Solve Our Crossword Puzzle & Win Assassin’s Creed II!

NOTE: This competition has ended.

Buoyed by the popularity of our last competition, I wanted to create something equally awesome for this, our latest one. I think it’s quite cool, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Let me break it down for you. It’s the late 15th century, and you are a happy-go-lucky chap in the beautiful city of Florence. It’s pay day and you have joined the lads at the local piazza. Whilst enjoying your drink, you notice a sultry bird a couple of tables across, and you saunter over for look. The conversation starts politely, but quickly turn flirtatious, and before you know it you’re inviting her back to your place for “a cup of tea, and a lie down”.

She has an even better idea – there’s more fun to be had at her place where her equally beautiful sister wants in on the action. There is a slight complication – her house is guarded by the most fiercest dog in all Tuscany, capable of tearing a man limb from limb in mere minutes. However, the uttering the correct password renders the mutt as meek as a lamb. Before you can ask what the password is, she stuffs a parchment into your shirt pocket, and rushes off. Scanning the parchment, you realize it is a puzzle that, once decoded, could result in a night of pleasure…

Considering the title of the post, I’m sure you have worked out that the prize is not a lusty threesome, but something much sweeter. Courtesy of Ubisoft, we’re giving away two copies of the universally acclaimed Assassin’s Creed II* (one for the PS3, and one for Xbox 360) and we’ve thrown in some kit too. To snag one of the prizes, you will need to solve a puzzle of sorts. Find all the details after the jump.

The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon

“It will kill you. Even if it takes the rest of your life.” Director Richard Gale’s comedy/horror short film has a title that is even longer than the tag line it describes.

“The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon” tells the story of everyday man Jack Cucchiaio is who is being stalked by the most relentless murderer of all time. The heinous creature intends on bashing Jack to death…with a spoon!

See the epic 10-minute trailer below or watch it in HD on YouTube – it’s a scream ;-)

Gale’s trailer has been viewed over 1.5 million times and the extended cut of the movie will soon be available on DVD. More info on that at www.richard-gale.com.

BONUS: Did you know that the longest movie title is “Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead Part 2: In Shocking 2-D”? [Source]

Back to Basics: A Collection of Fixed Gear Bikes

Year-end slowdown, my brown ass! I’m the busiest I have even been at the office. I half-considered calling reception with a bomb scare, but apparently one can get arrested for this kind of thing. Who knew?

I also didn’t know what a fixed gear bicycle was until that guy Uno De Waal from 10and5.com explained it to me. A “Fixie” is a bike that has been pared down to its simplest form – devoid of gears, it’s a single-speed bike without a freewheel. Because the pedals are always in motion when it is moving, you cannot coast on a fixie. This could prove problematic to some people (me included) who want to freewheel as much as they can through life.

Why would anyone want such a thing? Apart from being excellent exercise, it’s a far cleaner mode of transport. Oh, and they are pretty to look at. See a small collection of them after the jump.

Emo Super Heroes

What do emo kids use as birth control? Their personalities. Clearly I didn’t write that joke, it’s actually funny. It however shows the extent of my knowledge on all things “emo”.

Now, artist JSalvador wondered what super heroes would be like if they were emo and sketched our their tortured thoughts. Check out his “Super Emo Friends” series after the jump.

Amazing Art by Aesthetic Apparatus

Some months, we went to a screen printing workshop and had a fantastic time. Since then I have been yearning to turn a room in our basement into a workshop. Trouble is, the room is filled to the brim with the crap that can’t fit in the house above it. Also, it’s inhabited by the bane of my existence – FLEAS. Tonnes of fleas. I hate them, in a “fuck off and die” kind of way.

Anyhoo (people still say anyhoo right?), if the workshop became a reality, I wondered what kinds of unoriginal, mindless content I would likely produce. I need guidance and inspiration, and who better to get that from than screen printing gurus Aesthetic Apparatus.

Formed by beer-loving designers Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski, Aesthetic Apparatus has been creating the most awesome hand-printed concert posters and art prints since 1999. But don’t just believe me – have a look at a small selection after the jump.

Michael Paukner And His Esoteric Subjects

I think I am in love. The more time I spend on Michæl Paukner’s Flickr stream, the more I am drawn into his visual style. He creates a selection of posters and infographics that seem marry science and design in the most beautiful ways. He illustrates some heady, complex stuff that I certainly don’t understand, like the Dymaxion Map and the Antikythera mechanism, they’re all so fantastic to look at.

See some of his art after the jump.

I HEART Jaco Haasbroek

We have featured South African artist Jaco Haasbroek once or twice before, and in his latest project, he takes the popular rebus created by Milton Glaser and has some fun with it. It’s cute, clever, and typically Haasbroek.

Have a look at his “I HEART” series after the jump.

VIDEOGIOCO: An Unusual, Violent Stop-Motion Film

VIDEOGIOCO is unusual and violently so. Conceived by Donato Sansone, VIDEOGIOCO combines doodling with stop-motion filming to create something quite unique, and so very odd. It has a killer ending, which also happens to be its beginning. Have a look below.

VIDEOGIOCO means videogame in Italian.

Toshiba’s “Space Chair” Ad Campaign Soars to New Heights

My mind usually switches off during ad breaks on the TV, I don’t want to be reminded for the 20th time that I can save a rand on feminine pads at my local super market. Perhaps if you sent something into space and video-taped it, I may take an interest.

For their Space Chair ad campaign, electronics manufacturer, Toshiba, did just that to advertise their new REGZA SV LCD TV series. Using a helium balloon, they sent a biodegradable chair to the edge of space and filmed the journey with their own ultra-compact HD camera. Have a look at the ad below.

How awesome was that? The tag line was great – “Armchair viewing, redefined” – pretty cool, no? Hit the jump to see the making of video and some trivia about the project.

Note: This competition has ended.

Competition time rolls around again here at Onelargeprawn. This time, it’s a little different. We’ve moved away from the lucky draw model to one that rewards the last man/woman standing. It’s relatively painless, in contrast, you’ll be one dishing out the pain.

We have teamed up with Sean Cooper Games, Crazy Monkey Games, and our local friends Megarom to bring you a competition where you could win a copy of Modern Warfare 2* on the console of your choice (PS3 or Xbox 360) and a MW2-branded wallet.

Sound good? Excellent. Find the full details after the jump.
