Fillion and Daly Take Their Jobs Seriously

When you have as much spare time as I do these days, you tend to spend a lot of it either watching television or roaming Youtube. Most of the time it’s for new teasers of upcoming movies and nonsensical crud that’s posted by the world. Just when I was about to log off and cry myself to sleep, I found a webisode that put a smile on my face. It’s from The Daly Show.

The Daly Show, not to be confused with Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central, stars Tim Daly (Wings, Diner) and his son Sam Daly. It’s essentially a parody of the life of Tim and Sam and the adventures they have.

Tim is also well known for his voice work as Clark Kent/Superman for DC Comics’ animated films and previous TV shows. This particular webisode uses this fact as the basis for its story and stars, in my opinion, the most underused talent of Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle). Nathan, as most fans of the WB animated films know, is the voice of Green Lantern. He is also, most importantly, keeping the Lantern dignified after Ryan Reynolds’ debacle with it. The short also stars Michael Rosenbaum whom we all remember as Lex Luthor in the Smallville series, but does the voice of The Flash along with Daly and Fillion in the Justice League.

I’m not going to write a brief plot as it would spoil it for you, but give it a watch and let us know what you think.

The Simpsons’ “Game of Thrones” Intro

Winter is coming. Literally. It’s getting a tad colder in the southern hemisphere as citizens prepare for the biting cold that is on the way. They’re also waiting for the second season of Game of Thrones to begin, and in tribute to the medieval show, The Simpsons transform their town of Springfield into Westeros, complete with a despotic king as he watches over the kingdom from Burns Landing. Check out The Simpsons’ “Game of Thrones” couch gag below.

Pop Culture Math Equations

Scottish illustrator Matt Cowan explains the origin of some of your favourite characters be they from TV, film, or comic books. Cowan illustrates them in a minimalist way and uses simple arithmetic operations, such as subtracting an eye to create a series of blind super heroes, or adding a cricket bat and a shadowy pharmaceutical company to his Zombie Maths series.

Cowan’s pop culture math equations add up to awesome. See them after the jump.

By the Light of Mother Mustang! It’s the Space Stallions!

If you’re a fan of space westerns like Saber Rider, Bravestarr, and SilverHawks, I think that you’ll appreciate the cheesiness that is Space Stallions.

As a homage to their favourite cartoons from the 80s, The Animation Workshop from Denmark tells the story of Sun Ray and his fellow Space Stallions as they battle the demon of darkness, Destructo. Behold the horsepower, keytars, and cheesy 80s beats!

Batman Characters in the Style of Dr. Seuss

There is a man who lives in a cave.
He is dark and broody and brave.
He wears a funny little hat.
And dresses up like a big bad bat.

If Gotham is in trouble
He’s there on the double.
All around there are nasties and louts.
But taking out the trash
Is what Batman is all about.

This Cute Cartoon Medley Brings Back Fond Memories

Back in the day when life was much simpler, cartoons ruled my life. As much as I liked school, I longed for the time it would end each day so that I could rush home to catch the next episode of Voltron. And then there was Dangermouse, Inspector Gadget, Visionaries, Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, Saber Rider, BraveStarr, She-Ra, Thundersub, …

Artists Jane Lui and Paul Dateh bring back waves of nostalgia in their collaboration, Cartoon Medley, where they play the theme songs from classic cartoons including Inspector Gadget, Duck Takes, and the Animaniacs.

Go Captain Cheadle!

I’m a big fan or Funny or Die as they always seem to have some real funny viral videos. Here’s the latest.

If you’re a child of the 80s, as I am, then you must remember “Captain Planet and the Planeteers”. It was an animated show that attempted to bring climate change and environmental awareness to youngsters. While it did wake kids up to recycling and caring for the planet, it wasn’t very cool and really, you hated the kids and the mullet-wearing Captain.

So when Funny or Die produced Don Cheadle as the new Captain (Cap, we’re assuming was a white guy), we knew it was going to be hilarious. Please be advised the sketch does contain salty language.

Realistic “Futurama” Character Busts

I love Futurama so this comes as good news, everyone. Artist Ray Lin has been hard at work sculpting busts of the cartoon characters as if they existed in real life. Thus far, he has sculpted Turanga Leela, Professor Farnsworth, Nibbler, and the woefully inept Doctor Zoidberg. Have a look at Lin’s creations after the jump.

Mac ‘n’ Cheese

Four students at the Utrecht School of Arts in the Netherlands spent a period of five months reportedly eating a bajillion peanut butter sandwiches. They also made an animated short film in that time. Filmed in the cartoon-like art style of Team Fortress 2, the story revolves around string bean who is on the run from a very bad man. The heart-pounding chase is made trippy through the injection of drugs. Check out Mac ‘n’ Cheese below.
