around me and being stick in a seemingly endless black hole It’s depressing predicament to me, but blind people have been able to live everyday lives and in some cases create extraordinary works of art.

Sight Unseen is a new exhibit at the University of California, Riverside and shows the works of the most accomplished blind photographers in the world. Here are a few of my favourites:

Pete Eckert
Electroman

One of Eckert’s techniques involves using a composite body view camera mounted on a tripod. Focusing with notches carved into a focus rail, he throws his studio into total darkness, opens the shutter, and roams the space “painting” his image with light, using flashlights, candles, lasers and other devices.

Bruce Hall
Limpet

Afflicted with numerous eye conditions, Hall retains highly limited sight. For him, cameras and other optical devices are a means of better perceiving the world around him. “It’s beyond being in love with cameras,” he says. “I need cameras.”

Gerardo Nigenda
…Entre lo invisible y lo tangible …llegando a la homeóstasis emocional

Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, the 42-year-old Nigenda calls his images “Fotos cruzados,” or “intersecting photographs.” As he shoots, he stays aware of sounds, memories, and other sensations. Then he uses a Braille writer to punch texts expressing those the things he felt directly into the photo. The work invokes an elegant double blindness: Nigenda needs a sighted person to describe the photo, but the sighted rely on him to read the Braille.

Natalie Portman Gets Trapped Between Two Ferns

Zach Galifianakis is an oddball American comedian who latest show Between Two Ferns involves him “interviewing” various victims guests in between two potted ferns.

In this particular episode he has an uncomfortable chat with actress Natalie Portman and her dog, Whiz. Topics include how difficult it must have been to communicate with Chewbacca during the Star Wars film to whether Portman shaved her vagina for “V for Vendetta” along with her head. Check it out.

That was very uncomfortable. Like waking up naked and finding Ricky Gervais is spooning you. Euch.

The Tarantino Mixtape

Whether you like him or not, Quentin Tarantino has made some knockout movies. And Brooklyn-based video group Eclectic Method has created a 7-minute mashup of your favourite Tarantino flicks. It’s a melting pot of extreme violence, gun play, retro dancing, and the sweet sight of blood spliced together and accompanied by a mix of different tracks featured in his films. The words you’re looking for are “fucking awesome!”

Uncomfortable Plot Summaries

Reading lengthy reviews of your favourite movies and TV shows can be tedious (especially if there are no pictures). Don’t you wish that their plot lines could be condensed into a single sentence? That is the premise behind the game called “Uncomfortable Plot Summaries” which yields some humourous (often cynical) results. Here are some of my favourites:

  • ALIENS: An unplanned pregnancy leads to complications.
  • BATMAN: Wealthy man assaults the mentally ill.
  • DIE HARD: Dysfunctional cop saves marriage by murdering foreign national.
  • KILL BILL: Irresponsible mother wants custody of her child.
  • BLADE RUNNER: Man with no apparent skill stumbles into escaped robots, fails to kill most, fucks one.
  • LORD OF THE RINGS: Midget destroys stolen property.
  • ROCKY: White man beats black man.
  • SUPERBAD: Boys plan date-rape, sleep together.
  • TRANSPORTER: Repressed homosexual kills employers.
  • TERMINATOR: An unplanned pregnancy leads to complications.
  • SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE: Man is betrayed by darker-skinned brother, escapes poverty through blind luck in pursuit of light-skinned woman.
  • TRANSFORMERS: Army lures enormous, hostile aliens into urban area, needlessly killing thousands.
  • CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND: Husband abandons family responsibilities to trespass on military outpost for noisy light show.
  • MEMENTO: Brain damaged people are easy to fuck with, but will eventually kill you.
  • SHOWGIRLS: Women empower themselves through public nudity.
  • LOST: Nothing makes sense.
  • HEROES: With great power comes ridiculous problems.
  • WIZARD OF OZ: What happens over the rainbow, stays over the rainbow.

Shaggy dogs

Just the other day, I found myself a new and surprisingly innocent form of entertainment on the intertubes. They’re called shaggy dog tales, and are usually long involved stories that end with a pointless or plainly absurd punchline. Most of the punchlines are heavy on puns – and y’all know how I love a good pun. My most favourite to date involves some french foreign legionnaires and dessert in the desert, but it’s quite long winded, so here’s one of the shorter shaggy dogs (more of a shaggy puppy I suppose) for your entertainment:

A mother lion and father lion had gone off hunting, and had told their two cubs not to wander away. However, a couple of small wildebeests ambled by, and the young lions could not resist the temptation to try out their own hunting skills. They ran out, chased after the animals, killed them, and started eating them.

Just as the cubs were reaching the end of their meal, the parents appeared in the distance. One of the baby lions turned to the other, and said: “That is the end of the gnus. Here again are the head lions.”

If you liked that one, there are loads more here.

Eminem’s Comeback Single: We Made You

“We Made You” is a hilariously offensive new single from that man Eminem. Having been away from the spotlight for some time (I’m too lazy to google it), his comeback plans seems to include attacking celebrities like bootylicious Kim Kardashian, a portly Jessica Simpson, on-and-off lesbian Lindsay Lohan, and even former US vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. There’s a fair amount of filthy innuendo thrown in as well.

Produced by Dr Dre, “We Made You” is the debut track off Eminem’s upcoming album Relapse. Enjoy.

The Most Terrifying Safety Video Ever

I’ve seen workplace safety in a completely new, vomit-inducing light thanks to this PSA video. This is not a parody, it’s an actual b-grade horror movie workplace safety video filled with pained screams, dismemberment, and bloody death that results from the actions of careless or inattentive employees. Enjoy.
