PS3 Torne

Sony has announced that they will be launching a digital video recorder (DVR) called “Torne”, in Japan this week.

The Torne (similar to the PlayTV DVR in Europe)  connects to your PS3 via a USB cable. It’s got an easy to use interface and the possibility to record shows with a timer function. Shows are recorded to the PS3’s hard drive, or can also be stored on an external hard drive if you don’t have enough space on the internal drive.

Torne will automatically record pre-programmed content in Stand-by Mode, during game play or when using the XMB (XrossMediaBar).

Users can control control the program guide via the DualShock 3 controller.

Finally, users can transfer recorded content to a Memory Stick Pro Duo or Memory Stick Micro to view on the Blu-ray disc application to initiate DVR functionality.

The Torne will retail Japanese consumers ¥9,980 (872 ZAR) and will go on sale this March. There will also be a bundle available which includes a 250GB PS3 and the Torne for ¥42,800 (3736 ZAR). However there is no news on whether this will be released in other countries.

Silence is Golden!

The other day, like every day, I went to the office restroom to do my business. If you’re like me I pray on the way that I will have the entire place to myself. Eighty percent of the time I usually am, but it’s that twenty percent that is filled with hilarity.

How many times have you guys walked, wanting to drop a dookie, seen the stall in use and proceeded to wash your hands like you came in to do that? So as to let the unknown person in the stall, who doesn’t know it’s you, know you didnt come in for a dump. Sitting on the can enjoying a good dump and someone walks in and you have to halt proceedings. And you can’t even let a peep out, as the restrooms have such beautiful acoustics. And no communication whatsoever is allowed. This entails no eye contact, speaking to fellow patrons or using a cellphone. Granted, a nod or grunt of acknowledgement is acceptable, BUT no eye contact!

I still have no idea what the protocol is in the women’s restroom and anyway that place is still a mystery to me. But for all us men, the trip to the little boy’s room is always an adventure that ends with either satisfaction or horrible embarrassment.

Tiger in the buff…..so to speak

Well what do you do when you get caught for numerous infidelities? No man you have photos of yourself, all buff, printed in Vanity Fair.

Apparently Tiger needs some publicity, of the good kind, so his PR machine has allowed photos that were taken in January 2006 to be shown. Guess Woods needs to win back some sort of respect after, the wife tee’d off his head with a 9 iron, and he made a run for it into a tree. So show the guys he’s still a MAN and show the women……well what those other women wanted I guess. See the full image after the jump.

Google Nexus One

Ok I for one love my iPhone. You can keep your Blackberries, Palm Pre’s and Motorola Droids,  iPhone is the winner. And then this happens. The Nexus One from Google of all people.

Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, it’s reported to be the iPhone killer. With a faster processor, better camera, better OS, better everything.  Except for two things. The price and it will not be available in South Africa. This is the worst news in my opinion and makes no sense. The iPhone made it to our shores, why not this? I guess it will be a matter of time till techies jailbreak this as well and make it available for all us third worlders.

You can be my wingman?

Ok, I’ll admit it. I was a Tom Cruise fan back in the day and I loved “Top Gun“. But as I matured and started looking between the lines on things (and Tommy started following aliens from another planet), I didn’t realise that this film was more than just an action flick.

Hadn’t noticed things like Maverick’s angst over his relationship with Charlotte. His very close bond with Goose and those smoldering looks between him and Iceman. And what about those locker room scenes and the oily beach volleyball shenanigan. But I still thought maybe it’s all in my head and people are making something out of nothing. Until I caught my hero, Tarantino, in the 1994 film “Sleep With Me” breaking it down for me.

Makes sense.

The Young Turks

If you’re not catching The Young Turks vlogs, you’re missing out.

