Sidewalk Interview Gone Bad. Real BAD.

A reporter is on the streets interviewing people about bilingualism in Canada when he encounters a stoned pedestrian and things get out of hand. It is definitely NSFW.

Workplace Misery at Chinese Keyboard Factory

Sometimes I take things for granted and bitch about how bad it is at work when someone’s finished off my favourite Dark French roast; I especially hate it when we run of the 3-ply toilet paper in the bogs.

The Meitai keyboard factory in Dongguan City makes keyboards for companies like Lenovo, Microsoft, and HP, and its workers know all to well about bad working conditions. Underpaid, and overworked, they are subjected to unsafe working conditions and denied medical assistance when they’re injured. They are also required to “love the company like their home.” I suspect if anyone were to speak up against the tyranny management, they would get marched off to the next building where the company tests their experimental Meat-Mincer 6000.

Herewith an except from the Meitai factory’s Factory Regulations and Discipline, Chapter VII:

  • Employees should actively monitor each other.
  • Infractions punished with the loss of over two hours’ wages (approximately USD 1.44):
    • Being 1 to 5 minutes late to start a shift…
    • Wearing work shoes outside the work room after work.
    • Putting hands in pant pockets while inside the factory or workroom.
  • Infractions punished with the loss of 4 ½ hours wages (approximately USD 2.88):
    • …answering a personal telephone call in the workroom.
    • Putting personal objects on the work desk.
    • Not diligently working or raising ones head to look around when guests or cadres come to visit.
  • Infractions punished with the loss of nearly seven hours’ wages (approximately USD $4.32):
    • Switching beds without authorization.
    • Riding the elevator without permission.
    • Chatting at the workstation during work hours…
  • Infractions punished with firing:
    • Not following the procedures spelled out by government regulations on stopping work, slowing work down, encouraging others to stop or slow down work.
    • Missing three days of work.
    • Disobeying China’s one-child policy.

To Inifinity: Space Colony Art from the 1970s

A couple of space colony summer studies were conducted at the NASA Ames Research Center in the 1970s, and the above images is part of the artistic renderings that came out of it. The colonies would house about 10,000 people. It looked very Utopian – until the soccer hooligans invaded.

I incinerated your $731 million hotel – oops my bad

Beijing mandarin fire 1

I can’t even begin to imagine spending 731 million not-Zim dollars on something, nevermind watching the whole lot go up in smoke. Needless to say I would be more than a little upset if this had been my very nearly completed luxury hotel, and all I got for it was “sorry”. Sorry doesn’t fit in my pocket arseholes!

Apparently according to the Daily Mail, what happened to cause this towering inferno (punalicious 10 points for moi!) was that some illegal/unauthorised Lunar New Year celebratory fireworks set off by a Chinese television station in Beijing, sent showers of sparks in the Mandarin Oriental’s general direction, at which point the whole place went up in flames. Nice.

The shooting flames sent off huge plumes of black smoke and showered the ground with embers. A fireman died after inhaling toxic gases when fighting the fire, Xinhua news agency said. Seven people were injured, including six firefighters.

Crews had largely extinguished the larger flames about three hours after the fire began, although hotspots continued to flicker.

And things looked even more depressing in the harsh light of day.

Any ideas what the moral of this story might be? Go on don’t bashful – leave a comment.

Bar Refaeli Makes Cover for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition

Quite frankly the only time Sports Illustrated gets my attention is when the Swimsuit Edition comes out. And the prestigious 2009 cover went to 23-year old Israeli model Bar Refaeli. This time I might actually buy the magazine instead of sneaking off to the cleaning aisle at the Supermarket to sweatily paw through it. The missus gets terribly embarrassed and tells passers-by that I’m special.

For those remotely interested in fashion, Refaeli’ wears a string bikini by Missoni, the photo is modern, her hair and swimsuit look natural. You see her freckles. And so does Leonardo DiCaprio who happens to be her boyfriend. She’s been in the S.I.’s swimsuit edition three times already, but this is her first time on the cover. Blah blah blah. I know what you want, hit the jump already!

The Greatest Valentine’s Day Diseases

“You really shouldn’t have. No really, you shouldn’t have.”

Here is five gifts you really shouldn’t give or receive this Valentine’s Day (or any day really). There are no pictures to complement this post – there’s no way I’m searching Google Images for genital warts

1. Gonorrhoea

Also known as the clap, from the French word “clapier” meaning “brothel.” The bacterium Neisseria Gonorrhea infects the male urethra and the female cervix, but can also exist in moist places like the back of the throat, the rectum, and the eyes. The symptoms include burning on urination, frequent urination, yellowish vaginal discharge, redness of the genitals, swelling of the genitals, and a burning or itching of the vaginal area.

2. Syphilis

The Treponema Pallidum is a microscopic worm-like, spiral-shaped organism that burrows into the moist mucous membranes of the mouth or genitals. There are three stages of Syphilis which causes anything from ulcers to hair loss, fever, skin rashes, lesions, and possibly damage of the internal organs and the brain. Incidentally Syphilis is also called the French Disease.

4. Chlamydia

Similar to Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia is found in the cervix and urethra and can also live in the throat or rectum. It is highly destructive to the fallopian tubes and can cause infertility and tubal pregnancies. In men it can cause inflammation of the urethra and rectum. Chlamydia often goes undetected.

5. Pubic Lice

Also known as crabs, these parasitic insects are found in the genital area on pubic hair, and can be spread through sexual intercourse or contact with an infested person’s clothes or linen. It may occasionally be found on legs hairs, armpits, mustaches, beards, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Lice found on the head are not pubic lice; they are head lice.

6. Herpes

Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are members of the herpes virus family, Herpesviridae, which cause infections in humans. HSV-1 auses cold sores and fever blisters in the mouth and around it and HSV-2 causes sores in the genital area. The lesions will heal but the infection is persistent and symptoms may recur periodically.

7. HIV/AIDS

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus and has now spread to every country in the world. It is one of a group of viruses known as retroviruses. After getting into the body, the virus kills or damages cells of the body’s immune system and progressively destroys the body’s ability to fight infections and certain cancers. Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk.

$timator: Estimating Your Site’s Worth

Two-toed Tim at Stalking Venus is taller than me, has a bigger tummy than me, his goatee alone makes the ladies swoon. Just for once I would like to be on top (but not in that way, obviously).

When the lothario happened upon a gadget that uses some jiggery pokery to estimate the real dollar value of a website, I spotted my chance of victory. So I headed off to $TIMATOR and chucked in my site address and waited for it to be processed. Here are the  results in US dollars for the onelargeprawn blog:

Considering I started it in December ’08, I’m pleasantly happy with the results. I’ve be much happier if I were the two-headed hydra that is Larry Page and Sergey Brin:
