Wooden Firepower: The Jenga Pistol

Sometimes I push it in a little too far and other times I’m told I need to poke it a little harder. Get your mind out the gutter, we are obviously talking about Jenga here. And woodwork inventor Matthas Wandel is ready to take the game out of the stone ages with the Jenga Pistol. Made of wood, the pistol has a rubber band mechanism that shoots a bolt through the pistol and into the block. Click play to see it in action.

And head to Woodgears for instructions on how to build your own – via I Heart Chaos.

Mega-Mashup: Kutiman Remixes YouTube

This is quite amazing. Incredible really. Israeli funk musician and producer, Kutiman, has collected dozens and dozens of unrelated sounds from YouTube clips and has masterfully mixed them together. The 7-track album Thru-You is the result of his labours.

Watch the slick mega-mashups at Thru-You – via Buzzfeed.

Edit (March 5th): The overwhelming response resulted in site running out of bandwidth. It’s down temporarily. In the meantime, the videos are on YouTube.

Going Crazy With Schizophrenzy

I’ve half a mind to go to that meeting on schizophrenia tonight, but I’d rather spend the time playing Schizophrenzy. In this oddball platformer, you play John K. Facey, a P.I. with a big problem – you’re insane. That and the town mayor is trying to kill you. Oh and you need to find a floating baby wearing a bunny mask. During the game, you’ll experience paranoid hallucinations and delusions that can be kept in check by finding blue pills to keep you “sanity” level topped up.

DIY Toys: Readymechs

Readymech is a project of the FWIS design collective, that makes free, flatpack toys that you can print and build. Readymechs may not be as cool as Dunnies and Munnies but are certainly way cheaper. And I’m all about cheap.

Head over to the Readymech Series, abuse those working printing resources, and get building.

Flash Game Friday: Panda Star

It’s Friday and our flash game choice gives big love to the adorable black-and-white mammals from China. In Panda Star, you play a panda flying through the night sky lighting up stars with your panda-juice. How cool is that?

Press the Space bar to launch your panda, and steer with the Left and Right arrow keys. You’ll lose momentum pretty fast, so keep touching stars to recover your velocity. If you can’t quite make it to the next star, press Space to activate one of your boost packs. There are only three boost packs so use them wisely.

Play Panda Star.

High Flyers: World Record BASE Jump off The Burj Dubai

The Burj Dubai skyscraper under construction is Dubai, tops out at over 800 metres, making it the world’s tallest building. And back in May 2008, in the early hours of the morning, two men stole into the building (at the time it was 650m tall). They casually walked up t0 the 160th floors (it took them 75 minutes to do so) and flung themselves off the building. Robin Schmidt and Jan Bednarz were filmed the first men (Hervé Le Gallou and an unnamed British man) to perform a world record (and highly illegal) BASE jump off the Burj Dubai.

Here’s the video of their crazy feat.

Read the full story at Current – via Laughing Squid.

UPDATE: An official world record BASE jump was carried out in January 2010. Read that story at Word Records Academy.

Chess Reinvented: Unique Designs by Renowned Artists

15 internationally renowned artists have designed unique chess sets and boards for an exhibition, “The Art of Chess” at the Reykjavík Art Museum, Iceland. Here are some of the designs:

Damien Hirst

In this somewhat conservative design by Damien Hirst, he casts medicine bottles in silver and glass (complete with engraved labels) on a mirrored glass board. A surgical trolley and two medical stools are included.

Maurizo Cattelan

Based on the concept of good and evil, Maurizo Cattelan’s chess pieces are fabricated in porcelain and represent figures that he both admires and despises. The king on the black side is Adolf Hitler, and Martin Luther King is his equal on the white side. Other notable figures appear as pawns, including Donatella Versace, Rasputin, General Custer, Superman, Mother Teresa, and Sitting Bull.

Jake and Dinos Chapman

Jake and Dinos Chapman have created an amusing board set in a post-apocalyptic time where the game is played by adolescents – the pieces on the white site have blonde-styled haircuts, the black side sport cool afros. The board is inlaid with double-headed skull and crossbones.

Going Retro-Futuristic with Jumpman

Jumpman is a nostaligc, lo-fi retro platformer featuring a layered level design and game mechanics with a twist. Creator Runhello has this to say:

The thought was to kind of take all the things that have become possible in games in the last 29 years– physics, 45 degree angles, a z axis– and bring the new technology into an early-80s-style platformer while at the same time changing the platformer’s basic nature as little as possible. The hope is to try to make you believe that every 2600-era platformer would have looked like this if only you’d pulled the camera back about 4 feet.

Jumpman is a free download for both Mac and Windows. Get it from Runhello.com – via Boing Boing.
