Death by Hart Attack

Freestyle motocross racer Jeremy Lusk, a gold medalist at the 2008 X Games, died on February 11th whilst attempting a backflip at a competition in Costa Rica. Lusk failed the Hart Attack backflip, and slammed headfirst into the dirt. He suffered head and spinal cord injuries, and was put into a medicine-induced coma. Lusk died with his parents and his wife, Lauren, at his side. He was 24.

See the crash below. It’s disturbing.

Lusk had crashed before whilst performing the same trick at the 2007 X games but walked away unhurt. That prompted calls for an end to a so-called “blood sport” that makes injury and death almost inevitable. In contrast others said Lusk, like other stunt riders knew the risks but did it anyway, and died doing what he loved. What’s your opinion? Let us know in the comments.

Photoburst: A Travel Photography Daily Contest

Photoburst is a travel photography daily contest, where everyday they publish the best photo that has been submitted. And every month, the author of the best photo of the day is awarded with a USD 100.00 gift card from B&H Photo Video (they ship internationally).

The above photo by Loic Brohard was the best photo for February 7th, 2009, and was shot in Dead Vlei, Sossusvlei, Namibia.

Dead Vlei is a clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. Dead Vlei is surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, some reaching up to 300 meters, which rest on a sandstone terrace. The clay pan was formed after rainfall, when the Tsauchab river flooded, creating temporary shallow pools where the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. When the climate changed, drought hit the area, and sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river from the area. The trees died, as there no longer was enough water to survive. The remaining skeletons of the trees (believed to be about 900 years old) are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. The wood does not decompose because it is so dry.

Hail to the Chief: 1963 Corvette is Fastest Car Ever!

Forget any of the those losers we mentioned in the top 10 most expensive rides in the world. Rod Saboury’s 1963 Corvette completely blows them off the track. His 2,400-horsepower, twin-turbo-charged Corvette goes from zero to 60 mph in just one second!

Saboury’s Corvette was clocked doing 210.54 mph at a track in Ohio, where he reached the quarter-mile mark in a staggering 6.95 seconds. His car is officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the fastest street-legal car on the planet. The Shelby Super Cars Ultimate Aero, which used to hold the as the fastest production car, can travel a quarter-mile in just under 10 seconds. That shows the impressiveness of Saboury’s four-speed-transmission car which runs on normal pump gas and street tyres. It even has cup holders and electric windows.

58-year old Saboury is a full-time roofing contractor who has been designing and racing cars as a hobby for the past 40 years. Here’s a clip of him talking about his creation:

Tod’s Omotesando Building

Fronting Omotesando, Tokyo’s famous tree-lined boulevard is the slender, L-shaped building for the Italian footwear retailer, Tods. Created by innovative architect Toyo Ito, the seven-story building contains a glass curtain wall block with concrete and steel supporting members, which crisscross and fork out to mimic the shapes of the tall elm trees that stretch along Omotesando Avenue. The branching structures don’t just form the building’s exterior, they run through the inside as well, serving as points of interest and section dividers.

Concept Steam Iron: Now With LED Lights!

I love ironing! There I said it. Nothing pleases me more than to put on a freshly ironed shirt in the morning. I do all my own ironing, and it’s usually a steamingly good job if I do say so myself.

And this steam iron concept by Tatasuya Kobayashi has got me hot under the collar (Geez, I’ve got to iron out these bad puns). It features a cool LED system that lights up according to the iron’s temperature. It also comes with a soft silicone lining to prevent accidental burns, which is a common injury plaguing the amateur ironing league at the moment.

It’s not revolutionary design (read: it won’t iron the clothes for you) but it’s certainly nice to look at – I’d go for as as to say it’s the Bar Refaeli of steam iron concepts.

Sleek Corvette Stingray to Debut in New Transformers Movie

With the new Transformers movie due out soon (click HERE to see the trailer if you missed it), we see a newcomer to the franchise in the form of a stylish Corvette Stingray concept vehicle. It’ll be playing the part of transforming Autobot Sideswipe. It’s not the Megan Fox of motor vehicles, but is tasty nonetheless ;)
