Sounds Fishy: The Misheard Lyrics of O Fortuna

O Fortuna is one of the most popular bits of classical music. Composed in the mid 30s, the performance opens in bombastic style and descends into a whisper as the choir takes over two minutes to complain about how fate sucks.

For those not versed in Latin, the words of O Fortuna could sound like English words sung rather oddly. And with references to tuna, chicken, Troll Face, Me Gusta, and other popular memes this animated version by YouTube user FamishedMammal plays on that fact.

Dogs in Cars

When British photographer Martin Usborne was a child, he was left alone in a car. Although it wasn’t for very long, the experience clearly stayed in his memory. In his photo series, Dogs in Cars, Usborne explores those childhood feelings of fear and loneliness.

Usborne didn’t happen to find and photograph dogs stuck in cars. These aren’t incidental images, the scene was set up and the dogs were placed in the cars. The History of Whistling

In their latest three-minute medley, cdza (short for Collective Cadenza) pays tribute to the art of whistling.

While the other band members, Evan Shinners and Michael Thurber, play the keys and strings, Eric Rivera whistles through 26 songs, starting off in early 1914 with Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts’ popular marching tune. Other highlights along the way include Ennio Morricone’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, The Bangles’ 1986 hit “Walk Like An Egyptian”, and Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”.

Hilarious Pop Culture Reinterpretations of Classic Art

In her series of 54 “pop reinterpretations”, illustrator Hillary White applies acrylic to canvas and re-imagines classic artworks to include characters from popular films, TV shows, cartoons, and comics.

White paints her reinterpretations in the same style as the old masters would have done and amusingly replaces James Whistler’s mother with a teenage mutant ninja turtle, inserts the hulking Voltron into a Monet, and has Big Bird explaining the musculature of Kermit’s arm to the Muppets in oil painting by Rembrandt.

An Enthralling “Celestial Lights” Show

If you’re enthralled by the works of Randy Halverson and Terje Sørgjerd, I think you might take a liking to the latest creation of landscape photographer Ole C. Salomonsen.

Auroras are caused by solar activity, and it is expected that a solar max (the period of greatest solar activity) for our current solar cycle will happen between this year and the next. Noticing an increase in such activity, Salomonsen from Tromsø, Norway pointed his cameras to the aurora-filled skies in the northern parts of this homeland. 150,000 exposures later and he had created a most ethereal time-lapse video, Celestial Lights.

Celestial Lights is Salomonsen’s second video project. His first, In The Land Of The Northern Lights, can be seen after the jump.

Cute “Darth Vader and Son” Illustrations

Imagine what might have happened if Darth Vader hadn’t met the ignominious end that he did in the Star Wars films. Had the Sith lord not turned to the dark side, Luke Skywalker would still have the use of his right hand and more importantly, wouldn’t have lost a father.

Illustrated by comic book artist Jeffrey Brown, Star Wars: Darth Vader and Son is a series of one-panel cartoons that take a look at the lives that the Skywalkers would have led if Darth Vader played an active role in the growth of his son. Watch Luke as he plays backseat driver, hates on his sister, and gets into a fight with Greedo (who pushed first?). Competition Reminder: Win Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 on PC!

This is just a quick reminder of the competition that we’re currently running. Thanks to the kind folks at EA South Africa, we’re giving away Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 for the personal computer! And winning what people are calling the Stars Wars of our generation couldn’t be more simpler than counting 1, 2, 3.
