You may recall Your Beautiful Eyes, a series by Armenian photographer Suren Manvelyan that took a closer look at the human eye. He carries on with this theme in his latest set of photos, this time his subject range includes fish cats, horses, and crocodiles. Whenever I’ve walked on the slopes of Table Mountain, the nicer mountain bikers are generally the ones going uphill. They’re far too out of breath to be of any danger to me. However, the ones coming down the hill seldom announce their presence. They scream down the rocky roads, leaving a trail of dust and angered walkers in their wake.
You’d think a mountain biker on the flat savanna wouldn’t be of much nuisance to anyone. Unfortunately for mountain biker, Evan van der Spuy of Team Jeep South Africa, that wasn’t the case. During a race at the Albert Falls Dam, van der Spuy rode past a grazing Red Hartebeest who reacted to the cyclist’s presence. And by “react”, I mean “charge the mountain biker and klap him something fierce”.

Time-lapse videos are so calming aren’t they? And it seems the state of Arizona provides some wonderful vistas for time-lapse photographers.
Dan Eckert captured the beauty of Arizona in his “hyper lapse” video and now cinematographer Dustin Farrell shows off a year’s worth of time-lapse footage that he made in his home state. In Landscapes: Volume One, Farrell captures the majestic landscapes of Arizona and the incredible city of stars above it. It’s absolutely breathtaking. You must see it.
In his second time-lapse video, Farrell travels to Utah and shoots some of the iconic, rugged landscapes there. Landscapes: Volume Two can be seen after the jump.

We Review: rAge 2011
Your favourite gaming reviewer (that’s me, by the by) went to the 2011 rAge expo at the Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg this weekend.
I got a good look at some of the most exciting up and coming games for the next few months, and even got hands on with a few of them, where I was able to kick, punch, hit, and beg my way to the front. Hit the jump to find out what went down at the event.
It’s a city of stars above our heads. The Milky Way is a galaxy that stretches a staggering 600,000 trillion miles from one end to the other. And in this National Geographic TV special, we are taken on a journey through the tumultuous moments in the history of the Milky Way, from the birth of this beautiful spiral galaxy all the way to its eventual death.
One of the images used in the documentary is the 800-million-pixel panorama of the Milky Way created by the Gigagalaxy Zoom project. As grand as the image is, it’s a side-on view of the galaxy that we see and astronomers use all manner of high-tech computer tools to work out what it would like if it were viewed from a bird’s-eye view. In the 19th century America, women were expected to hold up to an ideal that was “True Womanhood.” There were four corner stones of true womanhood — piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity. It was these virtues by which women would be judged, and those who possessed all of them would be assured happiness in life. This idealized version of women was advertised in newspapers, magazines, and somewhere between the years of 1833 and 1842, D. W. Kellogg created a lithograph of a map of a woman’s heart.
Entitled A Map of the Open Country of a Woman’s Heart, the map had love at the centre of a woman’s heart, with a range of mountains that protected it from the dangers of selfishness, fickleness, vanity, and flirtatious behaviour. A sizeable part of the map wass taken up by the love of fashion, where it seems there was even a monument dedicated to it. It certainly painted women as shallow creatures and the subtitle seemed to be a warning to those thinking of travelling the lands. It read, “Exhibiting its internal communications, and the facilities and dangers to Travellers therein.”

Gears of War 3 has been met with universal acclaim, garning an average of 91 on metacritic. The two previous titles in the series have netted near perfect scores too, with the first Gears of War standing out as one of the most epic third person shooters available on a gaming console.
The people who play it love it and recently deviantART held a content, Gears/Artists United, that asked its members to capture the essence of Gears of War in the form of wallpaper.
The first prize was set at USD 10,000, a Gears of War 3 limited edition console, and deviantART swag. The competition ended on September 28th, with 100 semi-finalists having been chosen by deviantART staff. Have a look at some of the fantastic submissions after the jump.
Believe it or not, Toronto-based artist Amy Shackleton uses no paintbrushes to create her landscape paintings. She uses squeezy bottles to apply different colours of paint to her canvas, and harnesses the power of gravity to control the flow of the paint. She rotates the canvas as she pours the paints and also works on the floor, to pool the thicker enamel paint and shape it into the forms that she requires.

The French invasion of Russia of 1812 didn’t quite go according to plan. Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grande Armée of 500,000 were whittled down to a meagre 27,000 in six months and their embarrassed leader beat a hasty retreat to Paris. The Emperor of Russia at the time, Alexander I, was no doubt pleased as punch to have won, and commissioned an Englishman named George Dawe painted 329 portraits of Russian generals who were instrumental in the victory against the French.
The person/people behind Replaceface use Dawe’s portrait paintings in a rather humourous way. They substitute the heads of the Russian military men with those of leading men of another kind — Hollywood actors. The older actors, gentleman such as Alan Rickman, Bill Murray, and Stephen Fry fit the part and look like they could have been generals. Robert Pattinson, on the other hand, looks like a bit of a dick.

Dexter Meets Saul Bass
Illustrator Ty Mattson channels Saul Bass in his alternate openining credits to the smashing Showtime series, Dexter. Mattson had initially created a set of minimalist posters, one for each season of the show, highlighting the pivotal moments from each episode. Showtime was thoroughly impressed with his works and subsequently interviewed Mattson for a bonus feature in the season 5 DVD boxset.
Mattson then turned his focus to making the title sequence. With the help of friends from Fashion Buddha, he used his existing poster artwork to create the opening credits to Dexter as if the show was aired in the 1960s.
