People of Walmart: The Rap Anthem

If you missed it some time back, People of Walmart collects user-submitted photos of the cooky, bizarre, and sometimes disturbing menagerie of people that shop at the largest grocery retailer in the United States.

The site has become wildly popular, getting honourable mentions in Time Magazine, The Huffington Post, and CNN. It’s gone so viral that it now has its own rap song. Word? Word. From women who look good in pink to the best set of back tits, rapper JDirty introduces you to the people of Walmart. Enjoy but do note that some language in the video is NSFW.

I wonder if a local “People of Pick n’ Pay” would work? Probably not, when it comes to mentally deficient people with trouble dressing themselves, I think the U.S. has us beat.

Cinema 2009: It’s One Large Montage

2009 certainly saw a surge in movie trailer mashups being posted on the Interwebs. Some very creative people have been slicing and dicing movie footage, and we have posted a couple of those mashups on the blog. The most recent trailer mashup we loved was from YouTube user vadoskincheg who skillfully spliced 50 movie previews together to create one insanely action-filled trailer, Trailer Cut – Volume 1.

Now it seems another movie-loving YouTuber with an equally unpronounceable name – keesvdijkhuizen – has created a tribute to the movies of 2009. One year, 342 movies, and 12 months of hard work have gone into the seven minutes that make up Cinema 2009. Have a look at the montage below.

And if you’re so inclined have a look at Film School Reject’s list of top movies of 2009. I think you’ll be pretty happy with their number one pick ;-)

Let us know your favourite picks from 2009 in the comments below.

The Amazing Serpentine Photos of Guido Mocafico

I got this from Lucy Furr’s twitter (she is known as FurryLuce if you’d like to follow her) and it was too beautiful not to post here. When Lucy and I went to Thailand in 2006, we visited a snake park and it was such a depressing situation seeing these beautiful creatures cooped up in dirty glass boxes; some of the poisonous snakes had bleeding gums, presumably from the frequently milking they were subjected to.

It’s just something painful I remembered when I saw the amazing shots from Italian photographer Guido Mocafico. In his two-part Serpens series, Mocafico photographs snakes in a color-neutral, enclosed space to bring out their hypnotic beauty. The patterns and colours that result are amazing to say the least. You’ll find some of the photos after the jump.

The Trailer to End All Trailers

Waawaweewa! YouTube user vadoskincheg has skillfully spliced 50 movie previews together to create one masterpiece of a trailer. It’s 3 minutes and 51 seconds of relentless, heart-pounding action, accompanied by equally stirring soundtrack. It’s the trailer for the most epic movie never made.

Have a look at Trailer Cut – Volume 1 below or watch it in HD at YouTube.

Awesome Voxel Art by Metin Seven

I am lacking sleep. This morning I nearly used antihistamine cream as toothpaste and Deems remarked that at least my teeth wouldn’t itch. I suppose he has a fair point there. Later on the day, I tried to use my security tag to open a door and found that it just flung wide open – I was about to launch into a diatribe about the company’s lax security measures until I realized that the door led to the men’s toilet.

So I’m still half-asleep and I hope my barometer of awesomness isn’t poked as well, but I do think this is pretty sweet stuff. Dutch designer Metin Seven has created some fantastic illustrations of the voxel kind. A voxel is like a pixel in 3D, and Seven uses them in his character designs and more interestingly to put a 3D spin on classic 2D games. Have a look at some of his pixel illustrations after the jump.

Whizz-Bang! The Iron Man 2 Trailer Has Arrived!

I could go on and on about how lovely Gwyneth Paltrow looked in her business suit in the first Iron Man, or how Terrence Howard gave the performance of his life, but I know you’re only here to see the industrialist playboy, genius engineer, the star of the show.

The first trailer for Iron Man 2 has finally hit the web and you can see it in its whizz-bang glory after the jump.

The Russians Have Hitler’s Skull. Or Do They?

This came out from a comment left on our Nazis in Colour post about Hitler dying in Brazil as a big drug dealer.

Given that my only knowledge of Hitler’s death comes from Wikipedia, I accepted the general notion that he topped himself with his Walther PPK in the Führerbunker on April 30th, 1945. However, after a second of Googling, an interesting article turned up.

A year after Hitler’s death, fragments of his skull fragments dug up by Russian forces, and ABC News reports that recently a US archaeologist by the name of Nick Bellantoni visited Moscow to work on those very fragments. He returned to the United States with a sample from the skull and a sample of blood from the sofa on which Hitler is said to have committed suicide.

hitler_skullAfter doing some complex DNA tests on the bone sample, Bellantoni concluded that the it wasn’t as robust as a male bone tends to be, and that it corresponded to a woman between the ages of 20 and 40. This startling discovery has been refuted by Vasily Khristoforov, the director of Russia’s FSB intelligence service archives who insists bones are definitely Hitler’s; the vice president of the Russian state archive, Vladimir Kozlov, however is not so sure, saying “No one claimed that was Hitler’s skull.”

Did the Führer pull a fast one and escape death? Read the full article and let us know what you think.

Oh, and in other news, Hayibo.com reports that terrorist extraordinaire Osama bin Laden has been found in KwaZulu-Natal’s upmarket Umhlanga neighbourhood, posing as a woman. Read that article.

Inappropriate Soundtracks

After the fokken wind bitch-slapped the wooden fencing on our wall on Sunday (photo HERE) and some douche driving into our parked car yesterday, God knows I could do with some lulz today.

Inappropriate Soundtracks takes clips from popular movies and edits new music over the original scenes. The results are often quite hilarious. Have a look at some of them after the jump.

Continuity: An Awesome Tile-Sliding Platformer

I was on Twitter and picked up a vibe that @NickdeBruyne from LazyGamer may be getting bored, something that was realized when tweeted this: “OK, I’m really bored now.”

So I made it my goal this afternoon to keep him occupied, a task that didn’t prove too difficult. I suggest that Nick try Continuity, an awesome tile-sliding puzzle platformer from Ragtime Games, a bunch of university students from Gothenburg, Sweden. Here are Nick’s responses.
