Darth Vader and the Romantic Subplot

Just a few days ago we featured some cool illustrations of the fearsome Darth Vader. Whilst he may have been an imposing figure and found your lack of faith to be disturbing, Vader was lightweight when it came to flirting with the ladies.

This character flaw can be seen when he falls in love with a female co-worker at a staff briefing. He makes a total hash of it, excuses himself, and ends up in the ladies toilet. Check it out below.

How embarrassing was that?

Shohei Otomo’s Badass Manga Illustrations

Artist Shohei Otomo combines traditional Japanese art with modern style to create some amazing manga illustrations. From geishas in bondage gear to ninjas playing baseball and a fair dose of sex and violence tossed in, Otomo’s work is pretty odd to say the least. As regular commenter Macross would say, “The bomb really did affect them more than they care to admit.

Here’s a small gallery. Click the images to embiggen.

See more of Otomo’s badass illustrations at www.hakuchi.jp [some content NSFW]. Pity it’s all in Japanese, I’d surely like to what he was smoking when he made them.

The Longest Way

On November 9th 2007 (and his 26th birthday) the clean-cut, beardless Christoph Rehage planned to take a little stroll from Beijing, China all the way to his hometown of Hanover, Germany. Whilst he didn’t accomplish the feat on foot, he did spend a year trekking through China. During his journey from Beijing to the town of Urumqi, Rehage walked an astounding 4646 kilometres!

During that time he grew a mighty long beard, and his inspiring time-lapse video The Longest Way chronicles the journey and his hair growth. The Times Online think it could be the best travel video of 2009. Take at look at it below; I would recommend however that you see it in HD at YouTube.

BONUS: If you have the time, MapVivo plots out his route. They currently have 237 days of his trip available for you to browse – on each day you can read his notes and see the photos that he took. Check it out!

Wilkins Coffee Adverts Are Persuasive, Threatening

Despite having an uncle in the furniture business and pricing that is inspired by me, I find product advertisements in South Africa to be a tad bland and uninviting. And in another “they don’t make them like they used to” moment, I found a set of vintage ads that I think are pretty persuasive.

Between 1957 and 1961, a Washington D.C. coffee company commissioned Jim Henson to created a series of  TV commercials to pitch their product. Each commercial was 10 seconds long and featured two puppets named Wilkins and Wontkins. Wilkins pushed the importance of drinking the coffee to Wotkins through physical pain. The commercials are violent, dark, and quite funny. Check it out.

The Terrible Thing of Alpha-9!

Created by Jake Armstrong as his thesis film at the School of Visual Arts, The Terrible Thing of Alpha-9! is a brilliantly-told sci-fi-noir of a bounty hunter who seeks a monster that has become a plague to a tiny planet.

All is not as it seems though as the bounty hunter faces off against the terrible thing. I don’t want to give it away, so check it out below.

DEADLINE: An Awesome Post-it Stop Motion

Bang-yao Liu is a student at the Savannah College of Art and Design and for his senior project, he made this most brilliant (and insanely time-consuming) stop-motion using Post-It notes. He animates a wall of coloured Post-Its around his desk to symbolize his struggles with work stress and deadlines. Liu had this to say:

Where my idea comes from is that every time when I am busy, I feel that I am not fighting with my works, I am fighting with those post-it notes and deadline.

Check out DEADLINE below or watch it in high quality at YouTube.

Okinawa Soba and his Photos from Old Japan

I could easily spend many hours looking through the photostream of Flickr user Okinawa Soba. He has posted hundreds of interesting photos of the 19th and early 20th century life in Japan, China, America, and Africa.  His comments are pretty insightful as well.

Here are three I quickly picked out from old Japan – click to embiggen.

Taken from his SWIMSUIT GIRLS of OLD JAPAN set, this photo is of the popular geisha, Miss Koman.

In 1904, out of thousands of Geisha in the Tokyo area, she was considered by Japanese writer and poet YONE NOGUCHI to be one of the top five in popularity, commanding top price to entertain you, and having legions of adoring fans who could only hope to catch a glimpse of her.

From his PROSTITUTES of Old Japan set, this circa 1890-1900 image shows caged prostitutes and a prospective customer. If the customer finds a prostitute he is interested in, he will light his pipe and pass it through the bars to her. She takes a puff as a sign of acceptance and passes the pipe back through the bars to seal the deal.

Lifted of his SAMURAI, SWORDS, and ARMOR set, this image shows three samurai posing, and yes the one in the middle has a tail. Why? Perhaps he is gay. Apparently the real Samurai held GAY LOVE in high esteem, and encouraged it saying it was considered beneficial for the youth, teaching him virtue, honesty, and the appreciation of beauty.

……..Shudō is the Japanese tradition of age-structured homosexuality prevalent in samurai society from the medieval period until the end of the 19th century. The word is an abbreviation of wakashudō (若衆道), “the way of the young” or more precisely, “the way of young (若 waka) men (衆 shū)”. The “dō” (道) is related to the Chinese word tao, considered to be a structured discipline and body of knowledge, as well as a path to awakening.

Han Solo, P.I.

When I was growing up I wanted to be a private dick – by dick I mean a detective and not a rent boy or someone called Richard. Magnum, P.I. was a role model for me – he lived in a fancy house, drove a Ferrari 308 GTS, had unlimited supplies of beer, and always got the ladies. I dreamed of living a life like but minus the bushy moustache and overflowing chest hair that Magnum had – that was just nasty. But I digress (I seem to do a lot of that don’t I?)

Han Solo, P.I. is another fan-made Star Wars TV intro mashup of the Magnum, P.I. main title sequence but with Harrison Ford as Han Solo. Check it out.

This mashup is pretty remarkable in how closely it follows the original. Watch the side-by-side comparison below.

Flash Game Friday: Minim

I totally forgot about this and I’d feel guilty about it if I didn’t think guilt was an unnecessary feeling ;-) Truth be told, I’ve got inFAMOUS on the brain and can’t wait to get home and play it.But I’m stuck at work for a while and have been pleasantly entertained with number-puzzler Minim.

In Minim you are presented with a molecule made up of number atoms and modifier atoms.  You now need to combine atoms with the same number to minimize the puzzle molecule to a single atom. It’s starts off pretty easy and then dispenses with the niceties. Use the mouse to click and combine atoms, drag atoms, and rotate the molecule.

Play Minim at Kongregate.

Sleeping Around is Sleeping Around

Politics requires some higher brain functions and a relatively good grasp of the English language. Some people would say this person has much of these qualities as a paraplegic has use of their legs.

Listen as Floyd Shivambu, spokesperson for the ANC Youth League tries to explain his concept of sleeping around to 702 Talk Radio DJ, Redi Direko.

Lol. Pwned! Read the full transcript at Blatant.co.za.
