Muto, A Fantastic Wall-Painted Animation

This is totally awesome/weird/hypnotising. Muto is an animation by Italian graffiti artist BLU and is painted on public walls in Buenos Aires and in Baden (fantoche).

And here’s a small gallery of the frankly very odd things he’s painted on walls in different parts of the world.

EyeBorg: Filmmaker to Put Camera in His Eye

At the age of 13, Rob Spence injured an eye in a shotgun accident. Over the years his eye deteriorated and three years ago he it removed and replacted with a prosthetic one. The 36-year old Canadian filmmaker, with the help of unemployed engineer, Kosta Grammatis, plans to make history with The Eyeborg Project – embedding a video camera and a transmitter in Spence’s prosthetic eye.

Once implemented, Spence will become a lifecaster, recording the world as he sees it. The device won’t connect to his brain so he won’t be a bionic man; it’ll be more like “little brother,” someone who’s watching and recording every move of those in his field of vision.

Add in some more jiggery-pokery, and Spence will be able to see through clothing and cheat at card games ;)

Photograffeur JR Puts His Stamp on Kenyan Slum

Considered the most exciting new “outsider” artist since Banksy, 25-year old Parisian JR is a hybrid photograffeur (which I assume is French for photographer + graffiti artist) who pastes massive black-and-white photographic canvases of eyes and noses and mouths in various urban environments.

His most recent project took him to Kibera, Kenya – on of the largest slums in Africa – where he and 10 unpaid assistants covered 2000 square meters of rooftops with photos of the eyes and faces of the local women. The material used is water resistant to protect the houses in the heavy rain season.

“They don’t understand art just for the love of art. it has to make sense. by helping their roofs to become rainproof, we did made sense and they loved it.”

DIY Toys: Readymechs

Readymech is a project of the FWIS design collective, that makes free, flatpack toys that you can print and build. Readymechs may not be as cool as Dunnies and Munnies but are certainly way cheaper. And I’m all about cheap.

Head over to the Readymech Series, abuse those working printing resources, and get building.

Chess Reinvented: Unique Designs by Renowned Artists

15 internationally renowned artists have designed unique chess sets and boards for an exhibition, “The Art of Chess” at the Reykjavík Art Museum, Iceland. Here are some of the designs:

Damien Hirst

In this somewhat conservative design by Damien Hirst, he casts medicine bottles in silver and glass (complete with engraved labels) on a mirrored glass board. A surgical trolley and two medical stools are included.

Maurizo Cattelan

Based on the concept of good and evil, Maurizo Cattelan’s chess pieces are fabricated in porcelain and represent figures that he both admires and despises. The king on the black side is Adolf Hitler, and Martin Luther King is his equal on the white side. Other notable figures appear as pawns, including Donatella Versace, Rasputin, General Custer, Superman, Mother Teresa, and Sitting Bull.

Jake and Dinos Chapman

Jake and Dinos Chapman have created an amusing board set in a post-apocalyptic time where the game is played by adolescents – the pieces on the white site have blonde-styled haircuts, the black side sport cool afros. The board is inlaid with double-headed skull and crossbones.

Phil Hansen: Strokes of Genius

Phil Hansen isn’t a 100% normal and it shows through his art. He gives pointillism a modern twist.

Bible Intrepretation 2

A mural of the Ku Klux Klan was made by cutting photocopied sections of the bible and arranging them to make the picture.

The Value of Blood

500ml of his blood was used to make this picture of Kim Jong Il on a canvas of 6,000 bandages.

48 Women

Portraits of 48 female murder victims were made and then photocopied 12 000 times. The images were arranged to reveal the man who murdered them, the Green River Killer.

Che

Made by painting the quote “Words that do not match deeds are unimportant”.

Anything to declare? Satirical luggage.

valises

Very clever French designer Pink Wolf has made a series of suitcases that look like they’re carrying illegal items such as guns, knives and even an axe. Carrying one of these will definitely make your plane trip one to remember, unless of course you happen to be lucky enough to deal with that most elusive of creatures – airport security with a brain cell and a sense of humour.

I found this on Neatorama.

The Definitive Guide To Steampunk Gadgets

Steampunk came to prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s and marries modern microchip and LCD technology with mahogany, brass, and steam power from the 19th Victorian era to produce some truly amazing gadgets.

Brass and Marble LCD

A mod by Datamancer this 22″ widescreen LCD has a frame that is solid 1/4-inch brass with the base of brass and black marble. A small brass “cord catch” keep the power and data cords tidy.

Soviet Gas Mask

Created by bob_basset, this Soviet gas mask is made from leather and brass.

The Villanizer

Built by Thunder Eagle Guitars, The Villanizer uses copper piping, an oil gauge, and many gears to capture the Steampunk look.
