X-Men First Class

After the disaster that was X-Men: The Last Stand, producers immediately got to work on a now staple reboot. Fans lambasted the third episode and Hollywood makes money off fanboys so it was a definite no-brainer.

And here’s the result. The film, set during the 1960s, will focus on the relationship between Professor X and Magneto and the origin of their groups, the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. The film stars James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. It also stars Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, the antagonist of the movie. It releases on 3 June 2011, even in South Africa.

Personally I’m tired of the X-Men but take a look and let us know what you think.

What’s Tony Stark got there?

Well I was kicking back and watching some movies yesterday. Was watching Iron Man 2 and just for a brief moment, in a couple of scenes, Tony is downing some green muck from a beautiful flask. Kept wondering what the hell it was, is it metal?, is it battery operated? Mental note to self, google after movie.

Amazingly I wasn’t the only one interested in it as it returned a number of hits and some youtube vids. It’s the KOR water hydration vessel.  A beautiful piece of design by RKS, a design house, for KOR founders Eric Barnes & Paul Shustak.

Essentially it is just a water bottle for the iPhone generation, where carrying water on the move has became a necessity and an accessory nowadays. There’s a lot of facts on why this particular bottle is better than the run-of-the-mill ones, which I wont get into, but I love this product…..and so does Tony.

Real Steel

Looks like 2011 is going to be the year of the mechs, with the third installment of Transformers and now Hugh Jackman’s Real Steel.

Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next.

Adapted from a short story “Steel” by Richard Matheson, the author who gave us “I Am Legend” and “What Dreams May Come”. Directed by Shawn Levy who gave us “Date Night” and the “Night at the Museum” films. Not exactly brilliant but we can hope he delivers here. It is set for release on the 7 October 2011.

Here’s the trailer, let us know what you think.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Well it’s out and, as always, the teaser gets you pumped only to be disappointed by the feature. Transformers: Dark of the Moon will be rather different seeing that the writing duo of Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman did not pen this installment. And most importantly high school skank, Megan Fox was not cast. However Shia LeBeouf is :reallypissed:

Set for release on the 1 July 2011.

Watch for yourselves and let us know what you think. I’ll be happy to find out who the Transformer is, that’s shown at the end.

Gonna Cut Loose!

Most of us guys have secrets. Hygiene habits, a man-crush, fetish, and a track/song that nobody else knows we love, that we dance to alone. Mine is “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins. I don’t know what it is about this track but it always makes me wanna dance or tap my feet when I’m with company. So when I came across a movie mashup with this song as the soundtrack I had to share.

So tap your feet or just get up and cut loose to this awesome video.

Whes ma sammich bech!?

I always love a good laugh and here’s one for this dreary Friday.

What is it with guys and the abuse that they hand down to noobs and women, in online gaming. I have been on the receiving end of these, being a male and a noob, but women get the worst of it.

Here’s one for the ladies (if OLP has any female-gamer readers) and the guys who need a good laugh.

“Bless me Father, for I Have Killed!”

Priest is an upcoming 3-D futuristic superhero vampire western horror film loosely based on the manhwa, the Korean name for comics and print cartoons, of the same name. The film is directed by Scott Stewart and stars Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q.

Set 100 years from now after the war between Christians and Satanists, the film is about a Christian warrior priest (Paul Bettany) who disobeys church law by teaming with a young sheriff (Cam Gigandet) and a priestess (Maggie Q) to track down a cult of vampire outlaws that is led by a former Christian and now a Satanic priest, Black Hat, who kidnapped his niece before they brainwash her.

The trailer looks awesome, but then again I thought the same of Jonah Hex and look how poorly that did. Fans of the manhwa (Korean comics) have been critical of the movie as it’s made a departure from the source material. The film is set in an altered Earth, where vampires and humans have fought a war for centuries, but the book jumps from different time periods – from biblical to modern – while the core of the story is set in the Old West. In the books, Ivan Isaacs is portrayed as a priest who turns into a demon-possessed undead creature after he witnesses members of the Vatican kill the woman he loves: his adopted sister. In the film he is a mortal priest/vampire-hunter searching for his niece. The books have him face a multitude of enemies including criminals of the Old West, demons, zombies, unnatural assassins from the Vatican, and fallen or mutant angels. The main antogonist was a fallen angel called Temozarela; there were no vampires in the books. The film’s antagonists, however, are only vampires with a leader who was a priest called Black Hat.

Check out the trailer below.

Priest is set for release in the US on May 13th, 2011.

THOR!

I always reserve my opinion on a comic book-to-film transfer only after I have seen the trailer, and FINALLY, Thor is here.

Kenneth Branagh, a strange choice, has brought the Asgaardian god to the screen and from the looks of the trailer, he has stuck to the source material. I honestly didn’t see the thespian actor and director making the cross from Shakespeare to Marvel, but hey if meant Anthony Hopkins playing Odin, so be it. Other notables are Natalie Portman as Jane Foster the love interest and Rene Russo playing Odin’s wife, Frigga.

Small note, this teaser shows a hell of a lot and if you don’t want it spoiled for you, I suggest not clicking play.

THOR stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg, and Colm Feore & most importantly Mjolnir.

Thor will be in theaters in May 2011.

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth?

If you remember my previous posts here, you would know that I love the beat-em up games of my childhood. And if you were too, you probably could not wait for the eventual crossover to the big screen.

Mortal Kombat was the only one I feel, that crossed over and was relatively faithful to the characters. Yes it was a bit campy and Goro looked awful, but it made me shout “MORTAL KOMBAT!!!” when I left the theatre and tried to dance to the rocking theme track. Then they made that awful sequel and it all went pear-shaped.

A reboot or proper sequel has always been on the cards and has been stuck in developmental hell for some time. And recently test footage of a “reboot” has cropped up on Youtube. It looks like they have taken a completely different approach and its definitely not a sequel, a re-imagining if you will. I don’t know if I like that but, its definitely going in the R-rated direction that it always needed it to be.

Watch it and let us know what you think.

Here are some facts on the clip:

  • The short was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who did the remake of Fame last year. Judging from this short, Kevin is the perfect director for this movie.
  • Jacks is played by Michael Jai White. Michael played Spawn and was in Undisputed II. Michael makes a great Jacks (Jax).
  • Sonya Blade is played by Jeri Ryan, who played Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager.
  • Baraka was played by the very talented Lateef Crowder, who plays the Brazilian fighter in Undisputed III.
  • Scorpion is played by Ian Anthony Dale. Ian plays Kazuya in the upcoming big screen version of Tekken.
  • Johnny Cage was played by up and coming martial arts sensation Matt Mullins.
  • Still working on who played Reptile. Will update when I find out.
  • The fight choreography was done by Larnell Stovall. Larnell did the fight choreography for Undisputed III and is one of the best fight choreographers in the business. You want to see the fights you deserve? Then you fans should DEMAND he be the guy in one charge for this reboot. Click HERE to read the exclusive interview I did with Larnell.
  • I know who might be playing Sub-Zero, but don’t want to mention it in case it screws something up. He’d be perfect for the part.

United State of Pop

I caught this on Trace TV this weekend and was very impressed. I know there are tons of these done, but rarely are they so seamless and this is one of them. It was created by DJ Earworm and apparently he’s been doing them for a while now. But sit back, hit play and enjoy The United State of Pop.

And you can download the mp3 of this video if you like.
