The Most Homicidal Countries

In South Africa, we have a lot of things to be proud about. On the sporting front, our rugby team is top of the IRB World Rankings and the Proteas are ranked the third best cricketing team in the world. I have conveniently left out the national soccer side but I’m sure they hold a record for something – perhaps having the most coaches hired/fired.

We have some of the most “entertaining” politicians (see Julius Malema), and whilst no list will ever be able to graph it, our love for braai and beer is unparalleled. We also have the dubious distinction of topping a list that most countries would try to avoid being a part of.

In a local-is-not-so-lekker situation which most of us are aware of (but don’t tend to bring up in normal conversation), South Africa leads the world in homicide rates. The Guardian reports that, according to United Nations data from 2004, South Africa has 69 murders per 100,000 people, with Colombia in second place with 61.1 and El Salvador taking third with 57.5. That UN data was visualized by GOOD magazine’s “Transparency” department into an infographic that I am hard-pressed to find visually appealing.

These kind of traits obviously shape peoples’ perceptions of countries, but for the most of it, South Africans really are a nice bunch of people. If you ever visit Cape Town, drop us a line and we’ll happily let you buy us beer ;-)

Masking Tape Graffiti by Buff Diss

Buff Diss is a talented Australian street artist with an interesting, non-traditional style. Instead of spray cans, Diss does tape. Using mainly masking tape, Diss creates his pieces free-hand on the streets of Melbourne (and other Australia cities), and the decay of the tape wearing away over time is part of the appeal of the piece.

Plastiquarium: Colourful Plastic Fish Art by David Edgar

I’m a terrible fisherman, I have no great stories of the fish I’ve caught or the ones that got away. My only triumph of mediocrity is when I foul-hooked a very small Large Mouth Bass. And that my friends is a preamble to this – the Plastiquarium.

Using discarded plastic containers, sculptor Edgar creates a colourful menagerie of fish and other sea creatures. Given the amount of rubbish polluting the oceans (see Great Pacific Garbage Patch), Edgar believes the Plastiquarium to be an evolutionary step.

The Plastiquarium is immersed in mystery. Modern myth suggests that a century of increasing phosphate levels in Earth’s marine environment caused new, synthetic life forms to emerge. As recyclable HDPE plastic containers spread concentrates of consumer product pollutants, the Plastiquarium creatures evolved in the image of their packaging forbearers.

365 Days of Stormtrooper Photos

When stormtroopers aren’t spending time fighting in battles, and not finding the droids they are looking for (even with the help of Google), what do you think they do with their free time?

Star Wars fan and photographer Stéfan Le Dû seeks to answer that question by giving this toys a life of their own and photographing them daily for a whole year. Started on April 3rd 2009, Stéfan’s Stormtroopers 365 project currently contains 285 photos of the troopers generally monkeying about. Have a look at some of the humorous shots after the jump.

The Funniest “One Letter Off” Movies

Ok, perhaps I should give you the full title, “Our list of the 20 funniest #oneletteroffmovies that I put together in 10 minutes without searching Twitter too thoroughly because my eyes are sore and preserving them is quite frankly more important than compiling a silly list”. Anyhoo…

The photoshop gurus at Worth1000 have been doing One Letter Off contests for quite a while now and this past weekend, it seems the meme made it to and had overtaken Twitter. The idea behind #oneletteroffmovies is to re-imagine popular flicks by changing, adding, or removing a letter in their titles, for example Jurassic Park becomes Jurassic Pork (which I am informed is a juicy adult entertainment film). Anyhoo…

Find our list of funniest, possibly vulgar #oneletteroffmovies after the jump.

You Won’t Believe It’s Light Refractions

No CG shenanigans here. Research scientist and microscopist Alan Jaras creates the most beautifully vibrant images by sending beam of lights through a variety of transparent, textured materials and then photographing the refractions.

Here are the technical details from the man himself:

These are light refraction patterns or ‘caustics’ formed by a white light beam passing through shaped and textured transparent forms. The pattern is captured directly on to 35mm film by removing the camera lens and putting the transparent object(s) in its place. Colours are introduced by placing complex coloured optical filters directly in the light beam.

The processed film is digitally scanned for uploading. Please note these are not computer generated images but a true analogue of the way light is refracted by the objects I create.

Say what? The results speak themselves and you can find them after the jump.

Nonsensical Infographics

Just the other day, I compiled a small list of infographics that I thought were pretty interesting. They seem to all the rage at the moment and in his “Nonsensical infographics” series, artist Chad Hagen has created a series of complicated graphs that chart nothing in particular but still look absolutely beautiful. Have a look at them after the jump.
