Our Favourite Space Images From 2013

Space is big. Really big. It would take a gargantuan trek of 21.24 billion kilometres for you to reach the outer edges of our solar system, and a further 435 sextillion (that’s 10 to the power of 21!) kilometres to reach the furthest region of the observable universe. There is so much to explore but what we’ve seen so far has been incredibly beautiful.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory keeps an extensive catalogue of cosmic images taken by the various spacecraft up in the heavens. Here’s a small selection of our favourites space images taken in 2013.

Reaping for Dummies

The only things certain in life are death and taxes, or so the saying goes. However, in this animated short film, death isn’t such a sure thing as a trainee reaper rolls in to a ghost town to claim the soul of the last inhabitant. Check out what happens in Reaping for Dummies below.

Reaping for Dummies was created by a group of five students as a graduation project for the 3D design and animation course at the Idèfagskolen school in Tønsberg, Norway.

Say Hello to Darcy, the Cutest Hedgehog in the World

While Ze Frank’s rather informative video made you rethink what you knew about hedgehogs, he neglected to mention that they are in fact the cutest things in the world. Case in point: Darcy the Flying Hedgehog.

Instagrammer/hedgehographer Shota Tsukamoto from Tokyo, Japan named his three-year-old hedgehog after D’arcy Wretzky, the former bass player of The Smashing Pumpkins. Despite the prickly origins of her name, Darcy’s most adorable nature is seen in the multitude of quirky scenes that Tsukamoto’s photographs her in. Have a look at some of our favourite photos of Darcy after the jump.

Helmet Cam Captures Base Jumper’s Terrifying Fall

Sometimes base jumping goes well. Daredevil Jeb Corliss recently leapt out a helicopter and flew through a fissure in a mountain at 160 KM/H (See the dagger jump).

Now in the category of “things done less well”, comes a clip from Vimeo user Subterminallyill. The chap jumped off a cliff near Moab, Utah and his helmet cam captured the frightening views as he came into contact with the immovable object. Mercifully the man cheated death but suffered a compression fracture, stitches to the eye and chin, severely sprained hands, and a bruised ego. Check out the Cliff Strike below.