The Young Turks is a liberal radio and Internet talk show airing on Sirius Satellite Radio. The name is an allusion to the Young Turk reform movement in the late Ottoman Empire (and the general term, derived from this usage, referring to new progressive movements within older organizations), playing on host Cenk Uygur’s Turkish origins. The Young Turks claims to be the first Internet TV news show. Video of the show is streamed daily on their website and available as a podcast. The show offers exclusive, Internet-only video content via their YouTube channel. The Young Turks offers a paid members-only Postgame Show, an uncensored, Internet-only wrap-up show.

I have to get my daily dose of this show and really enjoy the no BS approach to topics ranging from politics, celeb news, and general crazy occurences in America like this one. A pair of lesbian teachers, from Brooklyn, get caught by the janitor while making out naked in a classroom during assembly. You can’t make stuff like this up.

Invictus

I heard about this film last year some time, and I’ll admit I wasn’t happy. Not about the story, it was Matt Damon being cast as ’95 Bok captain Francois Pienaar. I always cringe when American actors portray South Africans, especially White South Africans as they never get the accent correct and well they don’t look South African. But after watching the trailer for this Clint Eastwood directed film nogal, I think Matt pulled it off.

The film is based on the book Playing The Enemy: Nelson Mandela And The Game That Changed a Nation by John Carlin. Showing the transformation of a nation with the release of Mandela and the Springboks lifting the ’95 Rugby world Cup. It stars Morgan Freeman as President Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar.

It’s set for a December 11th 2009 release in South Africa.

Tiger in the rough

It’s nothing new really. Professional athlete reaches the top his/her, mostly his,  game and decides it’s time to cut loose. And well Tiger Woods did just that. Why did we think he was infallible is beyond me and the media circus going bananas over it is also a bit crazy. Maybe it’s because he was so squeaky clean and did everything right was the problem, either way I’m loving it and cannot get enough of the Tiger jokes.

You know ever since the news broke on Tiger’s indiscretions, I knew it was going to be good material for stand-up comics everywhere. And SNL has never disappointed.  Check out Kenan Thompson as Tiger.

King Of Fighters movie

Ok here’s the thing, I love beat-em up games. Ever since high school, dropping over a hundred rand at the arcades, then fighting at home on the ever-changing video game systems. It was then that I could not wait to see them on the big screen and see my favourite characters duke it out. However what we didn’t realise is that Hollywood really had no clue in how to transfer these games to the big screen.

Street Fighter was a utter failure both financially and critically (just look at Ryu & Ken). Then came Mortal Kombat, and if I’m to be honest it was on the mark, but that Goro fight with Cage was horrible. And they kept on murdering more.

But out of all the major beat-em ups, only one seemed to have been left untouched. And now, unfortunately, they have gotten their grubby hands on it. SNK’s “King Of Fighters” has made it to the big screen. Oh the humanity.

“The King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe by following the surviving members of three legendary fighting clans who are continually whisked away to other dimensions by an evil power,” says insider blog Movieset.

“As the fighters enter each new world they battle that universe’s native defenders, while the force that brought them seeks to find a way to invade and infect our world.”

Just from this sneak preview alone, they have not found a cast that truly encompasses or even looks like the characters. They have messed with the storyline as usual (because audiences of course won’t identify with videogame storylines) and they have the obligatory all American white kid playing the Japanese title role. I sound upset, bitter even and I am. But take a look and tell me I’m wrong.

Internet Killed Television

I came across this vlog on YouTube over a month ago and really took a liking to these two. It’s the 365-day “reality show” vlog series on the lives of Charles Trippy and Alli Speed, a funny, sweet duo that you cannot help but like for some reason. I realise there are many vlogs like this one and probably looks like it’s scripted, with the banter and the chemistry, but they’re that in sync.

It’s just so refreshing to see something funny and sweet on the net nowadays, what with people trying so hard to be noticed that they resort to really awful attempts at it. My only hope is that they keep it real and not sell out to advertisers, as they have become quite popular.

This is my favourite out of the vids, the surprise proposal Charles did. Take a look.
