Amazing Places – Outstanding Museum Designs

People often say it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but with these incredible museum designs, the building is as much a masterpiece as the art inside it.

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in the city of Bilbao, Spain is clad with reflective titanium walls that sparkle in the sun. It is credited with starting the trend of making the building that houses art just as important as the art itself, and has even been called “the greatest building of our time”.

Osaka National Museum of Art

Constructed of titanium-coated steel tubes Osaka’s National Museum of Art resembles a giant metal insect, crouched on the ground with its wings extending into the air. Due to space constraints, most of the museum is underground; the steel frame and glass skylights are all that is visible from street level.

The New Museum on the Bowery

Situated in New York City, USa the New Museum on the Bowery resembles a stack of white baker’s boxes. The building is clad in aluminum mesh to disguise the windows.

Groninger Museum

The funky-fresh Groninger Museum in Groningen, Holland is surrounded by water and connected to the land by a pedestrian bridge. The three pavilions that make up the museum were designed by architects Philippe Starck, Alessandro Mendini and Coop Himmelb(l)au, The look of the museum is derived from the Italian ‘Memphis’ style of architecture.

The Superest

The Superest is a continually running game of My Team, Your Team, where Player 1 draws a character with a power. Player 2 then draws a character whose power cancels the power of that previous character. Rinse. Repeat.

Carlos Alberto’s Wooden Vespa

When I’m not trying to plot their destruction, I don’t usually pay much attention to the chavs and their look-at-me Vespas. But Carlos Alberto’s beautifully hand-crafted wooden Vespa is something else.

Wooden Drawing Tops by Thomas Forsyth

I’m terrible at drawing. Elephants in Thailand can draw better than me. But not any more, British designer Thomas Forsyth came up with an awesome way for me to outdraw those fiendish pachyderms. It is the Drawing Top – with a pen or pencil as the spindle, Forsyth’s wooden drawing tops spin on a sheet of paper creating some unpredictable results.

Pictures of Walls

Not just of walls (that would just be silly), but with stuff written on them.

Without love breath is just a clock ticking. Without breath love is just necrophilia.

Your life is in danger. Do not urinate. Do NOT urinate.

The pavement used to be our garden.

Very short stories

I love reading short stories. I love that the essence of the story is so concentrated – everything is so much more – more gritty, more scary, more romantic, more dramatic, more hilarious – you get the picture. Well the people at One Sentence have taken it up a notch, and they tell a whole story in just one sentence. Pretty darn cool. This is one of my favourites:

After the accident, still in a drunken stupor, he asked the cop how the police got there so fast, to which the officer replied, “You hit MY car.”

    Yama, The Tibetan Skull Camera

So strange, so alluring. This is a pinhole camera, named after Yama, the Tibetan God of Death. The skull that encases the cameras was blessed by a Tibetan Lama, and will be used by designer Wayne Martin Belger for a photo series on the modern incarnation of Southeast Asians deities. I wouldn’t be surprised if Yama had freaky magical powers.

Yama’s eyes are cast from bronze and silver, with a brass pinhole in each eye. Yama is made from aluminium, titanium, copper, brass, bronze steel, silver, gold, mercury with four sapphires, three rubies, turquoise, sand, slood, and nine opals. The switch to open and close the film chamber is located under the jaw.

The 2008 International Aquatic Plant Layout Contest

I have a dark secret. I sent a family of guppies to their grave as I poured the contents of my fish tank into the garden. It was not out of spite, or because I didn’t get the espresso straight, no chaser that I clearly ordered; I just got bored of the fish.

Boredom has no place at the International Aquatic Plant Layout Contest, where aquascapers (apparently that’s a legitimate word) come together to compete in the largest planted aquarium aquascaping contest in the world. For most, it’s not about the money, rather the bragging rights and recognition for their pieces of “living art.”

Here are the top 3 winners from the 2008 contest. Click the images to see them bigger.

World Ranking 1 – Cheng Siu Wai, Honk Kong

World Ranking 2 – Yutaka Kanno, Japan

World Ranking 3 – Hsu Yung Lin, Taiwan

And spare a thought for A.J. Judy Prajintno Putra of Indonesia whose fantastic, super-wide aquascape only got 7th spot. I’d feel a bit cheated if I were him/her.
