The Witty Art Of Marc Johns

I just stumbled onto the drawings of Marc Johns, and had some great laughs. Perhaps it’s the mood I’m in but seeing a pair of green underpants with antlers attached to them just made me smile no end.

Johns thinks of some pretty absurd things and uses watercolours to create drawings that are simple and sparse, yet so very witty. We totally love his sense of humour, have a look at some of his illustrations after the jump.

Solve Our Crossword & Win Red Dead Redemption Goodies

NOTE: This competition has ended, sorry.

I’ve been quietly excited about Rockstar Games’ upcoming title for short a while now but with every trailer, gameplay video, and featurette that has come along, the excitement has grown to a deafening crescendo. And in a mere seven days (four if you live in the U.S.), gamers around the world will be able to saddle up and travel back to the American frontier. It’s the early 1900s and a time of violent change, the death of the Wild West is at hand, and former outlaw John Marston is just trying to live a straight life. Violence touches Marston again and he is forced to hunt down his old companions to bury his past, one gunslinger at a time. That’s the gist of the epic western, Red Dead Redemption, which will be coming to all good gaming consoles (sorry Wii owners) on May 21st. In case you missed it, click here to see the launch trailer that aired yesterday.

To get you in the mood for Red Dead Redemption, our friends at Megarom and Look & Listen have put together a sweet hamper for us to give away to one lucky (and industrious) reader. Instead of the usual Flash game type of competition, we’ve gone back to a format from last year that proved both interesting and educational – a crossword puzzle! And to win the hamper, all you will need to do is solve our little puzzle. The Internet is your encyclopaedia so it should be fun, like shooting fish in a barrel. Find all the competition details after the jump.

You Won’t Believe It’s Etched Leather

Well I’ve gone and done it again, haven’t I? Spoiler alert: it is etched leather.

Artist Mark Evans liked to play with knives (I assume he can run with scissors if required). He uses a combination of scalpels and hunting knives to etch through the surface of his leather canvas to create some detailed pieces of art. See some of his work after the jump.

Julie Heffernan paints magical self-portraits

Today is one of those days when I’d rather be at home, shnuggled up with the dogs watching mindless sitcom reruns and drinking a steaming mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows, Jack Daniels and Prozac. Anyway I’m stuck at my desk and the next best thing is escaping into the internet, and today I found something truly beautiful – the paintings of American artist Julie Heffernan.

The paintings are as David Cohen, New York art critic aptly put, “a hybrid of genres and styles, mixing allegory, portraiture, history painting, and still life, while in title they are all presented as self portraits.” I think they’re what would have happened if Botticelli and Hieronymus Bosch had a baby, and magical realism and fairy tales had a baby, and those two babies had a baby, and that baby had a baby with LSD, and THAT baby could paint.

I can lose myself in Julie Heffernan’s paintings – they make me feel better.

Darth Vader Invades Your GPS

A friend once told me that a dead flea had a better sense of direction than I did, so I had to kill him … in my mind. He’s not half wrong, my path-finding skills are minimal at best and I should really invest in a GPS. I’ve seen a Garmin ad on the television – the one with a salmon using its natural abilities to overcome obstacles and safely arrive at its intended destination. It’s lucky that ad stopped where it did, for salmon have a nasty habit of dropping dead shortly after spawning.

And then there’s Dutch GPS manufacturer, TomTom, who have reached out to the galaxies and obtained the services of a certain dark lord of the sith to provide voice directions while you drive to your destination.  A big bag of WIN right there. Watch the outtakes as Lord Vader records his GPS voice for TomTom. He compels you to turn to the dark side.

Roundabounds, lol. You can buy Vader’s voice at the TomTom official website for USD 12.00.

BONUS: If you liked this, you may enjoy Vader and the romantic subplot.

Play This: Canabalt Typing Tutor Edition

Canabalt has a simlpe concept that is really well executed. Some would call it pure genius. We’ve covered it before and even used it as part of a competition not so long ago.

Its creator, indie game developer Atomic Adam, has just recently created a new mode for the game that not only test of your reflexes, but you typing prowess as well. It’s aimed at teaching you to type, but don’t let that guise of “education” fool you, it’s really the expert mode.

Play Canabalt Typing Tutor Edition and let us know how you fared.

Fox vs Rooster

A fox and a rooster come upon a field full of champagne bottles and start goofing around. It’s all fun and games until someone loses and eye or gets popped on the testicles.

Creative Opening Credits for LOST

The creation of messieurs Lindelof, Abrams, and Lieber will soon come to its end. Lost will conclude in its sixth season this year, with the 121st episode being aired on May 23rd. Some couldn’t careless whilst others will be mourning it like the death of a dear friend. Some of our readers gave their opinions in the Long Lost Tarots Cards post. However you feel about the show, it has become very much a part of popular culture, with a veritable army of devoted fans.

Aside from its title screen, Lost doesn’t feature any opening credits and it is these fans who pay tribute to their favourite show by creating alternate opening credit sequences. Have a look at some of their interpretations after the jump, beware they may contain spoilers.

Whether it be Julius Malema versus common sense or the South African cricket team fighting a losing battle or even the ageless pirates versus ninjas argument (incidentally see here for a collection of ninjas), there have always been epic rivalries. “The struggle is forever. It makes the world turn around.” says awesome illustrator Scott Campbell, whose Tumblr blog is a chronicle of the great confrontations in film history. Paul Dateh’s Super Cool Violin Mashup

We were amazed by Pomplamoose and their great cover of Michael Jackson’s Beat It. There are links to more of their track in the comments of that post. If you liked that, then you may love Asian musician Paul Dateh and his awesome violin skills.

Dateh has taken a couple of songs from the recent iTunes Top 40 list, mashed them together, and played them back on his trusty violin. Check it out below.

The tracks covered in this mashup were:

  • Lady Gaga – Telephone
  • Ke$ha – Blah Blah Blah
  • Rihanna – Rude Boy
  • Usher – OMG

If you like the song, click here to download it for free.

Back in 2007, Dateh played a selection of hip hop songs whilst DJ inka one spun the turntables in the background. See that after the jump.
